Who: Rose Tyler and Ianto Jones
What: A late night chat
When: Day 18, 11pm
Where: The museum
Rating: If Jack gets mentioned (and he will), PG-13
Status: Active

To say Rose Tyler was mentally exhausted might be a bit of an understatement. Her whole body hurt she was so tired of thinking. Thinking about Remy and his cryptic words, or Dr. John Smith and the fact that he knew her but she didn't know him. She was thinking constantly about her conversation with the Doctor and the bits and pieces and revelations she'd been able to glean off of him.

And all that thinking was making a girl who wasn't quite yet twenty very, very ill.

She couldn't sleep. She could try all she wanted, but her mind was racing and her stomach was churning. Must've been that hardy dinner of a whole granola bar. Though the young woman wasn't prone to panic attacks, she couldn't help the claustrophobic feeling gaining on her. And it was with that nearly terrified feeling that she slid out of the room as quietly as she could manage, walked through the halls of the museum, and planted herself near a window. She didn't trust herself to go outside; this place was crawling with people at night, it seemed, and she didn't have the energy to deal with being snatched just yet. When she was sleeping, sure, why not? Never mind what all the sleep-inducing drugs were probably doing to their systems. But an awake but barely functioning Rose stood no chance against The Powers That Be.

Pulling her mostly dry jacket more tightly around her, she curled up into a ball on the floor of the museum, trying to listen for the sounds of the outside. It was almost unnatural how quiet it could be. In the distance, she heard one of her fellow castaways snort in their sleep and she suppressed a weary smile. This had the potential for a long night.

The snort might have been Jack, because not too long after it sounded Ianto was wandering the halls, barefoot and wrapped in a blanket. He had his trousers on and his shirt under said blanket, but then he wasn't an exhibitionist like the good Captain.

Yawning, just a little, he pattered through, then paused and squinted towards a lump that looked a little like a person. After a moment, he decided that it must be a person. He couldn't tell who, exactly, in the dark. "Alright, then?" he called and pattered closer, picking up his feet quickly, since the floor was chilly.

Rose glanced behind her, giving a smile when she recognized the Welsh voice of a certain Captain's favourite solider. "Just me," she called, reassuring him. Considering where they were, he could attack at any moment. Lord knows, she wouldn't blame him. Half the time, she wanted to attack anyone who crossed her path in this place.

"You okay? You're up awfully late." Yeah, right. She was one to talk. "Jack snores, doesn't he? Knew it, knew it all along." She giggled, but the sound was weak with the fatigue of the day. Glancing him over, she gave him a grin. "But hey, look at you, alive and all. Glad to see it."

Ah, Rose. Part of him was hoping that it was Shannon, since she still hadn't turned up, but he couldn't say that he wasn't pleased to finally be meeting Rose. Even if it was in circumstances like this one. Ianto settled down next to her, then drew long legs in so he could tuck the blanket around them. "He does, but he doesn't believe it. Then again, I didn't believe that I snored until he recorded it and played it back to me."

He grinned a bit at the whole alive comment and shrugged his shoulders. It's not like he fought through the day to stay alive, just through Remy's cooking. And Sarah Jane wasn't affected by it, so he reckoned he wasn't in danger at all. "Alive and all and holding up alright. Are you holding up alright?"

Three days and she hadn't really gotten a chance to talk to Ianto yet. True, one of those days he'd been playing captive to the folks running the place, and the majority of that day, Rose had been running around in emotion-filled circles. But it was nice getting to actually talk to him one-on-one instead of just eyeing him from the groups of people around her.

"Record him! Of course, he'll just say you're playing back the recording he made of you. I think you'd need video proof. Or an out of body experience." He'd denied it when he slept on the TARDIS, too, but Rose had always suspected. Knowing she was right felt pretty good, actually.

"Oh, I'm fine. We were worried about you lot, though. Jack was a mess, but don't tell him I said a word, I'll deny it." In truth, she was more worried about the fact that Jack wasn't showing as much emotion as she thought he would. He'd needed it, really.

Well, to be fair, things had been a bit on the insane side the past three days. Experiments and rushing about and general chaos made it difficult to actually sit down and chat. And from what he understood, Rose had a lot going on. From what he gleaned from the Doctor(s) and from Jack and Sarah Jane.

