Entry tags:!complete, day 20, location: museum, remy lebeau, the doctor (nine), the doctor (ten)

Who: The Tenth Doctor, the Ninth Doctor & Remy LeBeau
Where: The Museum
When: Day 20, 7:15am
What:  Remy wakes up and is attacked by birds!
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete

After dropping the young Doctor off at the gym, Remy had decided to head back towards his barn, sniffling and sneezing the entire way there. The Doctor had been right, he'd spent the entire day in the rain the previous day, and now he had a cold. It was awful. So he'd laid around in his large bed in the barn for a while until the sun had gone down and he'd headed back over to the gym to glance in on the kids. After watching for a bit, he had finally decided to sleep in town tonight, instead of way out in his barn, so that when the others awoke, he'd know quickly if they were still children, or if they had returned to their normal state. So the red-head had staked out a place to sleep not too far away from the museum, and had settled down on a park bench on his back and had tipped his fedora low over his eyes to get some sleep.

Come morning, he had felt someone tugging at his sleeve.. then the tugging turned to pinching. And it was only when his hat was knocked away and tons of little hands were pinching him that he finally opened his eyes and realized that they weren't little hands at all-- they were beaks. Bird beaks. About fifteen of the dark animals were pecking at him, grabbing at his clothing, tearing his duplicate coat, biting through his clothes, causing his flesh to bleed. And as he sat up and started swatting them away with gloved hands, they got more vicious. They pecked at his face, sliced open his cheek, his lip, above his right eyebrow, all along his arms through his clothes, his jeans-- and all the red-head could do for the moment was break into a run to try and escape them, shouting curses in French and Lord knows what other languages. He just barely made it up the stairs, in his torn and ruined coat, before he forced open a door of the museum and stumbled inside, actually tripping on the doorstop and falling inside onto his knees, before he quickly spun around and threw up both gloved hands against that door and slammed it loudly closed, locking the birds out.

And locking everyone else in.

The Cajun was panting hard and was quickly pushing back up to his feet so that bloody hands (they'd pecked at his exposed fingers, the pinky and pointer on both hands) and had caused them to bleed) could flip the old lock on the door and hold it shut, then he leaned forward against it. He didn't know what was going on, but he certainly didn't like it. Not one bit. It was like a freaking Alfred Hitchcock movie!

Oh, it was his own voice again. This time it wasn't in his head. Fantastic.

He looked up, blank faced. All he could think about was the rather nasty way the other Time Lord had said Gallifrey was gone effectively breaking his little hearts. "The birds. Don't you read this?" He asked, waving the journal at him.

"So, what can I do for you, Doctor? Have something that needs destroying?" Cheeky bastard.

"Haven't had time, no. I've got a rightfully nervous juvenile werewolf in the next room over, insisting he's incapable of leaving the room because there's something outside." Well, animals did have that sort of sense, didn't they? But birds? The Doctor had left his book in the next room over, so was coming forward those bright blues focusing on it for a moment before they landed back on his counterpart.

"Birds? And nope, no destroying yet. Haven't got any little kids you need terrified, do you?" It was his way of apologizing.. to himself.

"That's unfortunate," he said with reference to the werewolf. He closed up the damned journal and set it aside. watching as the Time Lord came on inside. He kicked out the chair from under the desk, offering him a place to sit.

"I can't believe you made me.. us... him.. cry. Really? Wasn't like it was your first time around the block after all." He shook his head. That might have been an apology, and Ten knew it was, but that didn't mean he had to like it.

"Right. Well, now I've got one brother Winchester, Shannon, and Rose all thinking I'm the worst bloke in the universe. Thinking I might be able to convince Ianto to join their forces if I play my hand right." Self deprecating humor, not usually his style, but today he was feeling awfully scummy.

Nine wasn't willing to repeat his apology, so Ten could take it or leave it. He was, however, moving to take up his seat in that chair and letting out a slow breath, hands coming to rest on the creaky wooden arm rests that the old chair had to offer. It was uncomfortable, but it was better than nothing.

"Well, you've got one better than I do." Because he only had Rose and Remy who thought he was the worst bloke in the universe.. because Ten didn't count. They were the same person.

