Day Five - Mid Morning

Who: Kaylee Frye, Wolverine and OTA
What: Scavenging
When: Day Five, early morning
Where: The Carnival
Rating: TBA
Status: Completed

Having woken up entirely alone, and without any knowledge of River's whereabouts, Kaylee thought she could at least head to the Carnival. After all, River knew she would go there, didn't she? If her friend had left of her own volition, she would come and Kaylee would be able to feel relieved and scold her for running off. If she had not gone on her own...well, she refused to think about that. River would find her, and then everything would be shiny while they waited for the Cap'n and the others to come and find them.

Besides, having her hands busy would do her some good.

The moment she had stepped foot within range, the young woman had found herself climbing under one of the machines and searching for parts that might help her in her newest jury-rigged device. Not a way to make wine over the engine, not this time. But something simpler, and hopefully a bit easier, heating water. Just without fuel or even outmoded electrical conduits. How she would feed energy into the device still had to be figured out, but she would. She always did.

Bits of grass were getting into her mussed brown curls and she clipped the side of her hand against a piece of machinery. "Ouch," Kaylee grumbled, not halting in her trying to remove the piece she was intent on collecting.

Logan damn near burst something trying not to laugh as Kaylee all but swooned. He did grin at her, a knowing, just shy of lecherous grin.

"What sort of belts you need, Doc? There's a coupla sizes under here." And a couple of different breeds of belt, too ... mechanical and 'hold up your pants'.

He was betting Kaylee was more interested in one than the other.

Ooh, very nice smile. Kaylee did moon a little over some male attention, even if it was more teasing than getting anything done. A girl could forget was sex was even in concept after so long out in the Black with overprotective 'siblings' around. Her sex life had pretty much dried up to a trickle when she had come aboard Serenity, a sad fact given that she had joined the crew at seventeen.

Okay, so it did not even technically count as male attention because he had not actually done anything, but that just went to show how much like a sponge she was for the stuff. Even being down to one shirt and inches away was enough to have her mooning and sighing.

No matter how very, very sexy Logan was. What with the strong muscles and getting up close and not nearly personal enough. No matter how distracting he was, Kaylee remembered to ask an all important question.

She took the mechanical part out of Logan's much larger hands without asking, looking over at the Doctor working on the little yellow car. "Doctor? Have you seen a girl with long brown hair and combat boots? Her name's River and I don't know where she is."

"Timing belt, vee belt, and perhaps a standard flat belt would do fine," the stranger's insinuation was lost on the Doctor. Sure, he was full of future aphorism and innuendo; however, his mind rarely took the day trip into the land of sexual banter.

"River? I met her at the carnival," he started, turning catching his knuckles on an errant edge as he tried to undo a bolt with his bare hands. "She's missing?" He asked, his head jerking up quickly. Martha had gone missing, and Dean, and now River? Why? It's not like any of them had anything in common... Save him anyway.

"Have any need for some gaskets?" His face now planted right back into the guts of the bumper car.

Logan kept right on smirking, even as he checked the underside of the machine he and Kaylee were mostly under.

"Hmmmm ... think I see a timing belt down here." He said, and scooted closer to it.

Which, of course, required some maneuvering with Kaylee. "So what're you tryin' to build, Doc?" He wanted to know. Might be worth a laugh. Solar powered water heaters, indeed.

Disappointed, but never disheartened, Kaylee nodded. Returning to the task at hand, because obviously she could continue a conversation while collecting pieces that she needed. "Prolly jus' wanderin' around," she hoped aloud, her speech devolving a bit with such an infusion of optimism into it all at once.

Since she had slid back under the machine, Logan's 'scooting' had him moving further under the machine parts above. On her side, she was pretty much facing his belt in a position that was far less fun than it sounded. Mostly because of the fact that she barely knew the guy (okay, that had not stopped her in the long past) and just as much because he had strictly been hands off. And, she mostly stuck to waiting for the first move, no matter how many months and months and months it took sometimes.

"G-gaskets is nice." No mention hear of nearly 'blowing' one, because even in her time that meant something quite different when faced with a man's belt buckle.

"Sonic pulse generator with quadruple amplification and modulation control," he rambled, yanking a gasket off with little effort and setting it on the floor.

The Doctor hadn't known River long, but he was fairly certain she was the type to wander about. Though, how safe it could be to wander in times like these he couldn't help but wonder.

"Eck!" The Time Lord exclaimed, jumping back as a bit of oil from the dilapidated machine squirted out unexpectedly. The chucks, for the moment were safe.

Scrunching his brow and wiping his forehead with a quite dirty palm the Doctor realized how much his beloved trainers meant to him. "Never much thought of that before," he muttered quietly to himself.

Logan, in the middle of getting the belt free, stopped dead and started laughing his ASS off.

"WHAT?" He wanted to know, when he could finally talk through the laughter. "What the /fuck/. And I thought a solar powered water heater was reaching. Shit, doc ... whydoncha just build a shuttle for a moon launch? You've got as much chance of that working as you do that pulse generator thing."

He finally went back to pulling the belt free. "What the /hell/ do the two of you have against simple, basic shit that has a chance in hell of actually, you know, being useful? Where the hell are you going to get the /power/ to run that generator, doc, if you by some miracle manage to build it?" He scooted back out from under the machine, one arm brushing against Kaylee. Even mid-tirade against their apparent idiocy, he winked at her, then got to his feet and handed Doc the belt. "Git your damn head out of the clouds and into the practicalities. This is /survival/. Worry about that first, and the fripperies later."

The Doctor's volunteered building project perked up Kaylee's interest. "That sounds awful complicated, d'you need any help with it?" She could help, although her current priority was the water heater. If only because it would make life easier on a short term scale.

