Who: Rose Tyler and Ianto Jones
What: A late night chat
When: Day 18, 11pm
Where: The museum
Rating: If Jack gets mentioned (and he will), PG-13
Status: Active

To say Rose Tyler was mentally exhausted might be a bit of an understatement. Her whole body hurt she was so tired of thinking. Thinking about Remy and his cryptic words, or Dr. John Smith and the fact that he knew her but she didn't know him. She was thinking constantly about her conversation with the Doctor and the bits and pieces and revelations she'd been able to glean off of him.

And all that thinking was making a girl who wasn't quite yet twenty very, very ill.

She couldn't sleep. She could try all she wanted, but her mind was racing and her stomach was churning. Must've been that hardy dinner of a whole granola bar. Though the young woman wasn't prone to panic attacks, she couldn't help the claustrophobic feeling gaining on her. And it was with that nearly terrified feeling that she slid out of the room as quietly as she could manage, walked through the halls of the museum, and planted herself near a window. She didn't trust herself to go outside; this place was crawling with people at night, it seemed, and she didn't have the energy to deal with being snatched just yet. When she was sleeping, sure, why not? Never mind what all the sleep-inducing drugs were probably doing to their systems. But an awake but barely functioning Rose stood no chance against The Powers That Be.

Pulling her mostly dry jacket more tightly around her, she curled up into a ball on the floor of the museum, trying to listen for the sounds of the outside. It was almost unnatural how quiet it could be. In the distance, she heard one of her fellow castaways snort in their sleep and she suppressed a weary smile. This had the potential for a long night.

"Oh, that's a new one. Have you heard the one about the boyfriend with no mouth? Surprisingly creative." Ianto grinned and leaned towards Rose as well, then offered her a bit of his blanket. May has well share the warmth, right? It'd keep the both of them comfortable.

"I'll take your word on the fact that he's better. I haven't really known Jack that long. A couple of years at the most. All I really know is that he's from the fifty first century and Jack Harkness isn't his real name. But that's all, really." Ianto wasn't certain just how far the tales of Jack's immortality had circulated and he didn't want to give anything away if Rose didn't know. It was Jack's tale to tell, wasn't it?

"No mouth? However did he survive?" Rose asked with a giggle, accepting the offered blanket and warming her feet with it. He was terribly resourceful, really. There she'd been in such a hurry to get out and get some time away that she hadn't even thought to bring anything. Well, that and she shared her sheet with a sixteen year-old and maternal instinct told her that he needed it far more than she did.

She lifted her eyebrows at Ianto's tale. Good thing he hadn't revealed Jack's immortality, but what he'd told her was already more than she had to go on. "So it's not his real name. Always wondered, what sort of alien species names their kid Jack? If we're still naming kids Jack three hundred years from now..." Wrinkling her nose, she shook her head but grinned.

"He was pretty shady when I met him," she remarked casually. It was already unspokenly assumed that she'd met him first. "Still the flirt he is now, don't get me wrong," she grinned, touching Ianto's arm with a laugh, "but definitely different. I credit at least part of that to you." Rose had no way of knowing the hundreds of years Jack had spent living among humanity before he'd even met Ianto. But the spark in his eye and the quirk of his mouth? That was purely Ianto, that much she was sure of.

"Well," Ianto said, lowering his voice to a soft little whisper. "I didn't tell you a bloody thing, but since he does think so highly of you, I do know that his brother's name was Grey. Which .. really is bland. I was theorizing that Jack's real name is Beige, which, really, makes Jack a vast improvement." Resourceful? Nah. Ianto was just chilled and unwilling to leave Jack the Furnace with all the blankets. So, naturally, one went with him in his nocturnal wanderings.

Ianto dropped an exaggerated wink and chuckled softly, shrugging just a bit. "Honestly, less of what you see about Jack is due to me. Almost none of it is me, actually. The coffee obsession is me." That's about all, really. Though, he did know that Jack had been a right bastard at one point. ..he still could be a right bastard, actually. "He did miss you, though. Quite a bit."

An unattractive snort escaped her as she giggled at the thought of Jack's real name being Beige. "I suppose Beige would still be better than Chartreuse or Aqua. No wonder he changed it on Earth, no one would let him hear the end of it." Ianto knew about Jack's brother. In all their time together, Jack had never mentioned a brother. Captain, you really were a man of many mysteries, weren't you?

