Day 22, Morning
Who: Sam Winchester and Selene
What: Getting down to business
Where: Near the theatre
When: Day 22; 9:00 AM
Rating: Definite R
Status: Active

It was almost funny how there was no one else at Vas more likely to know exactly how Sam felt right at that moment than Shannon and how it was because of that very reason that he was unable to stay near her. She'd had to relive her brother's death and Sam had been faced with his brother's remains. It wasn't enough that they'd killed him, they'd also had to make him a mockery of everything he'd stood for in life. Even now the thought of Dean's broken neck and the shell of him that had come after Sam the day before made his stomach turn. If he hadn't already emptied what little contents that had been in his stomach shortly after having to fight the zombie version of Dean for his life he was sure he would've done it again. Neither he or Shannon wanted to talk about their dead brothers and all that was left was a silence that made it hard to concentrate. Which was why he'd scribbled her a note to say he'd be back and set out before she'd woken up. He felt guilty about it, but he couldn't handle the sympathy in her eyes or knowing that she wouldn't push too hard because he'd have every right to push back. It was a shitty situation, but he might as well take advantage of it. Neither of them were ready to talk about what had happened and Sam didn't know if he ever would be. Twice Dean had almost died on him and twice they'd found a way around it. There'd been casualties, there had been his dad's sacrifice but in the end Dean had still been there and somehow Sam had known that everything was going to be alright as long as he still had Dean.

Dean had made the deal to bring Sam back and the thought that his brother's time would be up in a year had felt to Sam that someone had cut him open and gutted him. Here though…here this Dean hadn't even made any deal. Here Sam had gotten three weeks. Three goddamn weeks of fighting and sidestepping and trying to get to know each other all over again. Three weeks of trying to do what it took to survive and getting so wrapped up in other things and people that they'd barely been brothers at all. He couldn't even remember the last thing he'd said to him. They'd gone through the tunnels with the Doctor, looking for the others and emerged only to find that everyone on the screens had died and Sam had drifted off to be by himself to grieve for Shannon. He'd always thought that if something ever happened to Dean he'd know it. He'd feel it somehow, someway… but the body that had come after him hadn't been fresh. His brother could've been dead for days and Sam hadn't had any idea. That was what hurt the most. The fact that deep down Sam had thought that if anyone could handle themselves, if anyone could take care of things it was Dean. He hadn't been acting like himself, but it had never occurred to Sam that he'd be vulnerable. Despite the fact that they'd faced their own morality on a fairly regular basis it had never really occurred to Sam that he could die until he had. And it had never occurred to him that Dean could die until he'd been staring what was left of him in the eye and realized that his brother was gone and he wasn't coming back.

The torch made from oil painting scraps flickered in the drizzle as Sam made his way towards the theatre. He held the torch up with one hand and one of the axes from the pharmacy in the other. He was looking for a distraction, hopefully in the form of a fight. He would take no pleasure in cutting off the head of someone who had once been a resident of Vas but he wasn't going to sit still while there was still a threat to the people he cared about.

Protect the others. It was what Dean would've wanted him to do. It was what his dad would've wanted him to do. And seeing how he was now the only Winchester left…someone had to carry on the family business.

It occurred to her that perhaps they hadn't heard of victims because they were dead, and soon to be zombies, but she doubted it. The vampire hadn't come across evidence of struggles either. "Might as well. It's surely easier for two to take out a zombie than one." she smiled slightly, even as she was having similar thoughts. Selene fell into step with him as they began to walk, easily keeping pace.

"It does seem a little strange to me that they don't appear to be moving in groups. If they hunt by scent it would be logical for them to end up in a group even if it wasn't their intent, unless there simply aren't enough of them to travel together." She was half thinking out loud, half bouncing the idea off someone she presumed was like-minded. He was out here looking for zombies same as she, and he didn't have the look of someone who was in actuality looking for death. In her mind, she was fairly certain Sam was some sort of hunter, and so long as he was competent she didn't really care what it was he hunted where he came from.

"Surely," Sam said, the corner of his mouth twitching up slightly at her remark. There was something about her that seemed off. Something in the way that she moved. She was confident and silent as she walked, making less noise than even he was. Even if he couldn't tell by the way she'd held the gun he would've known by her ability to barely make a sound as they moved.