Logan's cynicism and laughter simply washed off of the cheerful mechanic, who was more excited at the prospect of a complicated project. Even if she couldn't be involved, she could at least watch and possibly learn a thing or two.

"Solar powered water heaters are simple," she reminded him. Trying to focus on anything but the fact that his arm brushing against her side was enough to make her want far more brushing. "Built my first when I was only about knee high, with spare parts leftover from Daddy's shop."

If the Doctor was at all phased by the strange man's reaction to his plan, he didn't really show it. Currently elbow deep in go-cart bits, the Time Lord was currently fishing out the alternator and adjacent battery. Sure, the battery wouldn't have much juice to it - perhaps just a few residual sparks - but he didn't need an entire generator.

"Solar powered water heater?" The Doctor perked. He hadn't thought he'd have the necessary components for solar power - namely the correct ratios of carbon and silicon for the pannelling; but, the spunky blonde seemed fairly confident in her abilities.

"I'd quite appreciate a hand, actually," The Doctor replied, looking up with a rather cheshire grin as he pulled another belt from the banana-hued car.

"Do you have much experience with amplification improvisation? I thought I might be able to dash together a speaker from existing parts; but, I haven't been able to find anything just yet."

Elbow deep in the car's guts once more, "Well, look at that," he said, yanking out the grounding circuitry for the motor. "Think you have any use for this bit?"

"If you say so, doll." Logan said. "At any rate, I need to get a move on ... need to get a look at more of this place, find somewhere to set up shop myself, so I'll leave you two to your lunacy." He got to his feet, dusting his hands off, and retrieved his shirts and the 'survival kit'. "See you two around."

"Oh, okay," Kaylee did deflate somewhat as Logan took off. "I'll see you later!"

While she did watch him walk off, with a tilt of her head that tapered off with a soft sigh, she was up and over to the Doctor. "Hi, I'm Kaylee," a single strand of hair was brushed back, before she held out one hand. Grease already under the nailbeds of her fingers. "Shannon wrote about you."

"'m making a solar powered water heater, so we don't have ta keep freezin' ta pieces everytime we wanna get scrubbed clean." With both hands eventually on the side of the vehicle he sat in, she nodded. "Don't know everything about them, but I know enough ta help wherever ya need." He held out the circuitry and her eyes lit up as if he had given her a shipful of gold studded with diamonds. "Ooh, shiny."

The Doctor didn't have much of a reaction either as the strange man took off. He seemed either annoyed at being out of his depth, or annoyed that people might be working on things he didn't understand. Either way, the Doctor knew he didn't have time to try and reason with him. He was growing more tired and less focused with each quarter hour that passed by, so, he knew he had to make up his mind and soon.

"Nice meeting you, Kaylee," he stopped to wipe his hands on the back of his long coat with a smile. "She did?" He was sort of surprised Shannon would be writing about him - wasn't she busy with the census?

"That's thoughtful, though I'm hoping I can get this working so we won't have to take too many showers."

Watching her reaction to the circuitry, the Doctor became more and more convinced that she might actually be able to help him and not just putting on some sort of show. That was a fantastic thought to have - suddenly he didn't feel quite so alone in the realm of scientifically brilliant.

Fantastic.

"She did," Kaylee repeated back in the affirmative. "River talking 'bout ya too. Said you were buildin' something ta try ta get us all out of here." Probably was best not to mention ratings of attractiveness and the like, better for all that way. Surreptitiously, she double checked her pocket to see if her journal was safely put away.

"Course," she agreed. "But it's pro'lly better just in case. Won't take too long, maybe a day, maybe two to get it up and going." Better to have all bases covered, just in case. If there was one thing that she had learned from her time onboard Serenity, in experience with Mal's plans that never worked quite like they were supposed to, it was that you should always have a back up plan. Sometimes three or four. Just in case.

Carefully she set her new prize of circuitry aside, along with the other pieces she had collected. A few more items, and she could begin building, she really was on her way with helping out. "Okay, what do ya need help with?"

The Doctor grinned a little; he'd liked River and was sort of disappointed that she hadn't been around. He'd felt she was old and young at the same time - and that was a combination he in particular appreciated.

"Oh?" He marveled in her confidence and it was sort of refreshing really - he wasn't used to being with people who thought that they could do so much on their own; well, helpful things anyway.

"Well, I think it'll help immensely to get the alternator out and really have some wiring to work with," he twisted another nut between his fingers, wincing as he tried to force it to move through sheer force of will. "Did I miss your name?" He asked innocently, wondering if it was early onset of weariness that caused him to have a sudden bout with forgetfulness. He didn't often forget things - and he felt like maybe she had in fact said her name. He'd scratch his head if he wasn't wrist deep in bumper car.

With a nod of her head that somehow seemed to just ooze with more cheerfulness than a single gesture ought to rightfully, Kaylee gave her happy yes of an answer. "It's not too difficult, and there seem to be enough broke down things about that pieces and bits might be just waiting to be found. To be made into something new and useful."

It was nearly her philosophy in life, that things that were seemingly useless were just waiting for someone new to come along and see its potential for a new creation. If you could not, or did not want to fix it in the first place, which was nearly always the option she chose.

Carnival rides, however, she did not have much use for at the moment. A heater, that she did.

Catching the wince on his face, Kaylee remembered the greased rag she had been using earlier. The piece Logan had so helpfully retrieved for her had resisted even the lubricated rag, but maybe the Doctor's piece would like it better and behave. She went to retrieve it, and held it out in offering as she was reminded that she had forgotten to introduce herself. "Oh sorry, I hadn't meant ta not tell ya who I was. I'm Kaylee, Kaylee Frye."
