DAY 5: Early and Frakked
Who: Samuel T. Anders and OTA
What: Arrival
When: Day 5, pre-dawn
Where: Forest, to start
Rating: TBA
Status: Active

There was a musky smell in the air laced with a bit of something rotten as Samuel T. Anders was begrudgingly dragged from his sleep. Not a moment before, he had laid down in his rack on Galactica. There was distinctly more moisture in the air and the stench that was dissipating as he woke was reminiscent of the waste disposal ship he had just spent the past few weeks on. Also, it was significantly cooler, like being in a fridge kind of cooler. Most alarmingly of all, the familiar hum of the ship, any ship, was absent.

The scenery was alien to him as his eyes snapped open in alarm. There was no sign of his bunk or even another person. Instead, a murky forest stretched out in the dark. From nowhere an alarm began to sound obnoxiously. It sounded like a game buzzer or a warning siren. This whole thing looked like a bad nightmare, but felt all to real for Anders to let himself be consoled by that. Everything felt wrong.

He sat up to survey the surrounding wood, brushing off the leaves that stuck to his bare chest and face. It was freezing. That alarm seemed to be coming from everywhere. Without warning, it stopped and the world plunged back into silence. "Hello?" he called out, hoping there was someone, anyone nearby.

Ideas of who could be doing this raced through his mind. If it were the Cylons, somehow, he found solace in the fact that he could tell them the truth about himself. If it were the humans, and they somehow found out what he was, he would only find solace in death.

Too morbid, he thought. It was too early for that kind of thinking.

From the shadows of the forest, a shape emerged. "Hey!" Sam got up, feeling colder and colder as he became more and more awake. The figure simply meandered closer. "Look, I think I'm a little turned around-" Sam stopped mid-sentence. Whomever or whatever was approaching him seemed to amble forward like some sort of prowling animal, not like a person or a centurion. "-could you, uh..." A low, animal-like sound came from its direction.

Though he wasn't all the way awake just yet, he knew a bad situation when he saw one. He started to make out the shape of deep set eyes and a wide, low mouth. It may have looked human, from a distance, but whatever it was, it wasn't like any human he'd ever seen. Panic rose as he realized all of this.

Suddenly, the creature flicked its head to the side and made a raspy growling sound and all of Anders' worst suspicions were proven true.

"Frak." Then he was off and running.

Martha jerked awake, the sound of an alarm blaring, her first thought was that she fell asleep at UNIT again. She groaned, and clamped her hands over her ears, forcing her eyes to open a little wider. Martha, licked her lips, and dropped one hand to reach for her cell phone, which wasn’t in her pocket. She frowned and patted herself down. Nothing. That was worry-some, she never went anywhere with out her cell, or her keys. She was in the woods, of an unknown forest, with no idea how she got here.

All of this seemed strangely familiar, but she couldn’t place how. Moving to stand, a sharp pain shot up through her ankle. Sinking back down onto the ground she reached down and rolled up her pant leg, wondering why they were so long. Normally her jeans fit her just right.

“What the” She gingerly touched around the edge, looking for a break in the bone, frowning deeply at her leg. How had she sprained her ankle with no memory of it? Fear pumped through her, she rolled over onto one side, and using the nearest tree started to pull herself up. She froze, when she heard something. It sounded human, which was good. But friend or foe?

Looking at the ground, she scanned the area closest to her for a weapon, luckily there was a tree branch, it wasn’t terribly long, and when she picked it up it creaked. It would break easy too, oh well at least it should shock the attacker, or prove as a distraction. Gripping it tightly, she peeked around the corner, trying to spot what made the noise.

Her head was pounding as the last of the alarms rang only in her ears. She blinked again, and forced her eyes open wider, trying to pull her wits about her. It felt like she was waking up after a really long sleep. And who knows, maybe she was. She heard another sound, and this time most defiantly human.

"Hello?" She called out.

As he frantically ran through this bizarre forest wearing nothing but his green uniform pants and his boxers under them, he heard a voice call out. Human, or at least human-sounding which was good enough for him. At this point he wasn't even sure if that thing was still chasing him. All of this felt like a nightmare still, and in nightmares, you just run.

