Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!complete, day 18, location: museum, rose tyler, the doctor (nine)

Who:  The (Ninth) Doctor & Rose Tyler (And eventually Remus Lupin)
Where: In their small office bedroom, in the museum.
When: Day 18: 6:15PM
What:  The Doctor comes back, Rose has questions.
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

The Doctor had spent most of his rainy day at the petrol station, taking apart the gas pumps-- well, he'd only taken apart just one, taking out small pieces, large pieces, and leaving it strewn everywhere. There was no gas of course, so there wasn't any reason to worry. At least, there had been no gas in the one he'd taken apart. He had managed to gather up a lot of small items, enough to make a portion of a sonic modulator, in the hopes he could resonate the glass and well.. shatter it. At least put a big crack in it. He'd meet back up with Ten sometime later tonight and present him with the portion of the modulator that he was working on. it wouldn't take them much longer to make a complete one, if they kept going at this pace.

He had thrown the parts all into a small backpack he'd found at the thrift store, for easy carrying. It was slung over his shoulder at the moment, as he ducked his way into the museum then headed for the door that led into the office that he, Rose, and the werewolf were all sharing. The same room he'd offered to Jack tonight, if he wanted it. It hadn't been any surprise that he'd been turned down. The handle was twisted and he stepped inside, eyebrows lifting and smile appearing as he saw Rose there. "Look at you! Right where you belong. A little wet, though. You're lucky one of us thinks about those things." Even as he said it, he was lowering the bag to the ground. The desk was gone from the office, pushed out of the room, along with the chair, to give them as much floor space as possible. Then he was crouching down and tugging out a t-shirt and some jeans, tossing them in her direction. "I thought about grabbing.. other things.." A bra and underwear, he meant, "But decided this would work just as well." He tugged out a towel and tossed it her way as well, to dry her bra and underwear, if she needed. The leather jacket was tugged off, it'd kept his torso dry, though his pants were a little wet. And the jacket was hung on a hook in the wall, once used for a picture.

Oh, Rose, you were asking him questions that he could have answered for you weeks ago, but that were so much harder to answer now. She'd put two and two together, she was too clever for her own good. But he wouldn't lie to her.. so that meant he had to avoid it.

"We're born the same way humans are, we start as children, we develop into adults.. and our bodies will live on for a very, very long time. We age, of course, but it's a very slow process. And there is an ultimate age that the body can reach, before it just dies on its own, without any trauma. But the Time Lords came up with a way to.. cheat death, as you will. It makes our already long lives twelve times as long, if we're careful. But we aren't always. And if you die too quickly, like in an explosion or you're beheaded, anything like that, the cheat doesn't work, and the body just dies." There, that should satisfy her curiosity, right? "So no, in twenty years, hypothetically, if nothing happened to this body, I wouldn't look forty-five, I'd look just as you see me now, daft as ever." He opened his arms with a smile.

Part of her was tempted to run into those arms. To cling and refuse to let go and tell him that if he wanted anyone else they'd have to get through her first.

But that was a bit creepy, and after the morning she'd had, she wanted to be anything but creepy. So instead she just gave a small smile and a shrug. "You don't look daft, shut up," she chided, but she was giving him a peculiar look. "If nothing happened to that body? So if something did? Like...I don't know, if you were shot or electrocuted or something? Then what?"

Why hadn't she asked all of this before? It was natural to wonder when traveling with an alien who was going on a thousand years old. Why was it just now occurring to her to ask? Stupid place and its stupid spare time that let her think.

"Then I use my cheat, and I regenerate." Regenerate, it could mean all manner of things. Maybe he just.. grew back the injured pieces, like a star fish. That was what it implied.. and it was true, sort of. He grew back another body, and he never really knew what he was going to end up looking like.

"So that I can be back in one piece and healthy and ready for the next adventure." There, that had to answer your question right, Rose? "It's sort of like starting over again, in a fresh body." Not that she'd have any reason to suspect that the body wouldn't look identical, like having your car totaled, and then getting an identical one to replace it. That was surely what it was, right? Right. Who went around just changing their face? No one.

Fair enough. At least he was being honest with her. She appreciated that more than she could say at the moment. The day had been full of lies and twists and hints at half-truths.

She grew quiet, imaginging him losing a leg to some leg-eating monster and watching it grow back. He'd mentioned a whole new body. What must that be like? And what sort of injury would cause him to need one? Possibly the electrocution she'd mentioned. No playing her iPod in the TARDIS shower, got it.

Absently, she chewed on the thumbnail on her left hand as she considered how to ask her next question. "Before me...did you... I mean, were you alone?" Rose's time. Remy's time. Who else had had time? And how had it ended? But she couldn't ask that. Not yet. Not without throwing a fit.

