Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!complete, day 20, location: museum, remy lebeau, the doctor (nine), the doctor (ten)

Who: The Tenth Doctor, the Ninth Doctor & Remy LeBeau
Where: The Museum
When: Day 20, 7:15am
What:  Remy wakes up and is attacked by birds!
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete

After dropping the young Doctor off at the gym, Remy had decided to head back towards his barn, sniffling and sneezing the entire way there. The Doctor had been right, he'd spent the entire day in the rain the previous day, and now he had a cold. It was awful. So he'd laid around in his large bed in the barn for a while until the sun had gone down and he'd headed back over to the gym to glance in on the kids. After watching for a bit, he had finally decided to sleep in town tonight, instead of way out in his barn, so that when the others awoke, he'd know quickly if they were still children, or if they had returned to their normal state. So the red-head had staked out a place to sleep not too far away from the museum, and had settled down on a park bench on his back and had tipped his fedora low over his eyes to get some sleep.

Come morning, he had felt someone tugging at his sleeve.. then the tugging turned to pinching. And it was only when his hat was knocked away and tons of little hands were pinching him that he finally opened his eyes and realized that they weren't little hands at all-- they were beaks. Bird beaks. About fifteen of the dark animals were pecking at him, grabbing at his clothing, tearing his duplicate coat, biting through his clothes, causing his flesh to bleed. And as he sat up and started swatting them away with gloved hands, they got more vicious. They pecked at his face, sliced open his cheek, his lip, above his right eyebrow, all along his arms through his clothes, his jeans-- and all the red-head could do for the moment was break into a run to try and escape them, shouting curses in French and Lord knows what other languages. He just barely made it up the stairs, in his torn and ruined coat, before he forced open a door of the museum and stumbled inside, actually tripping on the doorstop and falling inside onto his knees, before he quickly spun around and threw up both gloved hands against that door and slammed it loudly closed, locking the birds out.

And locking everyone else in.

The Cajun was panting hard and was quickly pushing back up to his feet so that bloody hands (they'd pecked at his exposed fingers, the pinky and pointer on both hands) and had caused them to bleed) could flip the old lock on the door and hold it shut, then he leaned forward against it. He didn't know what was going on, but he certainly didn't like it. Not one bit. It was like a freaking Alfred Hitchcock movie!

"Perhaps you should have thought of those things before you got yourself involved with both of them. For the past few days she's been fawning over you like you were Captain Frockless Harkness." And he knew little about the Cajun, but was relatively sure the same thing was happening there. But one of them was going to have to take responsibility for it, and it wasn't going to be him.

"You made everything wrong, Doctor. I just ended up in the middle of your mess," What a strange thing to say to yourself. "I expect you to fix it. But if you're incapable, I'll handle Rose. And if you ever expect anything to be peaceful around here, you'll talk to that Cajun, because Rose bloody well hates him." A word the Doctor seldom if ever used. But there it was. He had reason to. "And wouldn't it be easier on the both of us if we could just throw her at someone we trusted?" Like Remy. But did that mean.. that Nine was implying he trusted the thief, as well? Perhaps, though it didn't seem likely.

"Jealousy doesn't suit you." Zing.

So what if she was fawning over him? He'd fawned over her from the moment he'd seen her here, even if he could hardly say a word at all. "She loves you. You can't see it right this minute because you'd too bloody blind. Well, take my word for it, she does. So, you take that and you go and do something with it so I won't have to." Yes, he intended that exactly as it sounded. "You will not be throwing her at anyone. You will not be tossing her off. You will show her the affection she bloody well deserves." He'd come up toe to toe with himself there. "Because we both know you don't get another chance at this."

"You stay away from Remy. He doesn't need handled or taken care of. He's the loyalest damned creature I've ever met and I won't have you punishing him for it." You'd managed to get him angry, Doctor. Good for you.

Then they'd managed to both get the other angry, because that bit about what he was going to do with Rose? That wasn't sitting well with the older (younger) looking Doctor. "No, I don't get another chance. But neither do you. Not with her." However, when he came to stand toe to toe with himself, the slightly taller Doctor lifted his chin to look down on himself.

"Stay away from Remy? You just chased him out of here, bleeding, back out into the assault of deadly birds. And you want me to stay away from him? It seems to me you're doing a fine enough job of torturing that loyal creature all on your own." You'd hurt him with the comment about Rose, Ten. And he was ready to return that favor.