"Hello?" Eager to find another person, or at least something that didn't look so horrific as that thing did, he followed the voice. The thought that this could all be a hostile situation never completely left his mind.

Gripping her poor broken branch a little tighter, she waited until she heard the voice answer back. Male, it was deeper then hers. She turned her face to the voice. Oh well, if it was bad, she'd have to think of something else.

"My name is Martha Jones..." She called out, maybe it was some one else from UNIT. She edged away from her tree, putting a little more weight on her ankle. At least it could hold her up, she wasn't moving very fast, but if this person didn't mean harm. That shouldn't be an issue.

"Over here." She heard another noise, the sound of grass and twigs being broken, and turned. It was a man, Martha didn't let go of her stick yet though.

Panting and becoming aware of the numbness of his feet, Sam lumbered towards her, trying to keep an eye both over his shoulder for the damn thing that was chasing him and this Martha person. She at least didn't sound like a Cylon. "I'm Anders." Finally he caught a glimpse of her. She was timid looking with that stick, but fully clothed, unlike himself.

Watching him approch squinted. From what she could tell, he wasn't wearing any shoes, had on sleep like pants, and had probably just rolled out of bed. For now, Martha was going to have to assume he was a civilian, and a friend. She let her stick drop slightly.

"Anders, glad to meet you." She said, tilting her head slightly to look at him. His height would be useful in a fight-if he knew how to use it. She peered around him, but didn't see anything.

Her brain started pounding against her skull, she closed her eyes and willed it away. Something about all this, the running the fear, the fog-it was utterly fimilar. Like she'd done it before.

"I don't suppose you know where we are do you Anders?" She asked, looking around. Something was tugging at her gut, she frowned and looked around again. "I, I think there's more people here." She frowned. "But I can't be sure."

Open-mouth panting, he shook his head. "No idea. I take it you don't either." Finally, he was within normal speaking distance. "What the frak's going on?"

Again he glimpsed over his shoulder. There was nothing he could see besides tress, fog, and a blue haze of very early morning.

Shaking her head no, Martha continued to look around puzzled. For some reason, she kept expecting to see a sparkle of gold light. She blinked her eyes again, clearing away the sand.

"I'm not sure..." Taking a limp forward, she pointed. "I have no idea why, but- I really think we should head this way. It's like...I feel like I've been here before. Like when you think of a word, and it's on the tip of your tongue and you can't get it out?" She nodded to herself. It was too dark to see if there was a trail but; "It can't hurt to keep moving right?"

"So, your from America then Anders?" Martha asked.

It was nearly comforting to hear that she might vaguely know where they are. He nodded in agreement. At least if they kept moving, that thing would be further behind them.

Martha looked normal enough. He'd never seen anyone who looked like her before, so that boded well for her being human and not Cylon, but then again, he'd never seen any strange twins of himself. She also sounded like a Caprican, which was a comfort, so when she asked about America, he was caught off guard. He shook his head. "Where's that?"

His lack of clothing was starting to become a bit more troublesome as he felt the windchill hit him. It was like being outside at night on New Caprica.

Martha turned her head to look at him, where was America? She bit her lip, maybe he wasn't from around here.

"It's on Earth, you ever been there? Where are you from?" She asked, offering a small smile to show she was sincere in her question, hopefully he didn't think she was bonkers. She shivered as the wind blew, and while she would offer him her coat, it wouldn't fit him so she didn't offer.

"Here, will you help me walk?" She held out an arm. She didn't actually need help, she didn't think, but body warmth was a plus on a cold morning like this. And the help couldn't hurt her ankle.

"Earth?" Immediately a million ideas passed through his mind about this having something to do with being one of the Final Five or about finding Earth or prophesy. If he was on Earth, then perhaps this was what Kara meant about the Final Five having been to Earth. Maybe this was the beginning of all this destiny crap Leoban always talked about.

She paused his frantic thoughts to help her. "Oh, sure, yeah." His whole body was freezing and even a little contact would help. As he reached out to help her, he realized his hand was shaking and that he couldn't feel his fingertips.