Ianto fussed with his toes as they sat there, toying with them to try to warm them up. It probably made him look quite a bit like his proper age instead of older and more worldly. "I think he'd suspect that I doctored the footage. Which I may have to play a prank, I'll be honest." Just thinking about it made Ianto grin.

At the last, though, Ianto turned back to look towards their rooms. "He'll deny it, too. But .. it helps to know that he has you lot. I hope he didn't drive you absolutely barmy."

Honestly, Rose liked him a lot better looking the age he actually was, even if he was sleeping with a bloke twice his age (as far as she knew, anyway). He was much more approachable this way, bundled up for sleep, looking nearly like a kid. "Oh, when you two get back you'll have to doctor some footage then. Have any editing skills? Make him look like he assaulted one of those weevils in his sleep? Beautiful."

She giggled, unfolding her legs and pointing them out in front of her. "Jack always drives me barmy. It's what he does. I think he's chosen it as a secondary career path." For a moment, though, she studied the dark-haired man in the moonlight, smiling to herself. "He really cares about you. I hope you know that. I'm sure he's hardly open with it, but... He wasn't the same when he thought you were gone. Walked around looking like he had to be all tough, but...no." Her tone had grown serious as she confessed what she thought to him. Jack would skin her, probably, but that was just too bad. Right now? She'd kill to know someone looked at her the way Jack looked at his Welshman.

"What, Drive Rose Barmy as a course in Uni? Oh, Hi, I'm Captain Jack Harkness. I save the universe, but that's my hobby. My job's driving this wonderful girl up the wall." Ianto snorted, but it was mostly in amusement. He missed bantering back and forth with people like this. There wasn't enough of that here.

The smile remained fixed on his face, though, through Rose's casual spillage of Jack's heart. He did duck his head a bit and his ears flushed. "I .. I can imagine," he mumbled, sheepishly. "He doesn't say anything, but I know. I know he cares a huge deal about you, too. You can tell because he never talks about the ones he really loves. Just the ones that were fun times." Ridiculous times, if some of the stories were to be believed.

"Ah, yes, Jack stories," she said with a wink that could probably barely be seen in the moonlight. "Has he ever told you the one where he was almost executed and then woke up the next morning with his jailers? Both of them?" Rose giggled and leaned over, playing with the ends of her hair. "Honestly, you ought to know by now to take everything he says with a grain of salt. Honestly, he's better now than he used to be!"

Oh, yeah. Jack was going to have her head. But really, she was doing it in his favour, not against. "How much do you know about...you know. Past Jack?" Rose had plenty of time to figure out that Jack had come from a point far ahead of her own. He was being secretive though; he was hiding something that kept her from knowing exactly how far ahead and what he'd done inbetween.

"Oh, that's a new one. Have you heard the one about the boyfriend with no mouth? Surprisingly creative." Ianto grinned and leaned towards Rose as well, then offered her a bit of his blanket. May has well share the warmth, right? It'd keep the both of them comfortable.

"I'll take your word on the fact that he's better. I haven't really known Jack that long. A couple of years at the most. All I really know is that he's from the fifty first century and Jack Harkness isn't his real name. But that's all, really." Ianto wasn't certain just how far the tales of Jack's immortality had circulated and he didn't want to give anything away if Rose didn't know. It was Jack's tale to tell, wasn't it?

"No mouth? However did he survive?" Rose asked with a giggle, accepting the offered blanket and warming her feet with it. He was terribly resourceful, really. There she'd been in such a hurry to get out and get some time away that she hadn't even thought to bring anything. Well, that and she shared her sheet with a sixteen year-old and maternal instinct told her that he needed it far more than she did.

She lifted her eyebrows at Ianto's tale. Good thing he hadn't revealed Jack's immortality, but what he'd told her was already more than she had to go on. "So it's not his real name. Always wondered, what sort of alien species names their kid Jack? If we're still naming kids Jack three hundred years from now..." Wrinkling her nose, she shook her head but grinned.

"He was pretty shady when I met him," she remarked casually. It was already unspokenly assumed that she'd met him first. "Still the flirt he is now, don't get me wrong," she grinned, touching Ianto's arm with a laugh, "but definitely different. I credit at least part of that to you." Rose had no way of knowing the hundreds of years Jack had spent living among humanity before he'd even met Ianto. But the spark in his eye and the quirk of his mouth? That was purely Ianto, that much she was sure of.

