Day 19, Morning
Who: Sam Winchester, Sarah Jane Smith and OTA
What: One lost kid
Where: The Museum
When: Day 19, Morning
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

The first thing that greeted Sam when he opened his eyes was a dirty ceiling. It didn't worry him, since Sam had woken up in lots of places before. Sometimes the ceilings were dirty, sometimes they weren't and sometimes it was the cool black metal top of the Impala overhead with the soft sound of the world passing by through the cracked window. What worried him was when he turned to the side to tell Dean to give him back some of the covers and he found that Dean wasn't there.

"Dean?" He asked, finding himself alone on a cold stone floor. Sam didn't recognize the room. He didn't recognize the clothes he was wearing either. "Dean!" He called out, getting to his feet and standing still to listen. This wasn't good. Where was Dean? Why was he alone? Where was he?

He moved to the door and pushed it open, a long unfamiliar corridor spreading out in front of him. Maybe this was a joke. A game. Was Dean going to jump out at him and try to scare him? He moved down the hall. "Dean, where are you?" He asked, his tone bordering on uncertain. "You can come out, I know you're there."

He paused again to listen for a sound, but heard nothing. He'd fallen asleep in a motel bed. Dad had been out and Dean had told him to go to bed even though he wanted to stay up and watch TV. It wasn't fair that Dean stayed up as late as he wanted and Sam always had to go to bed when the clock was a backward L. Maybe Dean was still mad that Sam had fought him on it. Maybe he'd put him here to teach him a lesson.

"Dean!"

Sarah Jane looked up from her journal upon hearing the small boy's voice. She wasn't sure who the Management had meant so far, in terms of someone she knew, but there was someone here who needed help and looking after. Perhaps it was this boy they'd meant, perhaps not. All Sarah knew was that the boy sounded a little nervous.

Tucking her journal into the pocket of her jacket, she hauled herself up from her makeshift bed and slipped into the hallway. It didn't take her long to find the boy; he was just round the corner from the room she'd claimed as hers. She crouched down, not wanting to seem intimidating to him, whoever he was, and forced herself to put on her friendliest smile. However upset she was at the Management for bringing children here, she couldn't show it to the boy.

"Hello," she said, hoping she wouldn't startle him too much. "Are you looking for someone?"

Sam stilled as a woman appeared from around the corner. He didn't recognize her. She lowered herself beside him and he stared at her, not sure whether the rule of never ever talking to strangers applied in this particular situation when he'd woken up in a strange place.

She smiled at him, but it did little to dissipate the worried look on his face. There was something wrong. Even if Dean was being a jerk he would've shown himself by now. Dean knew when Sam was scared almost before Sam did and right now he was fast approaching that emotion.

"Yes," Sam said, taking a step back. He looked at the ground, remembering the manners that had been drilled into him. "Yes, ma'm. My brother, Dean." He looked back up at the woman, a hopeful look on his face. "Do you know where he is?"

Sarah Jane looked closely at the boy. Something about his face was very familiar. It set the hairs on the back of her neck rising, but she kept her expression friendly, not wanting to frighten him. "You're the only one I've seen this morning," she said, keeping her tone light. "Would you like me to help you find him?"

She kept her kindest smile on her face, even though her mind was racing to try and figure out why there would be children here. "My name is Sarah Jane," she said. She held out her hand, careful not to move too quickly. The little boy seemed very nervous, and she couldn't blame him. "What's yours?"

Fear started seeping into Sam's brain when Sarah said he was the only one she'd seen that morning. Where was Dean? She asked if he wanted her help and Sam nodded quickly. "Yes."

She had a nice smile and even though Sam wanted to smile back he couldn't. A concentrated frown was in place as he reached out to slip his hand in her bigger one. He wasn't supposed to talk to strangers, but she was an adult. She could help, couldn't she? When they found Dean he would tell him if it was okay or not. He would tell him what to do and why he wasn't there.

"Sam," he said quietly, looking up at her.

Sam...Sam! Sarah Jane's eyes widened for just a moment before she was able to school her expression back into one of a more relaxed, friendly nature. "Good to meet you, Sam," she said, squeezing his hand. Now that he'd said it, she could see the similarities between the child and the man she'd met a few days ago. How it had happened, she had no idea, but she knew, she just knew it was the same person. Management had turned him into a child.

