Log: Zoro & Sanji
He needed to think. Zoro had asked such strange questions and acted so unlike anything Sanji remembered. And Sanji hadn't hated it. He was confused and anxious, but he was also glad to see the stupid swordsman. It felt like longer than four years since that ridiculous man had been in his life, but their time on the Merry burned bright in his memory all the same. Annoying as it was.
Sanji blew out a frustrated breath and adjusted his gloves. His hands were starting to ache. Just one more thing and he would need to call it quits. He tucked his gardening scissors back into his apron and picked up his basket to turn and move towards another row of vegetables. He nearly ran into Zoro in the process.
"Shit," he barked in surprise. "You--how does someone with three swords sneak around so quietly when he can't sit in a booth without hitting himself in the face? I've never understood it."
It took an hour longer than he had intended, but Zoro had eventually given in and had asked for help to find his way to Sanji. It was a move he normally wouldn't haven't made, but he was desperate in a way he hadn't been in a long time. Until Luffy, he had sworn off caring for anyone, but it wasn't until Sanji, he had let someone have this strange power over him, one that allowed the blond in close enough to hurt him in a way that swords never would.
What he felt for Luffy and what he got back from the rubber man was easy and uncomplicated. What he felt for Sanji was simply more. And he had no intention of telling the other man that until their captain had urged him otherwise and now it felt like it was too late.
It was a bad feeling, but he pushed it down for now. For now, he would be content with putting eyes on Sanji. When he did though, he fell utterly still. Sword quiet, feet quieter, and his breath taken the second he saw those shoulders…the moment he took in that floppy hair.
Only when Sanji turned and spoke, did he start breathing again. And with that, he moved, dropping the bag he had with him to the ground before getting right into Sanji's personal space. The wrong world and the wrong moment, maybe, but it felt like the right move as he slipped one hand to the back of Sanji's neck and the other to cradle the back of his neck.
No hesitation as he pressed a kiss to shocked lips.
This was the last thing Sanji expected. No, that wasn't even right. This had been nowhere on the list of things Sanji expected. It hadn't even been in the same hemisphere.
But his instincts - and the very quiet and very fierce attraction he'd harbored for Zoro years ago - only let him freeze for a moment. He kissed back, chasing Zoro's mouth briefly and fisting a hand into his stupid green hair. This was good. This was too good. This was madness.
Sanity prevailed. He broke away and took a step back, a baffled expression on his face and his eyebrows pinched together as he moved his hands wildly. "Have you lost your mind?"
Zoro had been trying so very hard not to get lost in the kiss, but he looked absolutely stupid and wrecked when Sanji finally pulled away. Cold reality washed over him at the sound of his words and his walls started to go back.
“Just checking to see if it was you,” he said coolly, turning around to pick up his bag again. The second he turned away, one hand went to his lips, which were still tingling. He strengthened up and turned back to face the other man, his composure cool and seemingly unaffected. He wasn't, not by a longshot, but he could pretend until he made himself numb to everything but his mission again. “It's you. Come on, show me where I'm staying until tomorrow's meeting.”
Sanji blinked at him, hands still outspread in stunned silence. He hadn't had very much time with Zoro at home, but it had been enough to know this was very strange behavior and yet somehow still him. Stubborn, decisive, full of shit when it came to anything about his emotions. Sanji didn't know what to do with him when his mouth was still buzzing.
"You can't just storm in here, kiss me and then tell me what to do, seaweed brain. I'm collecting ingredie--Damn it." He realized he'd dropped his basket while attached to Zoro's face and half the contents had spilled out onto the floor. He crouched to start carefully putting everything back in the basket, like each item had personally offended him. "Wait," he said, squinting up at Zoro. "How would you know it was me from kissing me? Is that what things are like for you and your Sanji?"
“Like what?” Zoro asked, before a little smirk stole across his face. It was easier to ignore his pounding heartbeat when he was messing with Sanji. “You on your knees for me?” A pause, to let that sink in, before adding, “No, not really.” He cast his gaze around the garden, looking at the various green things growing. “I guess I can help you gather things. If you want.”
Sanji choked on air, sputtering as he scrambled back to his feet. The no, not really disappointed him in the strangest way. What did he care what Zoro got up to with another version of him? Unfortunately, it seemed he cared more than he was ready to admit. He blew out a loud breath, pushing his bangs off of his eye for a brief moment.