"You'd better take it then," he said through clenched teeth. His expression wanted to hint at a smile, instead it was much darker. Didn't you realize what he was saying he'd do for you, Nine? He'd let his own chance go for you. He'd let her pass him by, for you. And then you turned around and threw your anger right back in his face.

"I didn't chase him anywhere," and he hadn't. All he'd done was ask him to go away. Didn't mean he had to go out into the birds. He could have taken the tunnels. Should have taken the tunnels. He knew the other was right, though. He knew he kept kicking the Cajun, and every time he did he felt worse for it. Though, he did it because he thought sooner or later he'd stop trying. Eventually he'd break him of that nasty habit of coming back. Then he'd be able to get back to the way he was. He could go back to being detached and busy and careless. He could focus on his work and not the people - leave the people to Rose and Sarah Jane and Jack. He could make the modulator and get them all back where they belonged.

He wouldn't have to worry about where Remy was. He wouldn't get upset when he saw Remy tortured on the screens. He wouldn't mind the fact that Nine was here kicking him for acting like a total git. No, none of it would matter because the Cajun would be completely out of his system.

"I mean it. Keep away. I won't have you breaking his heart."

Oh, he realized exactly what you were telling him, Doctor. And really, he appreciated it.. but as Ten well knew, it was the delivery of the words that had set him off. The way he had told him what to do, demanded that he do it. It simply didn't sit well with him and he had to lash out in return. He was an angry Time Lord at this point in his very long life and sometimes he couldn't help himself. How Rose had stood him all that time was a mystery.

"Breaking his heart? Is that what it's come down to? You broke hers." They'd both broken hers. "How much do you know about him? How do you know you can trust him?" He hadn't known he could trust Rose when he'd first picked her up.. but then again, he hadn't trusted her. Ten clearly trusted this red-head, after only.. how long? "How do you know he's not playing you for a fool? To get to your TARDIS? To use you?"

Difficult to swallow your own medicine, wasn't it, Doctor? Because, this Doctor knew as well as the other that neither of them followed directions particularly well and neither were adept at giving them without them sounding more like orders than simple advice. Well, in this case Ten had meant it as an order, but that was beside the point. He was warning you, Nine. He was doing you the biggest favor in the universe. You had to know that. You'd seen the way he'd looked at her for crying out loud!

"It is what this has come down to," he yelled back. No doubt the whole museum would hear at this point, but it didn't matter.

"He knows he's not coming with me," he spat back. "He's the only bloody one who stopped me from ripping this place down! Kept me from falling in on myself! Kept me from turning back into you!" Oh, that was venom there. "So, don't you ask me how I can trust him. Don't you dare. Because even after I kick him he's still there. Who else can you say that for outside of Rose, Jack, and Sarah Jane? Anybody? Count them on one hand, the ones who are still around anyway." That last bit tapered away into sadness.

He wanted to dismiss you so very badly then, Nine.

Oh, that little outburst had certainly silenced him. For a few long seconds, anyway. He listened to the shouting, took in the statement about the Cajun having kept him from tearing this place apart. About keeping him from turning back into his earlier regeneration. That part had blue eyes sharpening into a harder look, but he kept himself silent for the time being. As Ten continued on about trust, and kicking him, and the people who were left.. the ones they could trust. And it just reminded him of how alone he really was. Jack. Could he trust Jack? Sure, he'd turned out to be a hero.. but now what was he? A fixed point. A renegade. What was he doing now, so far down the road? Could they trust someone who lived forever? Forever was a long time.. impossibly long.

Enough to drive you mad.

"So you keep kicking him. You keep hitting him. Keep saying and doing awful things until what? Until he hates you? It won't take much." Nine had no idea. None. He really didn't. "You should be more careful if you want him around next time you're close to turning into me." The last part was said more harshly. He realized you were trying to help him, Ten. He really did. But he just.. couldn't accept it the way it'd been given to him. He'd still do his best with Rose, still work to keep her, in his own fashion. But he couldn't take your commands. Not now, anyway.

And for a minute there Nine was quiet. There was nothing but the impossible beating of two hearts and a quick pace of his breaths to calm. Why was he so damned angry?

"Yes, until he hates me, Until he goes away. Until he gives up on this impossible thing he has set in his head," he was speaking much more quietly, sounding so much more reasonable. "Because, really, he can't keep at this forever and he deserves so much better." He swallowed hard. He knew what he had said was cruel. He knew he couldn't take it back, either.

