Day Five - Mid Morning

Who: Kaylee Frye, Wolverine and OTA
What: Scavenging
When: Day Five, early morning
Where: The Carnival
Rating: TBA
Status: Completed

Having woken up entirely alone, and without any knowledge of River's whereabouts, Kaylee thought she could at least head to the Carnival. After all, River knew she would go there, didn't she? If her friend had left of her own volition, she would come and Kaylee would be able to feel relieved and scold her for running off. If she had not gone on her own...well, she refused to think about that. River would find her, and then everything would be shiny while they waited for the Cap'n and the others to come and find them.

Besides, having her hands busy would do her some good.

The moment she had stepped foot within range, the young woman had found herself climbing under one of the machines and searching for parts that might help her in her newest jury-rigged device. Not a way to make wine over the engine, not this time. But something simpler, and hopefully a bit easier, heating water. Just without fuel or even outmoded electrical conduits. How she would feed energy into the device still had to be figured out, but she would. She always did.

Bits of grass were getting into her mussed brown curls and she clipped the side of her hand against a piece of machinery. "Ouch," Kaylee grumbled, not halting in her trying to remove the piece she was intent on collecting.

Logan hung back in the treeline for a while after Sid left, watching the canival. Consequently, he saw the woman arrive and head for one of the rides, ass waving in the wind as she worked on the underside.

Logan strolled over and leaned on a strut nearby, watching her for a minute. When she said 'ouch', he snorted. "Dunno what you're doing under there, doll, but you're not supposed to hurt yourself." He said.

There was a gear in the way, rusted in place, and she was down to using a rock held in her hand to manually adjust it out of place. Extremely low tech, but she would have to search for/configure better tools later. Now she was far more focused on getting her pieces together first.

At the sound of a man's gravelly voice, Kaylee froze. Scooting herself back out along the ground, she looked up at the stranger from her place in the midst of green grass and twigs. Covered in a bit of dust and rust and oil under her fingernails already, with the addition of blades of grass perched in her hair.

"Hello," she finally chirped, after checking out the very handsome man towering over her. "I'm," with a point of her finger she indicated the bottom of the carnival ride engine she had been fiddling with. "Collecting parts."

With a push of a finger to brush stray hair out of her face, and knowing what a mess she was at the moment (why was she always covered in something or other when a shiny boy/man came up?), Kaylee looked at him. "Were you the one who offered to help me build?"

Well, one thing was clear. This gal was /not/ one of the people in charge of this place. That sort wouldn't allow themselves to get that layered in muck, grime, and dirt.

One side of his mouth quirked up in recognition of the fact she was checking him out, and he shrugged. "Collecting parts for what?" He wanted to know, then. "Nah. M'name's Logan. Depending on what you're trying to build, though, I could probably help."

Kaylee was most definitely not in charge. Perhaps of building this water heater she was designing in her head, modifying existing plans she already knew based on what she was able to get. But she liked building things, and was good at it, and everyone needed hot water. Except for that one strange person who thought it was character building.

'C'mon,' she thought, 'who wouldn't check him out?'

"A water heater," the young woman immediately replied, despite the fact that it was a strange man approaching her in an abandoned Carnival, Kaylee only saw a friendly face. "The water in the showers isn't heated, and nobody likes an ice bath y'know."

Getting to her feet, she brushed her hands off on her overalls before she held one out to him. "I'm Kaylee. Sure, ya can help me. I can't get this gear unstuck to free a piece and," holding up the small rock in her palm, to show him her limited tools. "I haven' found any tools yet, but I'm sure they're jus' around the corner." Punctuating her statement was a wide and beaming smile.

So. No tools, and no heated water, huh? Information piece by piece, but Logan didn't mind. Kaylee seemed to be assuming he was a regular here ... which was mildly confusing ... and amusing. She was either a simpleton ... which her desire to build a water heater kind of nixed, or had decided to grin and bear it ... a mentality Logan wholeheartedly approved of.