"So we have killer birds lose today," Or so he assumed they were killer, after watching the bloody Cajun run off and disappear outside. The kid wasn't too smart. "A mob of people who hate us," Though, that happened often enough that it was nearly old news which was.. well.. sort of depressing, really. "And a modulator to get working, isn't that right? I've got parts from the petrol station, meant to work it out with you yesterday but, well.. we both know how that worked out, don't we?" This time, his words came with a smile.

"Well, what about Sarah Jane's surveyor? Didn't she try and get in touch with you? We need that if we're going to figure out just what the wall is made out of," he took his glasses out of his pocket and plunked them onto his nose.

Ten knew what he really wanted to talk to Nine about, so he dropped the topic of the modulator, crying six year olds, and angry mobs. He wanted to talk about Rose.

"I'm doing everything I can to get her back to you," he said quietly, pushing back farther onto the desktop as he fiddled with a spring he pulled from his pocket. "She knows you. Me? She can stay mad at me forever." He tried to give Nine a smile.

"Sarah Jane and I haven't managed to run into one another yet, and if there are dangerous birds outside, we're not likely to manage it today." Unless she happened to be in the museum.. and he had a sneaking suspicion that she wasn't.

However, when Ten began talking about Rose, Nine focused those intense blue eyes on him again. "There's not going to be anything you can do to get her back to me. She's angry right now, we both are." And they'd both get over it, like they always did. However, it wasn't really Rose that Nine had come in here to talk about, regardless of what the eldest Time Lord thought. It had been the Cajun running to the front doors that had caught his attention. And the Doctor never wanted to talk about himself, it was even easier to talk about himself from the future. And that was where he was headed with this.

"Did you chase him off, finally?" Because he knew he'd tried before, and had clearly failed. How hard was it to chase someone away? They'd done it lots of times. They'd done it with Rose, and they weren't even trying!

He had one word for you, Time Lord: "Tunnels." That's right, no excuses, really. You could go down into those underground corridors with a torch and find your way to the gym, or wherever she was. Hell, he'd take you there if he thought he'd be able to step foot anywhere but this room without bursting into flames.

Well, Nine wanted to talk Remy. Ten wanted to talk Rose. So, he did. "Right. And I'm telling you that you're the one she's got to end up with." Brown eyes leveled with blue ones, serious as the Martian Flu. "Because I kissed her and it was wrong. And I know I shouldn't have." Well, if you can't be honest with prior incarnations of yourself, who can you be honest with?

And look at that! No answers about Remy! Oh, this Doctor was good at avoidance!

He didn't have to be reminded about the tunnels, he knew about them. He was just avoiding in the same way you were. He wasn't sure he could see her right now, with everything that was going on with Rose. Still..

"You kissed her?" He voice lifted into a higher pitch, signaling his surprise and disbelief. "Kissed her?" Questioned again, as he shook his head. He wasn't that stupid, he wouldn't have... yes he would. "She'll end up with me. You just keep from putting your mouth or your hands anywhere near her. You've already got a new companion, haven't you? Put your mouth and hands on him, not her." It wasn't really permission, but more like a jab. Avoid that, Doctor.

And as that voice went up an octave he bowed his head. Figured he ought to tell himself because he deserved the reprimand. "Never get the chance again," he said quietly, looking up again square with Nine. Read into that what you will, Time Lord.

That second half of a jab? That bit about putting his hands and his mouth on that other companion only drew a shake of his head. "He isn't and he can't be. He's got to go back to where he came from."

So, he looked down at his shoes. He wasn't doing any of this on purpose, actually. None of it. He'd meant it when he'd told Jack that he kept putting his foot in it all around.

"Right. Now that's settled..." He looked around his room, wasn't much to fiddle with outside that tiny spring, was there?

Nine stared a long moment at Ten, taking in the words he said, then he nodded once, in understanding, and let the whole subject drop. He'd never get the chance to kiss Rose again, either. He never had. He likely never would. Though he would have liked to.. just once. Well, once when he wasn't saving her life, that was. It hadn't even happened for her yet, and she'd likely not even remember it once it had. He didn't want to think about it right now.