"Before you?" He lifted his eyebrows some.. then lowered blue eyes to the ground, and finally around the room as he considered how to answer her question. Finally, blue came back to rest on hazel. "For a long time, yes. During the Time War, after the Time War, until I found you, I was alone. A long time, Rose." Well, long for a human.. not too long for a Time Lord, though it felt longer, with nothing but hate and rage and death as his companions.

"I've taken others with me, shown others the universe. Many of them are dead now. Either from old age or.. something else." Rose knew what 'something else' could mean. "Rarely more than one at a time, but it's happened before." As she well knew, since they'd taken Jack along with them, and Rose's untrustworthy boyfriend whose name wasn't even one the Doctor could recall, just months later. "I only take the best. I said it and I meant it." What did any of this have to do with anything?

She wanted to tell him. There was little she didn't tell him, really. He knew her inside and out, better than anyone else she knew. She told him more than Jack, more than Mickey, more than even her own mother, and they were close as far as mothers and daughters went. It only felt right that he knew this part of her, the scared and worried part that was terrified to lose him.

But if she told him...then what? Would that change their future together? Would he escort her right off to nowhere? Would that stop him from somehow, somewhere picking up the Cajun who'd ripped her heart out and shown it to her only hours before?

The problem was, she didn't want him to be alone, either. He'd been so angry when she'd met him. It had taken a long time to find out why, but she had and she never wanted him to feel that way again. "You know... You know you can tell me anything, right?" she said quietly, turning her eyes away from his. She had no idea what he'd read behind the scared expression she carried at the moment. "I mean, if you ever wanted to."

"I know that, Rose." But he couldn't. Not really. It was complicated.. but he knew that he could tell her anything within reason and that she'd keep his secrets, and his feelings, with her life. "And you know that goes both ways." It wasn't a question, but a statement. And he was reaching out to pull that worn coat from the hook on the wall, give it a quick shake, and hand it out to her.

"Put dry clothes on, warm yourself up, or you'll catch cold." And being sick in a place like this wasn't going to be fun for anybody.

"What's got you so worked up?" It was time to keep up your part of 'telling him anything', Rose.

She didn't answer right away. First she gathered up the denims abd t-shirt and made her way to what had likely been a storage closet during the museum's heyday. She changed quickly, wondering why she was so willing to comply now when she'd been so argumentative on his arrival.

When Rose returned to the room, she was trying to smile. The expression was weak, though. She curled up in the warmth of the offered coat, feeling smaller than usual.

"I talked to...someone today. Someone who said they knew you. But not the you from now. Future you.". She swallowed hard. "And future you doesn't have me."

"Oh, is that what it is?" He smiled though, which may have been a strange expression for the conversation.. but it also indicated that there wasn't anything wrong. The Doctor didn't smile to cover things up, he only smiled when he felt it. Granted, sometimes he felt it when he was running for his life, or when some very strange, potentially dangerous things were happening..

But mostly, it was a good sign, that smile. "Any events of the future me, I can't vouch for, I'm just about as much in the dark about that as you are." Just about. "But I can tell you, Rose Tyler, that I could know them from hundreds and hundreds of years in my future, long after your human body has given up." Comforting, Doctor. "And just because it happens in my future, doesn't mean that the person would be from your future. The TARDIS is a time machine," He reminded her simply, eyebrows raising closer to his hairline. "I can go back in time and meet your mother in her teens, if I so wished it. Which I don't," His eyebrows lowered back down then, as he took on a thoughtful look. "No, really don't."

"Just think, you could be my real dad," she teased, a giggle in her voice. "That the real reason you're toting me around, Pop? Felt guilty for the years you were gone?" Of course, she knew he wasn't. She'd seen Pete Tyler before he died and she looked as much like him as she did Jackie. That and he and her mother most definitely didn't get along. And that was on a good day.

She considered how much else to tell him. The day had been so bloody fool of insanity that she didn't even know where to start. "I did meet someone from my future, though," she said quietly, thinking it over. "Said he knew me from some time before now. Have I ever mentioned how completely deranged this time thing is?" It made her head spin and her stomach queasy, and she pulled the coat more snugly around her as she sat back down and leaned against the wall.

He hadn't answered the most important question running through her head; would he ever just up and leave her behind?

Rose got a flat look for her words about him being her father. But all the same, he was coming closer and briefly inspecting his coat on her. It actually looked quite good, but he wasn't going to say a thing about it, only turned and moved to sit down next to her, there on the floor, back against the wall.

"Who did you meet from your future?" He prompted, not imagining it could be himself. No, he wouldn't have told her that he knew her in the 'future', that was crazy. Right?

He'd done crazy things before... especially for Rose. "Who's here that said they knew you from the future?" Which one of these people could know her? Maybe Sarah Jane.. Jack-- no, Jack knew her now. Ianto Jones. Maybe the Cajun had met her in the future? No, that was impossible, he wasn't a time traveler and.. well. Okay, it wasn't impossible.
