Who: Rose Tyler and Ianto Jones
What: A late night chat
When: Day 18, 11pm
Where: The museum
Rating: If Jack gets mentioned (and he will), PG-13
Status: Active

To say Rose Tyler was mentally exhausted might be a bit of an understatement. Her whole body hurt she was so tired of thinking. Thinking about Remy and his cryptic words, or Dr. John Smith and the fact that he knew her but she didn't know him. She was thinking constantly about her conversation with the Doctor and the bits and pieces and revelations she'd been able to glean off of him.

And all that thinking was making a girl who wasn't quite yet twenty very, very ill.

She couldn't sleep. She could try all she wanted, but her mind was racing and her stomach was churning. Must've been that hardy dinner of a whole granola bar. Though the young woman wasn't prone to panic attacks, she couldn't help the claustrophobic feeling gaining on her. And it was with that nearly terrified feeling that she slid out of the room as quietly as she could manage, walked through the halls of the museum, and planted herself near a window. She didn't trust herself to go outside; this place was crawling with people at night, it seemed, and she didn't have the energy to deal with being snatched just yet. When she was sleeping, sure, why not? Never mind what all the sleep-inducing drugs were probably doing to their systems. But an awake but barely functioning Rose stood no chance against The Powers That Be.

Pulling her mostly dry jacket more tightly around her, she curled up into a ball on the floor of the museum, trying to listen for the sounds of the outside. It was almost unnatural how quiet it could be. In the distance, she heard one of her fellow castaways snort in their sleep and she suppressed a weary smile. This had the potential for a long night.

Rose didn't even try to hide the undignified snort that came out when she started laughing. "You've been hanging around Jack too long," she told him with as stern an expression as she could manage. Hearing Jack's idea of 'adventure' would probably ruin Ianto's mind for good. And make Rose's actual adventures pale in comparison. "Never. He was really old when we met him. He died the next year, actually, though I certainly hope the two things aren't related!" No, Adam was the closest she'd come to being romatically involved in any of their travels. Or...well, Jack. But she wasn't about to say that in front of his current partner! It'd be a bit like one of those afternoon talk shows her mum sometimes had on while working.

"You have a pet...what?" she blurted. Okay, that was new to her. And really, why? She should demand a trip to see dinosaurs. Or then again, maybe not. It was the Doctor, after all. He'd probably have them running from a Tyrannosaurus before it was all said and done. "It sounds incredible, honestly. Jack as a leader? You know, I was earthbound before I ended up here. It's kind of nice knowing there's alternatives."

Instead of going charging off into the TARDIS' very heart, which is what she'd actually end up doing once all was said and done. Ah, well. It couldn't be said that Rose wasn't impulsive.

"Yeah, well. After hearing these stories for so long your mind sort of goes along some well established paths. Sorry." So his mind leaped towards certain ideas when he heard traveling stories. Sue him. Better yet, blame Jack. It was easier.

"We've got a pet pterodactyl. I, um. She came through the rift one fine day and I used her to secure a job with Torchwood three." The rest of the circumstances were conveniently shoved under the proverbial bed. Rose didn't need to hear about his betrayals and failures.

"That sounds fascinating," Rose admitted, and she wasn't trying to sound sarcastic or annoyed or anything. She really meant it. "Dinosaurs aren't something I've messed around with yet. She really lives there?" The idea was appealing, actually. Well, so long as she didn't fly around attempting to eat them all. That could be potentially problematic. Or just plain bad.

She leaned back again, scooting so she was at the wall and leaning against it. "What's up with this rift? I've heard it mentioned a time or two, but no details ever get mentioned. I assume it has to do with time, right? If it's dragging in dinosaurs?"

"It's.. Yeah, she lives there. She's got a nest in the wall. Um. Tends to eat sheep when she gets let out." Ianto sounded very sheepish (ha!) at that. Even rubbed the back of his head in a very boyish fashion over it. "I .. sort of named her Myfanwy. But it isn't official or anything."

At mention of the rift, Ianto straightened a little, then thought better of it and hunched so he could wrap himself up in the blanket. He was sort of wishing for Jack's coat about now. "It's a rift in time and space. Mainly, we get the flotsam and jetsam of the universe tossed at us. From any where and any when. Sometimes it takes people or things but not often." Though, even once was too often for Ianto's taste. He grew sober thinking abut Flat Holm.

Well if anything, that got her attention. Rose sat straight up then, looking Ianto directly in his sheepish but rather beautiful eyes. Jack always did have good taste. "You're kidding?" she blurted, shock and amazement flickering over her face. "It takes people? From like...your time? Or other times? Or both? Do they just show up there at the rift or do they sort of...float?"

If nothing else could be said for Rose's travels with the Doctor, it had certainly refined her ability to ask questions. More often than not, the right questions, too.

"Both," Ianto said with a little lift of his eyebrows. "It's usually not people, though. Just junk. We've a whole archive full of rift junk." But what could they do about it? This was with the rift closed and scarred over, too. Years and years worth of stuff and people, coming and going. Since they opened the rift up again...? It was probably worse.

It didn't help Ianto much to know that it was partially his fault that the rift got opened again. This was something he never intended to tell Rose, gossipping or not. He still felt guilt over that betrayal. Reflexively, Ianto glanced towards the room Jack had claimed for theirs and frowned.

Rose saw his backward glance and looked at him worriedly. Again, everything seemed to lead back to Jack. It had to be hard to be Jack sometimes. No, most of the time. And then to be the bloke in love with him? Well, Rose had to feel sort of bad for Ianto, really.

"That's incredible," Rose admitted, dropping her head into her hands. Then she stifled a yawn. Ianto was looking a bit down, she was looking a bit exhausted, why had she kept him up so late? "Oh, for pity's sake, look at us. Gossiping like a couple of school kids." She reluctantly pulled herself to her feet, wondering just how hard it was going to be to sneak an edge of sheet from Remus. Or better still, what the Doctor's expression would be if she just stole his! "You ought to be getting into bed, Jack'll have my head if you start walking around looking like I beat you for keeping you up all night."