"You indulged yourself with her, what makes him any different?" Careful, Time Lord, or the Doctor would walk you into dangerous territory.

"Indulged?" See that look? That was a look of absolute misunderstanding. Because Ten really didn't quite understand what Nine was trying to say there. "Not quite certain how to even begin to respond to that bit," he looked away, replacing that spring in his pocket.

Right, so now he was going to get to fight with himself. Fantastic. He could do that.

"You can lash out all you like, but leave him out of this," he said quietly. "I'm doing everything I can to remedy it."

Indulged, Time Lord. Because Nine, no matter how he often thought of trying some sort of relationship with Rose Tyler, had never really entertained it. Not the way he was, anyway. Not as bitter and angry as he could be. Not with as reckless as he had been. No. It was best left this way.

"Remedy it? Remedy what, exactly?" Prompted from the younger of the two. "Remedy your feelings for him?" He wasn't blind, nor was he stupid, Ten. You had to know that he could see right through you, see everything that you were thinking. And when he'd seen you with the Cajun that one time, when he'd seen the Cajun with your much younger self, there hadn't been any room left to wonder. Of course, he hadn't expected that it had gone as far as it had. Not in a million years would he have expected that, due to the apparent nature of the red-head. He was clearly out for himself, and that infuriated the Doctor. "You know as well as I do that ignoring them doesn't make them go away all the time." It just made it hurt more, later, for both parties. But when it did work, and it pushed them away, it always left a hole. One easily covered up.. but never filled..

"Everything," he spoke over the second half of the question. He wasn't going to touch the subject of 'feelings.'

So what if Nine could see through it all? There wasn't anything left to hide, anyway. There wasn't anything left to really try and make up, either. No, it was all out there on the table, even to Jack. Perhaps not as plain as day for Rose, but that bit didn't matter anyway.

"I'm not talking about him with you." So much for being able to be honest with ones self, eh?

"What are you going to do to make it up to her?"

"I'm not talking about her with you." Returned in the same sharper tone that he'd used just a second ago, before he settled down and took those few seconds to collect himself again. You didn't want to talk about the Cajun, he didn't want to talk about the girl.

"What are you going to do to make it up to him?" Repeating questions to yourself wasn't going to change anything, Nine. It was only going to upset the both of you more. Still, he had done it to make his point, no matter how mean it had been to do it.

"Didn't we learn anything with Rose?" That was a softer question to the elder Time Lord. Hadn't the two of you learned anything by loving Rose Tyler? He'd have kept her if he could have. But he couldn't. He just couldn't. It was impossible.

His eyes narrowed at the older looking Time Lord as he parroted his own words back at him. "I don't have anything to make up to him." Lie. "So, that's just a stupid question. Losing your edge?" Jab, jab.

"I don't know what you think you're getting at," he pushed to stand, walking across the room and continuing to rather roughly fiddle with that spring. "I'm not looking for anything with either of them," he was only getting started, turning around. "There's more important things than that. We've got to get everyone out of here. You need to work on that surveyor, I'll wrap up the modulator. I've built one once already."

He was turning his back on Nine because he was taking a moment to call himself an out and out liar and punch himself in the gut. He was running away from both of them. He was throwing Rose at you so he didn't have to deal with her and he was avoiding Remy so he didn't have to make more excuses or tell any more lies.

"Anything else you'd like to discuss, Doctor?"

"Perhaps you should have thought of those things before you got yourself involved with both of them. For the past few days she's been fawning over you like you were Captain Frockless Harkness." And he knew little about the Cajun, but was relatively sure the same thing was happening there. But one of them was going to have to take responsibility for it, and it wasn't going to be him.

"You made everything wrong, Doctor. I just ended up in the middle of your mess," What a strange thing to say to yourself. "I expect you to fix it. But if you're incapable, I'll handle Rose. And if you ever expect anything to be peaceful around here, you'll talk to that Cajun, because Rose bloody well hates him." A word the Doctor seldom if ever used. But there it was. He had reason to. "And wouldn't it be easier on the both of us if we could just throw her at someone we trusted?" Like Remy. But did that mean.. that Nine was implying he trusted the thief, as well? Perhaps, though it didn't seem likely.