"Well," Ianto said, lowering his voice to a soft little whisper. "I didn't tell you a bloody thing, but since he does think so highly of you, I do know that his brother's name was Grey. Which .. really is bland. I was theorizing that Jack's real name is Beige, which, really, makes Jack a vast improvement." Resourceful? Nah. Ianto was just chilled and unwilling to leave Jack the Furnace with all the blankets. So, naturally, one went with him in his nocturnal wanderings.

Ianto dropped an exaggerated wink and chuckled softly, shrugging just a bit. "Honestly, less of what you see about Jack is due to me. Almost none of it is me, actually. The coffee obsession is me." That's about all, really. Though, he did know that Jack had been a right bastard at one point. ..he still could be a right bastard, actually. "He did miss you, though. Quite a bit."

An unattractive snort escaped her as she giggled at the thought of Jack's real name being Beige. "I suppose Beige would still be better than Chartreuse or Aqua. No wonder he changed it on Earth, no one would let him hear the end of it." Ianto knew about Jack's brother. In all their time together, Jack had never mentioned a brother. Captain, you really were a man of many mysteries, weren't you?

"Well, he does speak highly of your coffee," she said with a giggle. "And...erm, other things." Despite turning bright pink, she was giggling still. How could Ianto tolerate a man who ran around bragging about that? She had no idea. "I suppose most of the credit goes to the Doctor." And her. Though she'd never admit to it. With love and adventure, they'd helped turn the Con Man into a hero. Like it or not. "He risked his life more than once for us. A talent, I hear, he's carried on still." Her smile was wistful, knowing Jack had missed her. What had become of them? Why had they been separated?

Rose should take heart. The only reason Ianto knew about Jack's brother was because Jack's brother had tried to kill him. Repeatedly. That had been a very bad day. Otherwise, he was certain that he would have never heard a peep about Jack's family.

Mock indignation ran rampant across Ianto's face. "He tells people about my other things? I'm hoping that those other things are clerical skills or fire arms skills and not .. um. Other things." He stilled, though, at the mention of the Doctor and pursed his lips. It was fairly clear that he didn't much care for the Doctor at the moment, though he tried not to let it show in day to day goings on. "He does. Constantly. Risk his life, that is. It .. destroys him to lose people."

Not people, Ianto. Rose. Those two shared secrets like girlfriends half the time, especially of the romantic variety. Surely you didn't think the tales of Jack's adventures stopped after he met you! "Your driving skills," Rose said, trying to look as serious as she could manage without bursting into giggles again. "Oh, and you place a mean pizza order." Well...who didn't? It had to be a good guess!

"He's a good man," Rose told him, wiggling her toes a bit to get some feeling back in them. "And you must know, if you hurt him, I'll have to off you. I don't look forward to it, please don't make me. I'm not much for blood so I'd have to smother you in your sleep." She shot him an angelically innocent look and laughed a little, but she did mean it. Sort of. She wouldn't kill him. But if anyone hurt Jack after everything he'd already been through? She'd rip them apart, if only verbally.

Oh, that. Ianto snorted and looked away, smiling a little. "I'm told I'm a terror on the road." Which, he figured, is how you had to drive to get anywhere quickly in an emergency. He couldn't understand why people complained. They got there in one piece, didn't they? Well. Mainly one piece.

Ianto shook his head, just a bit, and glanced back at Rose, embarrassed and smiling still. "I ... try not to hurt him. He's a good deal of everything to me." Very embarrassed now, to have admitted that. Ianto's head ducked and his ears flamed red, but it was dark and the flush was hidden. He hasn't ever admitted that to anyone. Not even to Jack.

"If you don't mind, I think I'm going to change the subject now, please?"

Rose leaned back on her hands with a smirk, eyeing him. Oh, he was adorable. Jack had done well picking this one. Not that he needed her approval, of course, but if he asked it? She'd have given it. This bloke loved her sweet hero, the one who'd kissed her goodbye on Satellite 5 and told she was worth fighting for. She knew in her heart it could never be her. Whatever had happened between her time and his had created a gap, one she could never hope to step over. So if it had to be someone else? Ianto was a perfectly good choice.