"Water heater wouldn't be too hard, doll ... all you need is a big-ass metal container, something to sit it on, and wood for a fire."

Which brought up the fact he couldn't remember smelling campfire smoke. Odd. But then, if this place was full of ex-city slickers ... not so odd.

A wood fire powered water heater? That was such an ancient idea, that it only existed in the very barest regions possible. Even some of the poorer reasons had water heaters powered by far more advanced technologies.

"Oh I'm not building that sort of water heater, I just have yet to find the right materials for solar panels just yet." The design was already forming in her mind, and she believed that she could find all that she needed right here in the carnival. Although perhaps she would have to look in a few other places for other things. Such as non-corroded wiring.

The elements had not been kind to these machines, and it saddened her. Well, if much ever did.

Despite the fact that he had not taken her hand, she decided to leave it extended for at least a minute more. Perhaps he simply had not noticed the gesture.

Logan couldn't help a snort of amusement. "Doll, if you're reduced to the level of having to make a water heater ... doing one heated by wood will give you the time to find the shit for the fancier ones." He points out. "So that you don't freeze your pretty little ass off in the meantime." He eyed her hand, then shrugged and shook it, his grip strong and hand unexpectedly heavy for his size. "First rule of survival, doll ... get done what needs doing. Worry about frills, frippery, and fancy shit later."

Despite his cynicism over the idea, Kaylee simply grinned. "Shouldn't take me more than a day, maybe a little less if I can find the proper tools ya know." She shrugged her shoulders, "I woulda begun one tha' runs on carbon dioxide, since we're in a bubble, but I don' think we've got the right things for that. So solar-powered it is."

The handshake reminded her both of Jayne and the one time she had met a man with a partially cybernetic arm. Still, he might be sensitive about that, so she said nothing about that.

Survival she understood, just not the same kind he had.

"I'll remember that," she smiled, then asked a question tugging at her curiosity. "What year are ya from?"

"Uh huh. Right. And has /anything/ been that easy around here?" It was, in part, an honest question. Maybe the fuckers holding them here were occasionally nice. Maybe. "In my experience, it's better to do something simple and quick, than hope like fuck you can get what you need for something fancier ... especially when your ass is on the line."

He sincerely doubted they had the stuff needed to make solar powered /anything/, here. Shit. He didn't know what all went into making solar powered shit, but it was a damn sight more involved than she was making it sound. And then things just got wierd.

"What /year/ am I from? What the hell kind of question is that?" He wanted to know. Maybe she /was/ crazy after all.

"Well," it really did not need to be considered. "No. There are all sorts of odd things happening here. People tied up and left for wolves, strange noises in the woods, things that appear in the stores when no one is looking..." She shook her head, "People disappearing and reappearing."

His explanation made sense, but still, "Solar powered water heaters can be done in a jiffy, you'll see." Kaylee had fixed her first solar powered generator at the age of four, building a simple one from scratch should not be hard at all.

"Oh, people here are from all over. Time, places, very few are from the same spots." She nodded once, "It's a good question to ask."

Oh joy and rapture. NOT. Logan snarled "Fuck" mostly under his breath, giving his head a shake.

And that sick sensation was back in the pit of his stomach. On the one hand, it'd be easy to dismiss Kaylee's claims as the natterings of someone who'd clearly lost their marbles. On the other hand ... Sid hadn't known what the fuck a mutant was ... and unless you lived under a rock, you knew at least the word, and usually more than that.

Or, well, you did if you were from where Logan was from. Shit. Fuck. This was ... bad. Really, really, REALLY bad. As in, made the fuckers that worked him over the first time look like chump change. Fuuuuuuuck.

"Wierd fucking thing to have to ask, but ... 2000." Logan finally said, glaring around at the place.