"Just take care of her," he said quietly, turning around and placing his palms flat on the top of the desk. "That's all I want, you know that. I just want someone to keep her safe," and really, who more could he trust than himself?

It took a few more seconds as Nine processed what the other Doctor had said, but he eventually nodded his head, though his eyes never left the back of the suited man, focused there intently.

"I'll take care of her. I'll keep her safe. I always have. As much as we worry over her, she was the one who saved us.. more than once." She could take care of herself, most times, but they still always watched over her. And Nine knew, of course, that he'd lose her, but still..

He was turning, then, putting his back to Ten, who had his back to Nine, so he could face the closed door, hand coming out to reach for the handle before it dropped away, fingers never even grazing the cool metal. "When I first met you, all those years ago, I thought you were just like me, back then. And meeting you again, here, I've realized that you are just like me.. but not from back then. From now." You hadn't wanted to turn into him, Ten. But in too many ways, you were just like him. "I saw you those first few days, saw you avoid her, saw you with him, and I thought you were different. Thought you were happy. But I was wrong, wasn't I?"

He had seen it with his own eyes, but he'd been mistaken. He'd thought Ten had allowed himself to find happiness, but he hadn't. It was, of course, the exact opposite. He'd pushed it away, like Nine had-- No. Worse than Nine. He himself was quite sure he was incapable, he was different, he was off. But Ten.. he was capable, but he pushed it away. He refused it. Don't think Nine hadn't noticed.

"Good," he replied quietly. That was all he needed to hear; that she'd be safe and looked after. So what if they could count on both fingers and toes the number of times she'd saved them? Didn't mean she didn't need the timely rescue herself once in a while. No, sometimes she needed him, too.

He heard that pause where he'd anticipated hearing the door swing open and footsteps headed outside. Instead that voice started back up again.

This Doctor? He tried not to listen to that other one. He tried not to hear the truth in those words. That what he was doing was so very much like what he kept saying he didn't want to do. That he didn't want to be angry or destroy things. That he didn't want to be so hard that he was easy to break. He was so close again, wasn't he? So close to being back at the end of the Time War, when the only thing he knew how to do was operate alone. When what he'd wanted to do was be alone. When he couldn't even look at his own face.

"I'm avoiding her because I have to. I'm avoiding him because I have to. We always do what needs to be done." His tone was quiet as he talked to the top of that old, beaten desk.

"No. You're avoiding her because you love her, but you can't have her because she's mine." He was almost a little possessive sounding when he'd said those words. Almost. He knew how drawn she was to this version of him, but also wasn't willing to give her up to him. He'd get his chance-- he'd had his chance. All good things came to an end. Even his time with the incredible Rose Tyler.

"So why are you avoiding him? I would avoid him because I knew I cared for him. Because I knew I didn't deserve him. Because I knew I was incapable of loving him." And after a short pause, he lifted his eyebrows. "What are your reasons?"

He wanted desperately to turn around, to give that other Time Lord a look that made people run at just the mention of it. You'd seen it once, you never wanted to see it again. It was fury and rage and cold. It was something he never wanted to hear from anyone's mouth. Nobody else deserved to say that he loved her. It brought back the hurt, again. The hurt at not being able to say it himself. The hurt at Remy LeBeau telling her on his behalf. The fact that those words now seemed so cheap. She'd never believe them now anyway. She wasn't ready to.

"I'm avoiding the pair of them because it's what's best for them. Because she's not even supposed to know I exist. Because for him I'm just going to disappear anyway. Better to leave him now than later." You both were so very good at leaving people. How many of those companions had found themselves in another place through will other than their own? How many had been dropped by the wayside? Could you even remember them all, Doctor?

He still hadn't turned around, but he'd managed to stand upright, sticking his hands in his pockets and closing his eyes up tight. "Let's just get everyone out of here," he said finally turning. "That's all that matters anyway."

"I thought I'd changed in that last regeneration. But I haven't, have I? Martyr." And he was exhaling a breath and shaking his head, not at Ten, but rather at himself. "I thought you were my chance to be happy, but you're not, are you?" However, that was the last thing he'd say of it. He was letting it go. For now. Don't get him started again, Ten.

"I'll take care of her. You take care of him." And that was how it should go.

"Oh, calling names doesn't suit you, Doctor. First jealousy now names? Starting to think we're more self loathing than I thought." Cheeky grin, couldn't help it.