And suddenly, their little clue clicked in her head. She knew exactly whom they'd meant now. Who else could they mean, if this was how the children existed here today? No. Focus on the present, Sarah Jane. You could find him later. Right now, you had a little boy depending on you for help.

"Have you got all your things, Sam?" she asked as she stood up again, trying not to wince at the pain in her lower back as she did so. "Don't want to lose them on our hunt, right?" She felt her own pocket for her journal as she said this. Today, more than any day, they'd need to keep in contact. "Now, when you and Dean play hide-and-seek, where does he usually like to hide?"

Sam was watching Sarah Jane closely, part of him afraid that he might be doing something very wrong by going off with a stranger. How many times had his dad told him to never leave Dean's side? Still, he had to find them somehow and he couldn't do it on his own. He didn't even know where he was. He'd never seen the walls or the ratty pictures that hung on them before.

Sam frowned. "I don't have any things," he said, though even as he said it, he was aware of something uncomfortable at his back. He let go of Sarah Jane's hand for a moment to pull out a journal tucked in the back of his pants. His brow furrowed as he looked at it. "I have a book in my pants," he amended, opening it up to a blank page. "Is it a drawing book?" He asked, looking back up at Sarah Jane. "I like to draw."

His ears perked up at the word hunt. "My dad's a hunter," he said quickly. His brow furrowed when she asked where Dean liked to hide. "Usually behind the shower curtain." Or he used to. They hadn't played hide-and-seek in a while. The last time Dean had jumped out at Sam he'd scared him badly enough that Sam had lost his balance and slipped hitting his head on the corner of the cabinet on the way down. Sam hadn't even had time to cry before Dean had been there telling him he was okay. The look of worry on Dean's face had scared him more than anything else ever had though and it wasn't long before he'd been crying uncontrollably, more scared than hurt. Ever since then Dean hadn't wanted to play hide-and-seek anymore.

If Sarah had any doubts as to who the boy was, they were erased when he produced his journal. "It's a special journal," she explained. "You write things in there, and then other people who have special journals can read them and write back to you. You can draw in it as well." She smiled. "What sorts of things do you like to draw?"

Well, since there were no showers here, a shower curtain would be a bit tricky to find. The best thing to do would be to start in the Museum and work their way out, she figured. And keep an eye on her own journal, in case there were more children about. "A hunter? What does he hunt? Deer or foxes?" She looked down the corridor. "Come on, you can tell me about it while we look for Dean." She gave Sam a very gentle nudge down the corridor. She remembered seeing his name on the lists of captives, so she held out hope they'd find him quickly and he'd be able to help Sam.

Sam raised his eyebrows in surprise at Sarah's explanation of the journal. "Cool," he said, smiling down at the book, his eyes lighting up momentarily. Wait until he told Dean about that. "Stuff," Sam said, giving a small shrug. "I can draw a tree and a car and my dad and brother and...other stuff too."

Her question about what his dad hunted threw him off for a moment. He'd never actually thought about it before. He just knew his dad had a lot of guns he wasn't allowed to touch and that he left a lot because he had to go hunting. Something about the question made him feel uncomfortable. He felt like maybe he should know what his dad hunted all the time. It's just never seemed that important before.

He reached out and took Sarah Jane's hand again as she gave him a gentle nudge and thought of the biggest thing he could. "He hunts hippos," he said matter of factly. "And...elephants. Big ones. He never brings them home because they won't fit through the door."

At last, he seemed to have cheered up a bit. That brought a more genuine smile to Sarah's face. She didn't want Sam to be sad and gloomy all day. Children shouldn't be sad and gloomy, after all. She nodded as he described the types of things he drew. "I'd like to see them later, if it's all right," she said, hoping to keep his spirits up.