And River was missing. Kaylee had not seen her all day, and while that was not that long of a day so far, it was too long. Too long in this place. "Hey, you haven't seen a thin girl, a couple years younger than me? Long brown hair, might've been dancin' or talkin' ta trees?" Please have seen River. Concern tinted her usually cheerful expression, long enough to await the answer.

If he hadn't, it did not necessarily mean anything bad. She could have just been somewhere else entirely.

"Oh, I met someone from around there. Most seem to be from around that time, River and I were, are, the furthest out I think." Watching him look around as if he could set fire to the place with his mind and was planning on it, Kaylee tilted her head with a quick raising of her shoulders. "From 2517 myself."

No wonder you think you can just snap your fucking fingers and make a solar powered water heater. Got news for you, doll ... that sort of shit? Ain't readily available in the early 21st century, and for damn fucking sure ain't gonna be easily available /here/."

"Oh," Kaylee was surprised to find that he was new. Although that did say a lot about the fact that more people were still coming in. "I've been here for...four days?"

Completely oblivious to his cynicism, as well as the fact that he believed that she could not find what she needed. As was her way, Kaylee simply shook her head. "I've looked over a few manuals of your Ancient technology, and most of it can be adaptable with a few tweaks here and there." Several books on engines and technology had at least given her clues on what she could adapt, and what she had not.

"Can you do me a favor?" she asked suddenly.

"Well, these rides, ya see," she bent over to point underneath the machinery of the one she had just been beneath. "They have most of the pieces I need. I just need a container ta hold the water, and some reflective material ta catch the sunlight. Oh, and some wiring that's not corroded, these have been outside for too long."

Kaylee was already moving to get back beneath the machine, which thankfully was held up off the ground nearly all the way around for easy access. "There's a piece I need, but it's stuck," using the rock in her hand, she attempted to press against the gear that was holding it in place. "And I can't," she gave a quiet grunt as she continued trying to dislodge it. "Get. It. Out."

Having been pointed in the right direction by George the Doctor arrived at the carnival with arm loads of scrapped bits and pieces. There were copper coils and wires and metal bits that clanged a bit as he walked along. He would have been singing but he was currently rather focused on keeping everything in his arms. He hadn't yet dropped anything since he'd left George and he intended to keep it that way.

"Hello?" He called, hearing a pair of voices not too far ahead. The Carnival, it appeared would be a popular place.

Logan shook his head and rolled his eyes, but what the hell. "Lemme take a look. I can probably get it loose." He said. Before Kaylee could reply or get out of the way, another voice made itself known. Logan turned in that direction, glowering until he spotted the slightly geeky looking guy with an armload of shit. "This place is just full of overly optimistic dreamers, ain't it?" He grumbled under his breath, then snorted.

"Bit more to your left." He called, then. "Who the hell are you?"

Really, he could have climbed under there with her, Kaylee would not have minded. Not at all. He was very shiny, and tasty looking. Nearly a year without anything even resembling even over the shirt action.

It was a shame that he was covered in so many layers, even with her good eye for the shapes of things (not to mention her quite fantasy driven imagination), she could barely tell that he had a great body hidden away. Why bother hiding it? It really was not fair to wave hidden shiny in her face when she was supposed to be putting together something for the good of all.

Kaylee's sudden trip down imagining him losing clothing piece by piece was interrupted by a new voice. Pulling her back into reality and back out from beneath the machine.

"Oh!" She exclaimed happily, "Are you the Doctor?"

The Doctor actually sort of bounced a little - he wasn't so used to people knowing his name before he met them.

"That's me, I'm the Doctor," he said with a grin. He'd ignore the pushiness of the man and just sort of grin a moment before setting down all of his thrift shop finds.

"I could use any bits of belts you're not planning to use," he remarked with a smile.

Logan couldn't quite help but snort in amusement. Kaylee was ... well, about as obvious as a neon sign in the dead of night. At least to him. He cocked an eyebrow as the bouncy geek confirmed his identity, and his expression went slightly sour. Eugh. This guy was worse than /Cyke/. Which was saying a lot.