"You know about Earth?" He continued.

Watching thoughts that she couldn't even guess at, flicker across his face, Martha frowned. Maybe she made a mistake mentioning Earth; while she couldn't guess his thoughts from the look of it they weren't all that pleasant. And then he reached out for her and she curled against his side.

"...ridiculously tall you are." She muttered, coming up to only to the middle of his chest. She put his arm on her shoulder, and put a little weight on him, moving them both forward.

"Yeah, I live here." She looked up at him. "Your not...like at war or something with us are you? Because that'd be bad."

"What about you? Where are you from? What planet?"

Everything about this moment reminded him of the resistance on Caprica. Trudging through the forest, being somewhere strange, and helping strange people that could be the enemy. "The opposite, actually. I've been- we've been looking for Earth. The fleet, I mean."

If she didn't know about that, then she clearly had been living under a rock, in a very high up place, or on Earth itself.

Now even his dog tags felt cold. He never thought about necklaces feeling cold while you wear them.

"I'm from Picon, originally. But, uh, Caprica for the most part." The chill was far more intense than he was prepared to deal with having just gone to bed. It was getting harder and harder to walk as his feet numbly hit the ground.

"Well, that's good at least." Martha finally let the stick drop as they walked. If he proved to be a danger she'd just have to improvise. Another wave of dizzy hit her, she stumbled slightly-grateful she'd asked Anders for his help, since it meant she didn't face-plant into the ground.

The fog was laying over where they were walking and the sun still hadn't peeked more then a couple of times, from it's hiding spot. Picon, Caprica? Martha hadn't heard of either of those places maybe the Doctor would...the Doctor. Was he here? Something flashed in her minds eyes but was gone as quickly as it came.

"Anders, this may be a strange question but...what year is it?" She asked, it was possible he was from the future, Jack was after all.

"Lean on me a bit like a crutch if you need to, we can share the weight." Martha instructed in what her sister called her 'Doctor' tone, the one that brooked no argument. "I think we're getting closer, does that look like a clearing, or a road to you?" Martha asked pointing ahead.

"Easy," he uttered as he helped her stay upright.

The proximity of their bodies was at least warming him up a little on the one side. Better than nothing.

Her question, though strange, didn't seem all that amiss. It actually got him thinking. "You know, I'm not entirely sure anymore. We've been traveling for so long, I sorta lost track." As he thought back, he stopped looking at the date back on Caprica. It was just the number of days after the fall, and even that he lost track on.

Just as she instructed, he did use her to balance himself. His feet were starting to cause his legs to ache. He glanced down and his big toe was bleeding from where he must have kicked something. He couldn't feel a thing.

"Thanks" Martha said, reaching up with one hand. "It's just this head-ache. It's clearing up, but it'll hit me really strong." Offering him another smile.

"Are you a time traveler?" Martha asked, craning her neck to look up at him. It'd be just to weird if her were. "Losing track of time happens..."

She glanced down at the same time he did. "Here, here stop." She patted his arm, and looked around, pushing him towards a large fallen log. "We should bandage your feet. You don't have a pocket knife on you do you?" Martha asked, motioning him to sit on the log.

Now her questions were getting crazier. "No, not a time traveler."

As he plopped down on the log, par her instructions. Anders patted down his pockets, only to find them empty, until he got to the cargo pocket on his right leg and felt a strange lump. Quickly, he opened up the flap and pulled out a small kit that he had no memory of ever seeing, let alone putting there. "Uh..." He dug through it quickly. "Nope. Its okay, really," he said, closing up the strange kit. The sense of something following them would not leave him. "I can't even feel it. We should keep moving."

From the look Anders was giving her, apparently time travelers weren't the norm. where he was from. She shrugged.

While he was busy patting himself down Martha, was busy trying to figure out how to rip her shirt up so that he'd have some coverings over his feet.
"Let me see that please" Martha held her hands out for the box. She'd felt a jolt of realization when she saw it. When he finally handed it over, Martha dug through the contender and pulled out what she knew was going to be there. A pair of tub socks.