As they started walking, Sarah's eyes grew wide. "Hippos and elephants?" she echoed, amused by his declaration. "He must be very brave. Hippos are very dangerous animals, you know." They came to the first open door along the corridor, and Sarah Jane paused at the doorway. "Anybody home?" she called, making a show of scanning the room, even though it was very obviously empty. She tried to think back to when she was a teenager and had made pocket money minding the neighbors' children, and the types of games she'd played with them. She glanced down at Sam. "Shall we try the next one?" she asked after a moment.

"Okay," Sam said, when Sarah Jane said she might want to see his drawings later. He would have to draw some different things for her. She was being nice helping him find Dean after all. He wondered if maybe his dad was here too. Maybe he'd come back in the middle of the night when Sam had been asleep and they'd moved again.

"He is brave!" Sam said enthusiastically. "He's the bravest hunter ever. Dean said so. Dean says our dad is awesome!" He looked up at Sarah Jane. "And he is."

Sam looked into the room, but he didn't see anyone there. The excitement he'd felt a moment earlier about his dad faded some and his smile fell. "Hello?" He called out into the emptiness afraid he was missing something. There was nothing there.

"Yes, please," he said when Sarah asked if they should try the next one. He squeezed her hand as they walked down the corridor, glad that he wasn't in this creepy place alone.

Sarah Jane grinned as Sam described his father. She wished she'd been able to know her own father - what he'd been like, what his hobbies had been, all that. Not that she would have traded growing up in Aunt Lavinia's care for the world, but....

She squeezed Sam's hand in return, careful not to squeeze too hard. "There are so many rooms here, you know," she said as she led him down the corridor. "This is a museum. Well, it used to be. It's in need of some care." She stopped at the next door and repeated the process. This room had a few overturned display cabinets - likely places for a child to hide - but was just as empty as the last one.

"A museum?" Sam said, his eyes widening slightly. He'd heard about those. "Do they have dinosaurs here?" He asked, suddenly a little nervous. He had seen the skeletons in a picture book Dean had brought home from school one time. Dinosaurs looked a lot like monsters to him.

He looked into the dirty room, with overturned furniture. "Dean?" He called out. There was no answer. "Maybe he went out for some food," Sam said, frowning as they moved back out to the hall. "Sometimes he leaves to get breakfast if we're out of milk or cereal."

Sarah Jane nodded, then shook her head as he asked about dinosaurs. "If there are any, it's only bits of bone, not full skeletons," she said. "It's a bit run down, this museum, and in need of repair." Or razing to the ground, once they were all free of this place.

Dean left by himself to get food? Just, all on his own? She knew the brothers were independent, but at such a young age! She was rather disturbed by that fact. "Maybe," she said. "There is a store down the street a little ways. Would you like to look there?" she asked. "Maybe we'll meet him on the road." She really, really hoped they'd run into Dean. Although, that would raise more questions from both parties, but at least they'd have each other nearby. Sam shouldn't have to be without his brother at a time like this.

"Good," Sam said, sounding relieved. He wasn't going to admit to being scared of dinosaurs, but it was definitely good to know that there were only small pieces of them around if any at all. "It needs a handyman," Sam said with a nod. "My dad is a handyman, sometimes."

He looked up at Sarah Jane as she asked whether or not he wanted to go to the street down the road. He looking down thoughtfully, almost hearing his father telling him to stay put, that he and Dean would find him, but the situation was beginning to scare him and Sarah Jane was trying to help. "Yes," he said after pausing for a moment. "I hope so," he said, looking back up at her in response to her saying they might run into Dean on the road. His face brightened momentarially. "Do you think he got some Lucky Charms?"

"It needs a whole team of handymen," Sarah Jane agreed, nodding in reply. She was glad Sam didn't seem too worried as of yet. Hopefully they'd find his brother before too long, and sort out what to do.

"Let's make sure to keep our eyes peeled, then," she said as she led Sam toward the main doors of the museum. "It's not too far to the shop." She smiled when he asked about the cereal, but there was a hint of sadness in it, since she had no idea whether there would even be food suitable for a child at the shop when they got there. Hopefully there would be something, at least. "We'll have to wait and see," she told him.

She pulled out her journal as she helped Sam down the steps and out toward the empty road. Best to keep an eye on things that way as well, since she knew she wasn't the only one who'd stumbled upon a younger version of a neighbor.