"I'm plenty happy, outside this place. Have my TARDIS, travelling around with Donna. Quite happy, actually," he mused. He was happy. Very happy. He just wasn't happy here, in this place with the hand he'd been dealt. Couldn't fault someone for not being happy here, could you Nine? "Managed to meet the most curious woman just the other day," he was thinking of River Song, the woman who knew his name. "Love to tell you more about her..." Except he didn't know much more than that. Spoilers.

"He's not a dog, Doctor. He doesn't need me chasing after him and taking care of him. Not a plant, either."

Careful, Doctor. The more reckless Time Lord was already on edge. You'd set him off with those comments about Rose and now this? While he couldn't fault him for not being happy here, he could fault him for being.. well.. himself. For being what he was becoming, in this place. He had met him before, before this-- or perhaps it was after? He wasn't really sure. And that actually prompted a suddenly curious expression to come over his face and he leaned just a little, bending at the waist. Sorry, Doctor, you could continue your argument in a moment, once he'd puzzled this out.

"Have you met me? Like this. Not me, but.. another me. Have you run in to us yet?" Was that before or after this whole mess? And really, did it matter? This wasn't supposed to happen, they weren't supposed to be in this place, or Ten would remember it all, he'd remember being stuck here, know how they got out. And just as he asked, he realized that, shaking his head some as if to clear it.

"He's not a dog, nor a plant. Neither is she, but you're still asking me to chase after her, take care of her. What makes them so different, Doctor?" The thousand dollar question.

It appeared that Nine was finally reaching the same sort of conclusion that Ten had. "You and me? Like this? We haven't met before. I'd remember it. I don't." He tried to look serious. Tried so very hard to look serious about it. You know why he was cheeky about it, didn't you? It was because this was all outside of time. It was all new and brilliant (despite it's terrible nature) and that made it exciting. It wasn't that he enjoyed seeing people hurt or worse. It was that thrill of now knowing what might happen next. You felt it too, didn't you Nine?

"The only time I've met the Doctor like this was during that celery phase we went through. Comparatively the version in the leather jacket and the one with the Chucks were fashionistas. "We really are outside time, I think." Really, really outside time.

"Because she loves you." That, dear Doctor, was what was different. "She says so. Really says so one day."

Nine did feel it, he was realizing it, and he was slowly lifting his eyebrows. They were outside of time. This place.. would they even remember what happened when they left? No. They couldn't remember. If they did, Ten would know. Ten would remember. This place was.. impossible. When they left here, would it be like this had never happened at all? Would they forget everything? Would they remember it like it was a dream?

The Doctor was coming to that same point you were, Time Lord. And it showed on his face as he slowly began to smile, before that full-blown grin was settled there and he looked over at the older man expectantly. "You're right. Outside time, completely." And with this said, he was taking another look around the room, as if he was seeing it all for the first time.

Then blue eyes snapped back to brown. "She loves me." It was as much a question as it was a statement. "And he feels nothing for you?" Nine really had no idea what was going on between Ten and Remy. Perhaps, if he did, he might be able to better understand. But he didn't.

Well, look, the older Time Lord had lead the younger one to water and he was actually drinking. He was figuring it out. He was picking up on that very large present that Ten was trying to give him.

"She does," his own smile went wide. He, at least, had heard her say it to him, in that teary moment on the edge of Bad Wolf Bay. "She really does," perhaps not as much as she did then; well, he was never really sure when it all came together for her. Though, he was pretty sure that she'd loved that big eared man first. Wasn't a challenge really, just an observation. He wasn't competing with you, Nine; just thinking.

He'd dodge that question about Remy. It wasn't important.

"And that's why you've got to..." He didn't even bother trying to finish that statement. He'd let Nine finish it all on his own.

"She does." He repeated, pale eyes lighting up some as he did. But then it all came crashing down again and he looked away before looking back once again, trying to puzzle it out in his head before he spoke up again. "But I don't. I can't." He couldn't. But it didn't mean he didn't. It was confusing for him. He was so hard, so angry, so bitter.. there wasn't enough room in his heart for love. At least, that was what he believed. He loved her, yes, he knew he did.. but could he love her the way he was sure Ten loved her? No, he didn't think so. Eventually, she'd get the better Doctor, but for now..

Blue eyes lowered to his shoes, then up to the desk Ten was standing near once again. And it was tot hat desk that he asked his next question, mind so focused on Rose and his own problems that he no longer wanted to discuss them. Let him work them out and he'll get back to you. Five minutes.

"What does he feel for you?" Don't think he hadn't noticed that you'd dodged that question, Ten. It meant something was up. It meant there was more behind that story. More importantly: "What do you feel for him?"