With a shrug, he pulled off his overshirts and got down on Kaylee's level with a not-quite-hidden smirk, reaching into get at whatever it was she had been after and giving it a solid whack. He skinned his knuckles, but the thing came loose ... and with any luck, Kaylee'd be to bedazzled and drooly to notice the few drops of blood that escaped before the scrapes closed over.

"Ooh, you brought wiring? You could just be my hero." Just what she needed if he had enough to spare for her own project. Naturally she would help any way she could with his, as well. "'Course, there should be some things here that'll help you help us stop being so humped."

Time to ogle Logan some more.

Really, she could not help it! Kaylee would freely admit to a bit of floozy-like behavior, but she had had a long, long drought when it came to hot boys/men and getting her breathing and heart rate up.

It was really cruel to put rippling muscles up close and personal, only covered by a single layer of cloth now. Him stripping each shirt off was now going in her permanent memory bank, to be played and replayed in slow motion. All, broad shoulders and...arms. Guh.

The Doctor kind of felt like he'd managed to step into something. Nothing quite as stinky as dog poop or as sticky as gum - but something a bit more obtrusive, or that he was the obtrusive one. Wait, he was the obtrusive one? The Gallifreyan must be getting tired because his brain was just starting to sound a bit nonsensical.

He'd already labeled the other man a brute and hadn't quite had the opportunity to size up the woman. Still, he had his things and so far there hadn't been any belt bits materializing.

"I'll just work on this one over here," he said, sidling up to a banana yellow car, feeling kind of sad at the moment to be cannibalizing it for parts when he'd much rather be riding around in it. Dropping his bits and scrap into the seat he took up one of the sharper, skinny bits and began to use it like a screwdriver. Oh, how he yearned for his sonic about now.

Logan damn near burst something trying not to laugh as Kaylee all but swooned. He did grin at her, a knowing, just shy of lecherous grin.

"What sort of belts you need, Doc? There's a coupla sizes under here." And a couple of different breeds of belt, too ... mechanical and 'hold up your pants'.

He was betting Kaylee was more interested in one than the other.

Ooh, very nice smile. Kaylee did moon a little over some male attention, even if it was more teasing than getting anything done. A girl could forget was sex was even in concept after so long out in the Black with overprotective 'siblings' around. Her sex life had pretty much dried up to a trickle when she had come aboard Serenity, a sad fact given that she had joined the crew at seventeen.

Okay, so it did not even technically count as male attention because he had not actually done anything, but that just went to show how much like a sponge she was for the stuff. Even being down to one shirt and inches away was enough to have her mooning and sighing.

No matter how very, very sexy Logan was. What with the strong muscles and getting up close and not nearly personal enough. No matter how distracting he was, Kaylee remembered to ask an all important question.

She took the mechanical part out of Logan's much larger hands without asking, looking over at the Doctor working on the little yellow car. "Doctor? Have you seen a girl with long brown hair and combat boots? Her name's River and I don't know where she is."

"Timing belt, vee belt, and perhaps a standard flat belt would do fine," the stranger's insinuation was lost on the Doctor. Sure, he was full of future aphorism and innuendo; however, his mind rarely took the day trip into the land of sexual banter.

"River? I met her at the carnival," he started, turning catching his knuckles on an errant edge as he tried to undo a bolt with his bare hands. "She's missing?" He asked, his head jerking up quickly. Martha had gone missing, and Dean, and now River? Why? It's not like any of them had anything in common... Save him anyway.

"Have any need for some gaskets?" His face now planted right back into the guts of the bumper car.

Logan kept right on smirking, even as he checked the underside of the machine he and Kaylee were mostly under.

"Hmmmm ... think I see a timing belt down here." He said, and scooted closer to it.

Which, of course, required some maneuvering with Kaylee. "So what're you tryin' to build, Doc?" He wanted to know. Might be worth a laugh. Solar powered water heaters, indeed.