Tucking her hair behind her ears, she leaned back again and surveyed him with an interested look. "All right, then," she said with a wide grin. "Have it your way. What is it we're changing the subject to, hmm? World peace? Intergalactic peace, maybe, that's always a good one." She giggled, then, at her own effort to remind him that his interplanetary explorations weren't his alone. "Latest episode of EastEnders? I know you'd have to be far ahead of me, I'm not even caught up on the latest where I'm from. Is it still going, I wonder?"

Oh, but Ianto wasn't in love with the hero. He was in love with the idiot underneathe. Which was an amazing thing, really, if he stopped to think about it. He rarely did. It was a frightening thing to think about.

Anyway.

"I'd rather go on about EastEnders than intergalactic peace, you know. I honestly haven't left the planet before. Well. Ever. If this is still Earth. If it isn't, it's a pretty rubbish way for me to start my interstellar travels." Oh, he wanted to see the stars, but understood that he probably would never get a chance to do it. All those things he heard about from Jack and the Doctor and the things he'd never see. He loved his planet and his country, but ... still. It'd be an amazing holiday. "Actually, you're more well travelled than me. I went to Switzerland once. That's the extent of my travels."

Rose shook her head and gave a wave of her hand, as if dismissing his statement. "Believe me, I know. Before the Doctor came along, my idea of traveling was a school trip to Paris. Trust me, didn't get a whole lot of culture in, either." Her grin was wide, though, and she gave him a wink. It was rare for her to feel more privileged than anyone else. And, in truth, a tiny part of her would give up every planet she'd seen in favour of someone who looked at her the way Jack looked at Ianto. Wonderful though he might be, Mickey just didn't fit the bill.

"Besides," she added with a smirk, "I hear you lot have plenty of intergalactics going on yourselves here on Earth. You know, one of my very first trips through time was to Cardiff." Of course, Rose had no way of knowing that on that trip, she'd helped create the very Rift that Ianto and Jack worked with and on. How could she? But it made for a great conversation piece.

Ianto had to chuckle, just a little, and drew the blanket a bit tighter around his shoulders. "Yeah well. Now you get to see, well. Everything. Hell of a ride, or so the stories go. I think it's my fate to know people who go everywhere and just stay in one place, me. A trip to Cardiff doesn't count as an impressive trip, you know."

Now, Cardiff was near and dear to his heart and he knew all the tourist attractions it boasted and he still wouldn't holiday there if he could help it. "Though, a few odd things do turn up now and again. Not odder than this, mind."

Rose rolled her eyes, but smirked. "Sweetheart, I don't think anything is odder than this. Even the Doctor is stumped, and I've seen him get out of plenty of tight spots." Okay, sure, some of them were her fault, and he got her out of them with barely a word about how irresponsible she could be. But that was because usually, she meant well! Even the bit with her dad, she was just trying to do what was right. Even if it was, well, very wrong.

She leaned her chin in her hands and smiled, mostly to herself. "It was impressive to me!" she defended, remembering. "It was 1869, I think, that's pretty impressive right there. And there was a race of aliens trying to take over our bodies. Also pretty impressive." Oh, if the Doctor could hear, his ego would be well stroked. "And? Met Charles Dickens. Yep, that's what I said, Charles Dickens." Her grin was impulsive despite herself. "Beautiful city you've got there? Honestly, though... If I had to be trapped on Earth again?" And, the last she remembered, she had been. How she'd met back up with the Doctor was still a mystery to her. "I know I couldn't just go back to working in a shop. I'd want to do something like you lot are doing. Protecting the planet as best you can without leaving Earth."

Ianto's eyes took on the shine that they normally did when Jack waxed poetic about some of his more believable adventures. He really wanted to be out there, not permanently, but to explore and come home. He loved Wales. Didn't mean he didn't want to travel. "If you tell me you shagged Charles Dickens, I'm going to lose a lot of respect for you, Rose."

But then, this was Rose and not Jack. So, yeah.

"I .. Torchwood's all I've done, really. A job in a cafe making coffee isn't ... I mean. After this...? I couldn't work in a shop, either. Torchwood would welcome you, you know. You'd like our pet pteradactyl." Jack'd be over the moon. So would Gwen, now that he thought about it. She'd hae a shopping buddy and there'd be less over sexed testosterone sloshing about, too.