"You do and you can," he responded more quitely. He knew what must be churning in the other Time Lord's stomach, he had been him once upon a time. He had felt those same feelings and knew what dared to stir in the back of his mind and the very bottom of his heart.

He wasn't better than you, Time Lord. When it came down to it, he was really just the same as you. Just a bit more pep in his step and a little bit more openness with his feelings. Though, have no fear those doors shuttered up pretty tightly once she was gone. They'd stayed latched, too, at least until very recently.

"Infatuation, perhaps, but we're used to that." Which didn't explain why he ran and pushed so hard, now did it. Didn't explain why he wanted to break that heart now to keep from really breaking it later. "Nothing," he said, looking those blues dead on. He could lie to himself, he was fairly good at that. "Like you said, you'll take care of her and I'll handle him." See how neatly it all came together for you, Nine?

He took those first words without a glance up, without a reaction, he just listened, he understood, and he filed it away. He'd think about it later, Doctor. Right now? He wanted to think about anything else. And guess what? You were there. You and your problems.

"It's not infatuation, we're used to that, we've had that, and never once have we run away so fast, fought so hard, or wanted so badly to keep someone like that from harm. That's what you're doing, isn't it? Chasing him away because you don't want to hurt him. Because he deserves better." Oh, he hadn't forgotten you'd said that. You could lie to him all you wanted, Doctor.. but you were smarter than that. And that was the hell of it, wasn't it? You were too smart to believe your own lies. "You wouldn't fight so hard if you felt nothing for him." Observed in that more quiet tone. "What do you feel for him?"

"Oh, it's infatuation. Hardly even knows me. Hasn't seen the TARDIS. Doesn't know anything," he dismissed Nine. "Maybe I'm just a kindler, gentler vesion of you." Maybe he was.

"I have a thing for not hurting people. It's sort of a habit, actually. Give them warnings and a chance when I can. So, that's what i'm doing for him. I'll keep him from getting hurt. I like people and he's a person after all. He's a person caught up in this place same as you and me. No sense letting him beat himself to bits." Oh, look, he'd rambled a lot there and said nothing at all. Masterful, actually. You talked enough and people couldn't really listen. Forget that he wasn't talking to just anyone for a moment, yes?

He didn't look away from Nine's piercing gaze. No, he'd take it and give it right back. "So, call it pity."

"Hasn't seen the TARDIS, so he's not using you for it. Doesn't know the worst or the best things about you, so he's unbiased. Yeah, it sounds like infatuation." Could you hear the sarcasm there, Time Lord? The more the denied things, the more you were letting on to the fact there was something more. The more you made him wonder.

The more you made him want the truth. If you were anyone else, he would have walked away by now.. but you were him and he needed to know. "It seems to me like you have a thing for not hurting people, but you have a thing for hurting him. Run out of ways to hurt yourself, Doctor?" Why else would he be acting that way with someone else? Nine hadn't actually seen it happen, but he'd seen the after effects twice now, on both sides, and he'd heard the way the Doctor was talking. Knew he was avoiding.

Knew he was lying.

"He isn't beating himself to bits. You are. That's not pity." Shot down, Ten. Try again.

Actually he knew the worst. The angry, terrible side. He knew the difficult and fierce bits. He knew that cruel manner he had with words when he was hurt. He knew that terrible look and the way he'd actually swat and hit when things became just too damned hard. Oh, he knew the worst. Yet, he still came back for more. He kept coming back like a cold. Kept sneaking up on him like a bloody stone angel. "Can't help that he's irrational."

Poker face in place, thank you. "Of course it's pity. I'm sorry that he makes me act that way toward him. I'm sorry that he's left me no choice at all. Completely irrational, actually. Totally stubborn and relentless. Won't listen to reason or logic. That's a terrible way to be, don't you think?"

He paused and finally looked away. "You have more important things to worry about than him, Doctor." And you did. Really.

"You're rambling, Doctor." It was a calm observation as he stared a few seconds longer, then nodded in agreement with the following statement. He did have more important things to worry about than Remy LeBeau. He had Rose Tyler. He had Sarah Jane. He had Jack Harkness. He had all the people inside this bubble and he had to get them all out. He had the people running this place.

And he had the older version of himself.

But he came last. He always came last. The younger Time Lord was turning then, taking those steps back to the door before he tugged it open, glancing over his shoulder once more at Ten. "What is he?" Questioned at last.