Sam glanced over at her and raised his eyebrows slightly. "You got a point," he said, catching the sound of Dean in his own voice. He wondered if maybe he wasn't trying to channel Dean a little. Though Dean probably would've thought about that before she voiced it. "Not sure if they go by scent though," Sam said. "I mean, my..." He trailed off. "The zombie that came after me didn't know I was there until I started walking towards him. They might be limited in what they can track."

Still, it was an idea worth exploring. Especially if it got them all in one place. "You run into any zombies where you're from?" He asked, looking ahead again.

She glanced over as he spoke about the zombie he had run into, noticing his pause but saying nothing about it. The information was more interesting than the thought that he had known the zombie he encountered. "Perhaps there's some variance among them. Depending on how dead they are some have better use of their senses than others?" It was a thought at least. "They seem rather primitive in function, the way they focus on a goal and don't deviate at all, and don't seem to register pain either, so it would make sense if scent or sight or both where primarily how they hunt."

It felt a little strange, how normal it felt to be discussing prey, even if with a human. But in a way it was exciting, having something new to go after. "No, never. Heard plenty of myths and of course, people love their horror films, but if I hadn't seen one myself I wouldn't have believed it." Selene replied with a quiet laugh. Not that she put much stock in myths, considering the things people wrote about her kind. "You?"

"Maybe," Sam said with a small nod, wondering if he should feel something about the way she was coolly listing off the traits of something that had been his brother less than 24 hours ago. He didn't. He didn't feel anything. Well, he didn't feel much and that was the way he wanted to keep it. They were just threats now, not the people he'd loved or cared about or knew. "This one wasn't that old." It'd only been two days tops since the last time he'd seen Dean. Somewhere between then and yesterday he'd died without Sam knowing. Sam didn't know whether to feel guilty or relieved that he hadn't had a vision of his death.

"Yeah, well horror films tend to get it wrong in all the important parts," Sam said, giving a humorless laugh. "People think they know what's out there, but they have no idea."

He looked over at her, his first instinct to lie, but there was no reason to. "Once," he said. "This guy brought back his girlfriend. I guess sometimes people have a hard time letting go."

A small smirk wanted to cross her face but she held it back. People really did have no idea until they were face to face with the truth. It was something that could apply far past the realm of people not understanding creatures, but to think of it that way would force her to think of her own centuries long deception.

She arched a brow as she looked over when he mentioned having dealt with a zombie before, genuinely surprised and curious. "Really? How did you deal with it, standard decapitation?" It was kind of a default, when nothing else would kill something. Something she was very familiar with.

Sam gave a small laugh and shook his head. "No, this one was a little trickier. We probably could've tried it, but I think all it would've done was made her head a carry on."

He looked over at Selene, surprised to be sharing hunting notes with someone else. "We tried silver bullets, but the way he brought her back meant we had to nail her to back into her grave bed with a sword or sharp piece of wood. It's probably where the whole vampire staking lore came from." He sighed. "It wasn't fun."

She listened with interest, holding back the questions his words brought to mind. If Selene was finding out one thing in this place, it was that some people's worlds were far more complicated than hers. And all in all, she thought she was dealing rather well with such revelations.

"And staking actually worked? Hm." She supposed it made sense. Zombies and vampires, both considered undead creatures. Her breed wasn't exactly, but she knew her lore. "I can imagine it wasn't. Creatures can't make it easy, after all." Then there'd be no fun, no sport. The vampire thought it but didn't say it. His mention of silver bullets had her mind turning, though. "I'm going to take a guess that there are werewolves where you come from. Unless you just like being fancy and using silver bullets." she added with a grin as she looked over at him.

"Yeah, it was just about the only thing that did," Sam said, giving her small smile. It faded completely at the mention of werewolves a minute later.

He took in a deep breath and held it for a moment, focusing on the road in front of him before letting it out slowly. He nodded. "Yeah, we've got them," he said, his tone not exactly inviting further questions. "Silver bullets are good for a lot of things," he said, willing the subject to change. "Not just werewolves."