"Well, he does speak highly of your coffee," she said with a giggle. "And...erm, other things." Despite turning bright pink, she was giggling still. How could Ianto tolerate a man who ran around bragging about that? She had no idea. "I suppose most of the credit goes to the Doctor." And her. Though she'd never admit to it. With love and adventure, they'd helped turn the Con Man into a hero. Like it or not. "He risked his life more than once for us. A talent, I hear, he's carried on still." Her smile was wistful, knowing Jack had missed her. What had become of them? Why had they been separated?

Rose should take heart. The only reason Ianto knew about Jack's brother was because Jack's brother had tried to kill him. Repeatedly. That had been a very bad day. Otherwise, he was certain that he would have never heard a peep about Jack's family.

Mock indignation ran rampant across Ianto's face. "He tells people about my other things? I'm hoping that those other things are clerical skills or fire arms skills and not .. um. Other things." He stilled, though, at the mention of the Doctor and pursed his lips. It was fairly clear that he didn't much care for the Doctor at the moment, though he tried not to let it show in day to day goings on. "He does. Constantly. Risk his life, that is. It .. destroys him to lose people."

Not people, Ianto. Rose. Those two shared secrets like girlfriends half the time, especially of the romantic variety. Surely you didn't think the tales of Jack's adventures stopped after he met you! "Your driving skills," Rose said, trying to look as serious as she could manage without bursting into giggles again. "Oh, and you place a mean pizza order." Well...who didn't? It had to be a good guess!

"He's a good man," Rose told him, wiggling her toes a bit to get some feeling back in them. "And you must know, if you hurt him, I'll have to off you. I don't look forward to it, please don't make me. I'm not much for blood so I'd have to smother you in your sleep." She shot him an angelically innocent look and laughed a little, but she did mean it. Sort of. She wouldn't kill him. But if anyone hurt Jack after everything he'd already been through? She'd rip them apart, if only verbally.

Oh, that. Ianto snorted and looked away, smiling a little. "I'm told I'm a terror on the road." Which, he figured, is how you had to drive to get anywhere quickly in an emergency. He couldn't understand why people complained. They got there in one piece, didn't they? Well. Mainly one piece.

Ianto shook his head, just a bit, and glanced back at Rose, embarrassed and smiling still. "I ... try not to hurt him. He's a good deal of everything to me." Very embarrassed now, to have admitted that. Ianto's head ducked and his ears flamed red, but it was dark and the flush was hidden. He hasn't ever admitted that to anyone. Not even to Jack.

"If you don't mind, I think I'm going to change the subject now, please?"

Rose leaned back on her hands with a smirk, eyeing him. Oh, he was adorable. Jack had done well picking this one. Not that he needed her approval, of course, but if he asked it? She'd have given it. This bloke loved her sweet hero, the one who'd kissed her goodbye on Satellite 5 and told she was worth fighting for. She knew in her heart it could never be her. Whatever had happened between her time and his had created a gap, one she could never hope to step over. So if it had to be someone else? Ianto was a perfectly good choice.

Tucking her hair behind her ears, she leaned back again and surveyed him with an interested look. "All right, then," she said with a wide grin. "Have it your way. What is it we're changing the subject to, hmm? World peace? Intergalactic peace, maybe, that's always a good one." She giggled, then, at her own effort to remind him that his interplanetary explorations weren't his alone. "Latest episode of EastEnders? I know you'd have to be far ahead of me, I'm not even caught up on the latest where I'm from. Is it still going, I wonder?"

Oh, but Ianto wasn't in love with the hero. He was in love with the idiot underneathe. Which was an amazing thing, really, if he stopped to think about it. He rarely did. It was a frightening thing to think about.

Anyway.

"I'd rather go on about EastEnders than intergalactic peace, you know. I honestly haven't left the planet before. Well. Ever. If this is still Earth. If it isn't, it's a pretty rubbish way for me to start my interstellar travels." Oh, he wanted to see the stars, but understood that he probably would never get a chance to do it. All those things he heard about from Jack and the Doctor and the things he'd never see. He loved his planet and his country, but ... still. It'd be an amazing holiday. "Actually, you're more well travelled than me. I went to Switzerland once. That's the extent of my travels."
