Day 19, Morning
Who: Sam Winchester, Sarah Jane Smith and OTA
What: One lost kid
Where: The Museum
When: Day 19, Morning
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

The first thing that greeted Sam when he opened his eyes was a dirty ceiling. It didn't worry him, since Sam had woken up in lots of places before. Sometimes the ceilings were dirty, sometimes they weren't and sometimes it was the cool black metal top of the Impala overhead with the soft sound of the world passing by through the cracked window. What worried him was when he turned to the side to tell Dean to give him back some of the covers and he found that Dean wasn't there.

"Dean?" He asked, finding himself alone on a cold stone floor. Sam didn't recognize the room. He didn't recognize the clothes he was wearing either. "Dean!" He called out, getting to his feet and standing still to listen. This wasn't good. Where was Dean? Why was he alone? Where was he?

He moved to the door and pushed it open, a long unfamiliar corridor spreading out in front of him. Maybe this was a joke. A game. Was Dean going to jump out at him and try to scare him? He moved down the hall. "Dean, where are you?" He asked, his tone bordering on uncertain. "You can come out, I know you're there."

He paused again to listen for a sound, but heard nothing. He'd fallen asleep in a motel bed. Dad had been out and Dean had told him to go to bed even though he wanted to stay up and watch TV. It wasn't fair that Dean stayed up as late as he wanted and Sam always had to go to bed when the clock was a backward L. Maybe Dean was still mad that Sam had fought him on it. Maybe he'd put him here to teach him a lesson.

"Dean!"

Sarah Jane grinned as Sam described his father. She wished she'd been able to know her own father - what he'd been like, what his hobbies had been, all that. Not that she would have traded growing up in Aunt Lavinia's care for the world, but....

She squeezed Sam's hand in return, careful not to squeeze too hard. "There are so many rooms here, you know," she said as she led him down the corridor. "This is a museum. Well, it used to be. It's in need of some care." She stopped at the next door and repeated the process. This room had a few overturned display cabinets - likely places for a child to hide - but was just as empty as the last one.

"A museum?" Sam said, his eyes widening slightly. He'd heard about those. "Do they have dinosaurs here?" He asked, suddenly a little nervous. He had seen the skeletons in a picture book Dean had brought home from school one time. Dinosaurs looked a lot like monsters to him.

He looked into the dirty room, with overturned furniture. "Dean?" He called out. There was no answer. "Maybe he went out for some food," Sam said, frowning as they moved back out to the hall. "Sometimes he leaves to get breakfast if we're out of milk or cereal."

Sarah Jane nodded, then shook her head as he asked about dinosaurs. "If there are any, it's only bits of bone, not full skeletons," she said. "It's a bit run down, this museum, and in need of repair." Or razing to the ground, once they were all free of this place.

Dean left by himself to get food? Just, all on his own? She knew the brothers were independent, but at such a young age! She was rather disturbed by that fact. "Maybe," she said. "There is a store down the street a little ways. Would you like to look there?" she asked. "Maybe we'll meet him on the road." She really, really hoped they'd run into Dean. Although, that would raise more questions from both parties, but at least they'd have each other nearby. Sam shouldn't have to be without his brother at a time like this.

"Good," Sam said, sounding relieved. He wasn't going to admit to being scared of dinosaurs, but it was definitely good to know that there were only small pieces of them around if any at all. "It needs a handyman," Sam said with a nod. "My dad is a handyman, sometimes."

He looked up at Sarah Jane as she asked whether or not he wanted to go to the street down the road. He looking down thoughtfully, almost hearing his father telling him to stay put, that he and Dean would find him, but the situation was beginning to scare him and Sarah Jane was trying to help. "Yes," he said after pausing for a moment. "I hope so," he said, looking back up at her in response to her saying they might run into Dean on the road. His face brightened momentarially. "Do you think he got some Lucky Charms?"

"It needs a whole team of handymen," Sarah Jane agreed, nodding in reply. She was glad Sam didn't seem too worried as of yet. Hopefully they'd find his brother before too long, and sort out what to do.

"Let's make sure to keep our eyes peeled, then," she said as she led Sam toward the main doors of the museum. "It's not too far to the shop." She smiled when he asked about the cereal, but there was a hint of sadness in it, since she had no idea whether there would even be food suitable for a child at the shop when they got there. Hopefully there would be something, at least. "We'll have to wait and see," she told him.

She pulled out her journal as she helped Sam down the steps and out toward the empty road. Best to keep an eye on things that way as well, since she knew she wasn't the only one who'd stumbled upon a younger version of a neighbor.