Disappointed, but never disheartened, Kaylee nodded. Returning to the task at hand, because obviously she could continue a conversation while collecting pieces that she needed. "Prolly jus' wanderin' around," she hoped aloud, her speech devolving a bit with such an infusion of optimism into it all at once.

Since she had slid back under the machine, Logan's 'scooting' had him moving further under the machine parts above. On her side, she was pretty much facing his belt in a position that was far less fun than it sounded. Mostly because of the fact that she barely knew the guy (okay, that had not stopped her in the long past) and just as much because he had strictly been hands off. And, she mostly stuck to waiting for the first move, no matter how many months and months and months it took sometimes.

"G-gaskets is nice." No mention hear of nearly 'blowing' one, because even in her time that meant something quite different when faced with a man's belt buckle.

"Sonic pulse generator with quadruple amplification and modulation control," he rambled, yanking a gasket off with little effort and setting it on the floor.

The Doctor hadn't known River long, but he was fairly certain she was the type to wander about. Though, how safe it could be to wander in times like these he couldn't help but wonder.

"Eck!" The Time Lord exclaimed, jumping back as a bit of oil from the dilapidated machine squirted out unexpectedly. The chucks, for the moment were safe.

Scrunching his brow and wiping his forehead with a quite dirty palm the Doctor realized how much his beloved trainers meant to him. "Never much thought of that before," he muttered quietly to himself.

Logan, in the middle of getting the belt free, stopped dead and started laughing his ASS off.

"WHAT?" He wanted to know, when he could finally talk through the laughter. "What the /fuck/. And I thought a solar powered water heater was reaching. Shit, doc ... whydoncha just build a shuttle for a moon launch? You've got as much chance of that working as you do that pulse generator thing."

He finally went back to pulling the belt free. "What the /hell/ do the two of you have against simple, basic shit that has a chance in hell of actually, you know, being useful? Where the hell are you going to get the /power/ to run that generator, doc, if you by some miracle manage to build it?" He scooted back out from under the machine, one arm brushing against Kaylee. Even mid-tirade against their apparent idiocy, he winked at her, then got to his feet and handed Doc the belt. "Git your damn head out of the clouds and into the practicalities. This is /survival/. Worry about that first, and the fripperies later."

The Doctor's volunteered building project perked up Kaylee's interest. "That sounds awful complicated, d'you need any help with it?" She could help, although her current priority was the water heater. If only because it would make life easier on a short term scale.

Logan's cynicism and laughter simply washed off of the cheerful mechanic, who was more excited at the prospect of a complicated project. Even if she couldn't be involved, she could at least watch and possibly learn a thing or two.

"Solar powered water heaters are simple," she reminded him. Trying to focus on anything but the fact that his arm brushing against her side was enough to make her want far more brushing. "Built my first when I was only about knee high, with spare parts leftover from Daddy's shop."

If the Doctor was at all phased by the strange man's reaction to his plan, he didn't really show it. Currently elbow deep in go-cart bits, the Time Lord was currently fishing out the alternator and adjacent battery. Sure, the battery wouldn't have much juice to it - perhaps just a few residual sparks - but he didn't need an entire generator.

"Solar powered water heater?" The Doctor perked. He hadn't thought he'd have the necessary components for solar power - namely the correct ratios of carbon and silicon for the pannelling; but, the spunky blonde seemed fairly confident in her abilities.

"I'd quite appreciate a hand, actually," The Doctor replied, looking up with a rather cheshire grin as he pulled another belt from the banana-hued car.

"Do you have much experience with amplification improvisation? I thought I might be able to dash together a speaker from existing parts; but, I haven't been able to find anything just yet."

Elbow deep in the car's guts once more, "Well, look at that," he said, yanking out the grounding circuitry for the motor. "Think you have any use for this bit?"

"Oh, okay," Kaylee did deflate somewhat as Logan took off. "I'll see you later!"