"At least put these on, it might help you stay warm, but more importantly it'll keep mud out of the cut. You not feeling your feet isn't a good thing. We need to get you back to...somewhere." She trailed off, and shook her head.

Waiting for him to put the socks on she held out a hand to help him up.

Those socks, which had looked like a rag towel to him originally, were one of the greatest things he could have seen in that moment, second only to shoes or maybe a jacket. "How'd you know those would be there?" he asked as he got up.

"You weren't kidding when you said you knew this place." She was starting to sound like Kara.

The socks at least make his calves feel warm.

As he got up, Sam realized that the world was getting lighter, The sun really was rising. Maybe soon they'd get a better idea of where they were.

"I...I didn't." Martha frowned and shook her head. "Honestly I'm not sure." She sighed. "I just...remembered seeing it." Shrugging again, she wrapped her arm around his waist again. And headed back in the direction her gut was telling her to go.

"Yeah. Well, this isn't where I'm from if that's what you're wondering." Martha clarified quickly.

With the added sunlight filtering through the trees, Martha made out that there defiantly *Was* a path up a bit further. "Well, there's a road. So I guess that's a good thing."

The shaking was getting worse. Now he was flashing back to his fight with pneumonia on New Caprica that seemed to last for ages. Just fight through it, he pressed himself. "Wherever we're going, you think there might be a jacket or something?"

He could make out the path ahead, too. This was promising as paths and roads usually meant people, or at least where people were. On Caprica, it could have also meant where Cylons had been patrolling.

Martha used her arm that was wrapped about his torso, to start rubbing up and down briskly, when she felt him start to shiver. "Yes...there's...I." Pausing she tried to recall what she 'remembered' of the place they were headed. Everything floated through her mind, like clouds-hard to grasp.

"There's buildings, and...at least one place where I know you can get something. It's relatively safe there too-if I remember correctly." As the road got closer, Martha felt like there was something important, she should be letting some one know where she was-they were-but with out a cell phone how was that possible.

"Once the sun gets up a little more, it should warm up. I wish I could offer you something." Martha hated not being able to help.

"So, where, uh," he laughed, "or 'when' are you from, Martha?" Everything he had said seemed so odd to her, he wondered how different hers would be.

"That'll teach you to sleep half-naked." Martha teased, as they walked.

"Uh, I'm from Earth, year 2009..I think that's when I left it anyway." She smiled, but didn't bother to try and look up at him. Finally they hit the gravel dirt of the road.

"Well..." she hesitated, squinting up ahead to a fork in the road. "Does that look like a building to you?" She moved towards it. "Because it looks like one to me." She sighed in relief, she'd honestly been half afraid she was going crazy.

"Earth. So its all real then? Earth, the thirteenth colony and everything?"

Squinting much like she had, he nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that's a building alright."

He could feel the hope rising in him that it would be warmer inside. He had that strange knot in his stomach from too much tension in his muscles. He'd survived nuclear fallout for months, freezing weather on New Caprica, and deep space for months, but this was up there in extreme conditions. As they got closer, Same looked over the structure. It reminded him of one of the old temples.

"Uh, I'm not sure about the thirteenth colony, but yeah. Earth is real and I'm pretty sure we're standing on it." She shoook her head, the Doctor was going to get a trip out of this guy when he met him. The Doctor-that...that thought replayed in her head. That must mean he was here!

As they got closer it was a church. Martha glared at it for a minute. "I think...I think I know some one, or knew...hrm." She stopped talking. "I'm going to guess that there's some one in the church." She wasn't really guessing from her brain, she saw a line of grey smoke rasing up and mingling with the clouds.

The smoke had caught Sam's eye, too, but he was thinking less about the people and more about the warmth. All her second guessing was frustrating because it would be useful to have someone who knew the landscape around here, but at the same time, every time she did it, he could tell she was getting closer to the memories she was looking for. Andy's stomach had finally settled just before he'd gone to bed, but when the alarm jerked him awake - awakening along with him, a killer headache that felt similar to a hangover but slightly different and twice as painful - his stomach had started in again. He was hungry and he was hurting. Andy knew he needed to eat something, but the pain-induced nausea made the idea of food far less appealing and, so, the vicious cycle continued.