"Jealousy doesn't suit you." Zing.

So what if she was fawning over him? He'd fawned over her from the moment he'd seen her here, even if he could hardly say a word at all. "She loves you. You can't see it right this minute because you'd too bloody blind. Well, take my word for it, she does. So, you take that and you go and do something with it so I won't have to." Yes, he intended that exactly as it sounded. "You will not be throwing her at anyone. You will not be tossing her off. You will show her the affection she bloody well deserves." He'd come up toe to toe with himself there. "Because we both know you don't get another chance at this."

"You stay away from Remy. He doesn't need handled or taken care of. He's the loyalest damned creature I've ever met and I won't have you punishing him for it." You'd managed to get him angry, Doctor. Good for you.

Then they'd managed to both get the other angry, because that bit about what he was going to do with Rose? That wasn't sitting well with the older (younger) looking Doctor. "No, I don't get another chance. But neither do you. Not with her." However, when he came to stand toe to toe with himself, the slightly taller Doctor lifted his chin to look down on himself.

"Stay away from Remy? You just chased him out of here, bleeding, back out into the assault of deadly birds. And you want me to stay away from him? It seems to me you're doing a fine enough job of torturing that loyal creature all on your own." You'd hurt him with the comment about Rose, Ten. And he was ready to return that favor.

"You'd better take it then," he said through clenched teeth. His expression wanted to hint at a smile, instead it was much darker. Didn't you realize what he was saying he'd do for you, Nine? He'd let his own chance go for you. He'd let her pass him by, for you. And then you turned around and threw your anger right back in his face.

"I didn't chase him anywhere," and he hadn't. All he'd done was ask him to go away. Didn't mean he had to go out into the birds. He could have taken the tunnels. Should have taken the tunnels. He knew the other was right, though. He knew he kept kicking the Cajun, and every time he did he felt worse for it. Though, he did it because he thought sooner or later he'd stop trying. Eventually he'd break him of that nasty habit of coming back. Then he'd be able to get back to the way he was. He could go back to being detached and busy and careless. He could focus on his work and not the people - leave the people to Rose and Sarah Jane and Jack. He could make the modulator and get them all back where they belonged.

He wouldn't have to worry about where Remy was. He wouldn't get upset when he saw Remy tortured on the screens. He wouldn't mind the fact that Nine was here kicking him for acting like a total git. No, none of it would matter because the Cajun would be completely out of his system.

"I mean it. Keep away. I won't have you breaking his heart."

Oh, he realized exactly what you were telling him, Doctor. And really, he appreciated it.. but as Ten well knew, it was the delivery of the words that had set him off. The way he had told him what to do, demanded that he do it. It simply didn't sit well with him and he had to lash out in return. He was an angry Time Lord at this point in his very long life and sometimes he couldn't help himself. How Rose had stood him all that time was a mystery.

"Breaking his heart? Is that what it's come down to? You broke hers." They'd both broken hers. "How much do you know about him? How do you know you can trust him?" He hadn't known he could trust Rose when he'd first picked her up.. but then again, he hadn't trusted her. Ten clearly trusted this red-head, after only.. how long? "How do you know he's not playing you for a fool? To get to your TARDIS? To use you?"

Difficult to swallow your own medicine, wasn't it, Doctor? Because, this Doctor knew as well as the other that neither of them followed directions particularly well and neither were adept at giving them without them sounding more like orders than simple advice. Well, in this case Ten had meant it as an order, but that was beside the point. He was warning you, Nine. He was doing you the biggest favor in the universe. You had to know that. You'd seen the way he'd looked at her for crying out loud!

"It is what this has come down to," he yelled back. No doubt the whole museum would hear at this point, but it didn't matter.

"He knows he's not coming with me," he spat back. "He's the only bloody one who stopped me from ripping this place down! Kept me from falling in on myself! Kept me from turning back into you!" Oh, that was venom there. "So, don't you ask me how I can trust him. Don't you dare. Because even after I kick him he's still there. Who else can you say that for outside of Rose, Jack, and Sarah Jane? Anybody? Count them on one hand, the ones who are still around anyway." That last bit tapered away into sadness.