While she did watch him walk off, with a tilt of her head that tapered off with a soft sigh, she was up and over to the Doctor. "Hi, I'm Kaylee," a single strand of hair was brushed back, before she held out one hand. Grease already under the nailbeds of her fingers. "Shannon wrote about you."

"'m making a solar powered water heater, so we don't have ta keep freezin' ta pieces everytime we wanna get scrubbed clean." With both hands eventually on the side of the vehicle he sat in, she nodded. "Don't know everything about them, but I know enough ta help wherever ya need." He held out the circuitry and her eyes lit up as if he had given her a shipful of gold studded with diamonds. "Ooh, shiny."

The Doctor didn't have much of a reaction either as the strange man took off. He seemed either annoyed at being out of his depth, or annoyed that people might be working on things he didn't understand. Either way, the Doctor knew he didn't have time to try and reason with him. He was growing more tired and less focused with each quarter hour that passed by, so, he knew he had to make up his mind and soon.

"Nice meeting you, Kaylee," he stopped to wipe his hands on the back of his long coat with a smile. "She did?" He was sort of surprised Shannon would be writing about him - wasn't she busy with the census?

"That's thoughtful, though I'm hoping I can get this working so we won't have to take too many showers."

Watching her reaction to the circuitry, the Doctor became more and more convinced that she might actually be able to help him and not just putting on some sort of show. That was a fantastic thought to have - suddenly he didn't feel quite so alone in the realm of scientifically brilliant.

Fantastic.

"She did," Kaylee repeated back in the affirmative. "River talking 'bout ya too. Said you were buildin' something ta try ta get us all out of here." Probably was best not to mention ratings of attractiveness and the like, better for all that way. Surreptitiously, she double checked her pocket to see if her journal was safely put away.

"Course," she agreed. "But it's pro'lly better just in case. Won't take too long, maybe a day, maybe two to get it up and going." Better to have all bases covered, just in case. If there was one thing that she had learned from her time onboard Serenity, in experience with Mal's plans that never worked quite like they were supposed to, it was that you should always have a back up plan. Sometimes three or four. Just in case.

Carefully she set her new prize of circuitry aside, along with the other pieces she had collected. A few more items, and she could begin building, she really was on her way with helping out. "Okay, what do ya need help with?"

The Doctor grinned a little; he'd liked River and was sort of disappointed that she hadn't been around. He'd felt she was old and young at the same time - and that was a combination he in particular appreciated.

"Oh?" He marveled in her confidence and it was sort of refreshing really - he wasn't used to being with people who thought that they could do so much on their own; well, helpful things anyway.

"Well, I think it'll help immensely to get the alternator out and really have some wiring to work with," he twisted another nut between his fingers, wincing as he tried to force it to move through sheer force of will. "Did I miss your name?" He asked innocently, wondering if it was early onset of weariness that caused him to have a sudden bout with forgetfulness. He didn't often forget things - and he felt like maybe she had in fact said her name. He'd scratch his head if he wasn't wrist deep in bumper car.

With a nod of her head that somehow seemed to just ooze with more cheerfulness than a single gesture ought to rightfully, Kaylee gave her happy yes of an answer. "It's not too difficult, and there seem to be enough broke down things about that pieces and bits might be just waiting to be found. To be made into something new and useful."

It was nearly her philosophy in life, that things that were seemingly useless were just waiting for someone new to come along and see its potential for a new creation. If you could not, or did not want to fix it in the first place, which was nearly always the option she chose.

Carnival rides, however, she did not have much use for at the moment. A heater, that she did.

Catching the wince on his face, Kaylee remembered the greased rag she had been using earlier. The piece Logan had so helpfully retrieved for her had resisted even the lubricated rag, but maybe the Doctor's piece would like it better and behave. She went to retrieve it, and held it out in offering as she was reminded that she had forgotten to introduce herself. "Oh sorry, I hadn't meant ta not tell ya who I was. I'm Kaylee, Kaylee Frye."