"You are a demon," he sighed. "But carrying things is the least you can do." He shoved the basket into Zoro's arms and turned towards the last row he'd been aiming for in the first place. "I just need one more thing. If you can refrain from accosting me," he said, not sounding all that put out, "then I can finish here and show you where Luffy and I stay. There is a cot you can use."
Barely shifting back when the basket was shoved into his arms, Zoro smirked. “Dunno, doesn’t sound like you don’t want me accosting you. Is it your cot?” Somehow, it was much easier to tease the other man in this way, when it wasn’t feelings that were being talked about, but pure, physical desire. There was no weight to it, no emotions that Zoro had to dissect and second guess.
There were no feelings to hurt, not between him and this Sanji that didn’t have the memories of the last four months in his mind.
That made Sanji huff a laugh, helplessly. "Seriously, what has gotten into you? Is this really how you are all the time now? I thought you were going to come in here and yell at me about how I did a piss poor job protecting our captain - no matter what you said on the network. And instead…" He flapped a hand in Zoro's face, indicating his baffling everything.
He couldn't pretend he was disappointed. As good as it felt to spar with Zoro and as much as he wanted someone who loved Luffy to blame him, Sanji liked this terrible flirting. It was a horrifying realization.
"And no, for the record," he sighed. "It's Luffy's cot.”
Zoro shrugged, shifting the basket in his arms to be under one arm, as he scratched at his chin. “I could yell at you, but what's that going to get us? Anything I can say, you've already told yourself. Probably worse than I ever could. I can yell at you if that’s what you really want, but I really rather just get to figuring out how to get our guy back.”
His aloof demeanor softened, as he peered at the blond, he added, “I want to know what I can do to help you too. You look exhausted.”
"Wow, thanks," Sanji snarled back. He self-consciously reached up to fix his hair, like there was some way for him to suddenly not look like he lived in a sewer and his best friend had been held hostage for days. After a few seconds, he gave up and his shoulders sagged.
"Once we get Luffy back, I'll be fine. I'm just not sleeping well. I'm not used to sleeping without him close by anymore. You know how he is. Draping over you and snoring." Sanji sounded too fond to pull off annoyed. He sighed loudly and claimed a few zucchinis to add to the basket in Zoro's arms. If his eyes lingered on the way Zoro's biceps bulged just carrying the basket full of produce, that wasn't anyone's business but his own. "The point is," he made himself say, turning away quickly, "is you're good at finding Luffy when he needs you even with your terrible sense of direction, so I need you to do that again."
“Hey,” Zoro said, reaching out and clapping the other man on the shoulder. He felt a little awkward, not used to showing a more sensitive side to any version of Sanji, but he could see how tight the lines around the man’s eyes were, the way his mouth was pinched. “We’ll get him back. I won’t stop until we do, you know that, so he’ll be back and you guys can sleep together or whatever it is you do.” Zoro had to beat down the flare of possessiveness that he felt at the idea of Luffy and Sanji together, even as innocently as sleeping. Not because it wasn’t his place to feel jealous, but because he had no idea who he was jealous of in that case.
Both? Both.
Sanji startled a bit as Zoro's hand fell on him. It wasn't something they'd ever done. But neither was kissing. Clearly this Zoro and his Sanji weren't interested in keeping things as they'd been at the start. And he couldn't say he was complaining.
It took a moment but finally, he nodded, glancing sideways with softer eyes at Zoro. "I know we will." He knew Zoro meant it when he said he wouldn't stop. He wasn't sure that was better, but still. After a beat, he put the last of the vegetables in the basket and manhandled Zoro to face the exit. His hands stayed at Zoro's waist, like he planned to walk him back to the room like this.
"Now please, stop being so nice to me. It's freaking me out. Let's go get everyone fed and find a place for your precious swords to 'sleep'," Sanji teased.
“So fucking bossy,” Zoro complained, the side of his mouth lifting in a smirk. Whatever seriousness of the moments before had been, it faded away into an easiness that had him allowing himself to be pushed around. He could have dug his heels in, but he didn't really want to end up physically fighting with the cook. Not when he felt better about the whole universal kidnapping thing that was currently going on.
As long as he had Sanji and Robin by his side, he had full confidence they would get their captain back and then find a way back to the better Vallo they had been in. And if they didn't? Well, as long as he had his crew, Zoro would be just fine.