Rose didn't even try to hide the undignified snort that came out when she started laughing. "You've been hanging around Jack too long," she told him with as stern an expression as she could manage. Hearing Jack's idea of 'adventure' would probably ruin Ianto's mind for good. And make Rose's actual adventures pale in comparison. "Never. He was really old when we met him. He died the next year, actually, though I certainly hope the two things aren't related!" No, Adam was the closest she'd come to being romatically involved in any of their travels. Or...well, Jack. But she wasn't about to say that in front of his current partner! It'd be a bit like one of those afternoon talk shows her mum sometimes had on while working.

"You have a pet...what?" she blurted. Okay, that was new to her. And really, why? She should demand a trip to see dinosaurs. Or then again, maybe not. It was the Doctor, after all. He'd probably have them running from a Tyrannosaurus before it was all said and done. "It sounds incredible, honestly. Jack as a leader? You know, I was earthbound before I ended up here. It's kind of nice knowing there's alternatives."

Instead of going charging off into the TARDIS' very heart, which is what she'd actually end up doing once all was said and done. Ah, well. It couldn't be said that Rose wasn't impulsive.

"Yeah, well. After hearing these stories for so long your mind sort of goes along some well established paths. Sorry." So his mind leaped towards certain ideas when he heard traveling stories. Sue him. Better yet, blame Jack. It was easier.

"We've got a pet pterodactyl. I, um. She came through the rift one fine day and I used her to secure a job with Torchwood three." The rest of the circumstances were conveniently shoved under the proverbial bed. Rose didn't need to hear about his betrayals and failures.

"That sounds fascinating," Rose admitted, and she wasn't trying to sound sarcastic or annoyed or anything. She really meant it. "Dinosaurs aren't something I've messed around with yet. She really lives there?" The idea was appealing, actually. Well, so long as she didn't fly around attempting to eat them all. That could be potentially problematic. Or just plain bad.

She leaned back again, scooting so she was at the wall and leaning against it. "What's up with this rift? I've heard it mentioned a time or two, but no details ever get mentioned. I assume it has to do with time, right? If it's dragging in dinosaurs?"

"It's.. Yeah, she lives there. She's got a nest in the wall. Um. Tends to eat sheep when she gets let out." Ianto sounded very sheepish (ha!) at that. Even rubbed the back of his head in a very boyish fashion over it. "I .. sort of named her Myfanwy. But it isn't official or anything."

At mention of the rift, Ianto straightened a little, then thought better of it and hunched so he could wrap himself up in the blanket. He was sort of wishing for Jack's coat about now. "It's a rift in time and space. Mainly, we get the flotsam and jetsam of the universe tossed at us. From any where and any when. Sometimes it takes people or things but not often." Though, even once was too often for Ianto's taste. He grew sober thinking abut Flat Holm.

Well if anything, that got her attention. Rose sat straight up then, looking Ianto directly in his sheepish but rather beautiful eyes. Jack always did have good taste. "You're kidding?" she blurted, shock and amazement flickering over her face. "It takes people? From like...your time? Or other times? Or both? Do they just show up there at the rift or do they sort of...float?"

If nothing else could be said for Rose's travels with the Doctor, it had certainly refined her ability to ask questions. More often than not, the right questions, too.

"Both," Ianto said with a little lift of his eyebrows. "It's usually not people, though. Just junk. We've a whole archive full of rift junk." But what could they do about it? This was with the rift closed and scarred over, too. Years and years worth of stuff and people, coming and going. Since they opened the rift up again...? It was probably worse.

It didn't help Ianto much to know that it was partially his fault that the rift got opened again. This was something he never intended to tell Rose, gossipping or not. He still felt guilt over that betrayal. Reflexively, Ianto glanced towards the room Jack had claimed for theirs and frowned.

Rose saw his backward glance and looked at him worriedly. Again, everything seemed to lead back to Jack. It had to be hard to be Jack sometimes. No, most of the time. And then to be the bloke in love with him? Well, Rose had to feel sort of bad for Ianto, really.

"That's incredible," Rose admitted, dropping her head into her hands. Then she stifled a yawn. Ianto was looking a bit down, she was looking a bit exhausted, why had she kept him up so late? "Oh, for pity's sake, look at us. Gossiping like a couple of school kids." She reluctantly pulled herself to her feet, wondering just how hard it was going to be to sneak an edge of sheet from Remus. Or better still, what the Doctor's expression would be if she just stole his! "You ought to be getting into bed, Jack'll have my head if you start walking around looking like I beat you for keeping you up all night."