It was much colder when he woke up then it had been when he'd gone to sleep, but Luna was much smaller than he was and he'd decided that she needed the alter cloth as a second blanket more than he needed it for a first. Besides, there was the heat of the fire, however little it was from where he was positioned, to keep him warm for the time being. When the sun came all the way up, he hoped it would be warmer. Thus, he'd moved himself - carefully - up onto one of the pews, laying down on it and staring up at the ceiling with frustration, because every time he tried to go back to sleep that goddamn alarm went off again.

So, to say that he was a little out of it, cranky, and tired when he heard the church doors open unexpectedly and both a male and a female voice called out, would've been fairly accurate. He was too tired, too, to bother concentrating his energy into working the mojo on whoever they were to keep them at bay until he could find a weapon. Hopefully, if they were threats, they'd be put off by attacking a small, attractive blonde and an effective cripple. Besides, if they were calling out, maybe they were new people just looking for a place to crash the way he and Luna had four days prior.

With a grunt and much effort, Andy pushed himself into a sitting position and looked back at the door. "Yeah, hello?" Andy called back. "Who're you?"

He spared a cautious glance at Luna and gestured for her to stay low where she wouldn't be seen right away, just in case, as he reached for one of the crutches and readied himself to use it as a weapon if need be. If he needed to move to defend her, he would; if it meant tearing out the stitches, he hoped Lexie would understand and repeat the process to fix it again. Mostly, though, he hoped it wouldn't come to that.

Something was odd about that morning. Then again, something was odd about each morning in this place. A rather annoying alarm went off to wake her, and would not let her go back to sleep. With a shrug she had sat up where she had lain, far from Andy that last night, before getting up to get her bottle of water and one of those 'protein bars' that she had gotten the day before.

After everything the day before, it had only been the fire that had kept her from sleeping in the room on the far side of the church. It was nothing against Andy personally, but it had even taken her quite a long time to fall asleep. Even then it had been a fitful sleep full of dreams she had not wanted, and had caused her to wake several times through the night.

Actually, the alarm was doing her some good in not allowing her to fall asleep again. She did not want those dreams.

It took a second after the voices before Luna recognized the woman's voice. Completely missing Andy's gesture, she looked up over the pew beside her. Fingers curling over the edge of the seat as she peeked over it, Luna called back, "Healer Martha?"

Martha leaned forwords slightly to try and hear better. She heard movement from inside the church before some one finally called out their question. Male, and slightly fimilar.

Before she could open her mouth to identify herself, she heard another voice, female this time, asking after her. Martha gave a tiny sigh of relief, at least these people knew her. Or at least the woman did. Normally she wasn't called a healer, but it was close enough to the truth, that it allowed her to relax.

"Uh, yeah-Yes I suppose so." She nudged Anders a little with her arm, indicating they should start up the stairs. "Um, if you know me, that's well, that's great, mind if we take shelter here with you?" She asked, trying to peer into the building and see hwo was there.

Anxious to get inside, Anders made his way up the stairs as fast as possible. The pre-dawn air was far too cold for his bare skin, and his shaking was starting to worry him. Sam had not forgotten the months he was sick from pneumonia. The thought had him swallowing down a cough.

"Recognize any of them?" Anders inquired hopefully. The sooner Martha's memory was straightened out, the better.

Andy spared a small sigh of exasperation when Luna failed to follow his direction and stay down. Instead, she popped up, peeking over the pew and calling out for Martha. Andy furrowed his brow a little, racking his brain for the sound of Martha's voice and when she spoke again through the door, he still couldn't tell for sure, because the sound was muffled and his head was pounding. "Yeah come in," he called back, shifting himself again as much as he could without moving his leg.

The door started to open and Andy sat up straighter, tensing with anxious worry. But then a tall man in no shirt - oh man, what the fuck, dude? Even I know it's too damn cold for that! - walked in and, Luna was right. Martha was behind him.

"Martha! Jesus, everybody's been freaking out; where were you?!" he gasped, now positively itching to jump up and hurry over there to hug her. Just knowing she wasn't the body in the woods made him feel a million times better.