He wanted to dismiss you so very badly then, Nine.

Oh, that little outburst had certainly silenced him. For a few long seconds, anyway. He listened to the shouting, took in the statement about the Cajun having kept him from tearing this place apart. About keeping him from turning back into his earlier regeneration. That part had blue eyes sharpening into a harder look, but he kept himself silent for the time being. As Ten continued on about trust, and kicking him, and the people who were left.. the ones they could trust. And it just reminded him of how alone he really was. Jack. Could he trust Jack? Sure, he'd turned out to be a hero.. but now what was he? A fixed point. A renegade. What was he doing now, so far down the road? Could they trust someone who lived forever? Forever was a long time.. impossibly long.

Enough to drive you mad.

"So you keep kicking him. You keep hitting him. Keep saying and doing awful things until what? Until he hates you? It won't take much." Nine had no idea. None. He really didn't. "You should be more careful if you want him around next time you're close to turning into me." The last part was said more harshly. He realized you were trying to help him, Ten. He really did. But he just.. couldn't accept it the way it'd been given to him. He'd still do his best with Rose, still work to keep her, in his own fashion. But he couldn't take your commands. Not now, anyway.

And for a minute there Nine was quiet. There was nothing but the impossible beating of two hearts and a quick pace of his breaths to calm. Why was he so damned angry?

"Yes, until he hates me, Until he goes away. Until he gives up on this impossible thing he has set in his head," he was speaking much more quietly, sounding so much more reasonable. "Because, really, he can't keep at this forever and he deserves so much better." He swallowed hard. He knew what he had said was cruel. He knew he couldn't take it back, either.

"Just take care of her," he said quietly, turning around and placing his palms flat on the top of the desk. "That's all I want, you know that. I just want someone to keep her safe," and really, who more could he trust than himself?

It took a few more seconds as Nine processed what the other Doctor had said, but he eventually nodded his head, though his eyes never left the back of the suited man, focused there intently.

"I'll take care of her. I'll keep her safe. I always have. As much as we worry over her, she was the one who saved us.. more than once." She could take care of herself, most times, but they still always watched over her. And Nine knew, of course, that he'd lose her, but still..

He was turning, then, putting his back to Ten, who had his back to Nine, so he could face the closed door, hand coming out to reach for the handle before it dropped away, fingers never even grazing the cool metal. "When I first met you, all those years ago, I thought you were just like me, back then. And meeting you again, here, I've realized that you are just like me.. but not from back then. From now." You hadn't wanted to turn into him, Ten. But in too many ways, you were just like him. "I saw you those first few days, saw you avoid her, saw you with him, and I thought you were different. Thought you were happy. But I was wrong, wasn't I?"

He had seen it with his own eyes, but he'd been mistaken. He'd thought Ten had allowed himself to find happiness, but he hadn't. It was, of course, the exact opposite. He'd pushed it away, like Nine had-- No. Worse than Nine. He himself was quite sure he was incapable, he was different, he was off. But Ten.. he was capable, but he pushed it away. He refused it. Don't think Nine hadn't noticed.

"Good," he replied quietly. That was all he needed to hear; that she'd be safe and looked after. So what if they could count on both fingers and toes the number of times she'd saved them? Didn't mean she didn't need the timely rescue herself once in a while. No, sometimes she needed him, too.

He heard that pause where he'd anticipated hearing the door swing open and footsteps headed outside. Instead that voice started back up again.

This Doctor? He tried not to listen to that other one. He tried not to hear the truth in those words. That what he was doing was so very much like what he kept saying he didn't want to do. That he didn't want to be angry or destroy things. That he didn't want to be so hard that he was easy to break. He was so close again, wasn't he? So close to being back at the end of the Time War, when the only thing he knew how to do was operate alone. When what he'd wanted to do was be alone. When he couldn't even look at his own face.

"I'm avoiding her because I have to. I'm avoiding him because I have to. We always do what needs to be done." His tone was quiet as he talked to the top of that old, beaten desk.
