She wasn’t used to watching her son lose though.
Her son. It still felt surreal. She never thought she had a son, or any child that was actually biologically hers. Adopting their daughter in the future hadn’t been difficult to believe at all. Delivering a kid still felt impossible. Alien stuff or not.
She’d watched him in the ring, both impressed and anxious. He was so very clearly a combination of her and Evie, but in appearance and fighting skills. It was unnerving, and exciting. Sara knew he’d be okay, her healing powers had gone to him, which meant even if he sustained a fight ending injury, he’d be healed in minutes.
That didn’t stop her from feeling anxious though. After they were both out (again, kick to the ego but not unexpected in this crowd of seasoned badasses), she found him in the underground. “You looked good in there.” she said with a smile, “You must have had some excellent teachers.”
Being in the past was insane. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to how anyone had been pulled from the future. Leo half expected that. When had there ever been any sort of reasoning to anything Vallo had done? Never in his experience. It made living in the world an adventure. At least this was one of the fun ones.
He grinned as he glanced over at his mom. It was somehow weird and completely normal to see her standing there next to him. She looked almost the same, but there were differences he could still pick out, ones that reminded him he was in the past. The lack of familiarity was the most obvious.
“They’re alright,” he teased, knocking his elbow into hers. “It’s cool to see this place in its infancy though.”
Sara looked around the Underground, arching an eyebrow. Now she was curious about what it was going to look like in however many years from where Leo was from. But she also wasn’t going to ask, because she was looking forward to finding out herself and watching the Twins expand it. “I look forward to finding out what this place becomes.” What they all did with their lives, really.
“Do you want to grab a drink with me?” She asked, nodding toward the bar. He was of age, and if Sara didn’t scold his sister for stealing some of their personal stash while underage, this wouldn’t hurt anything.
Assuming he drank. “I figured we could watch the audience participation that breaks out when it inevitable becomes a tense fight from someone from now and someone from the future.” It was going to be lively in here tonight, and she was looking forward to it.
Leo nodded, pushing off where he was so they could head toward the bar. It wouldn’t be the first time he drunk with his mom but he knew it had to be odd for Sara. It was odd for him, considering her and Evie were so young still. Everyone was so much younger than he was used to. It was an amusing turn of events, one that he’d heard a lot about before but hadn’t experienced until this time around. Hopefully he’d get brought back another time too.
“I am hoping Kimmy gets to fight one of her dads.” Even better if she was able to kick their asses. Leo didn’t doubt for a second that she could. “And that Gracs gets out soon.” His cousin would never live it down. She was harder on herself than anyone else.
Sara was still aligning names with future kids and faces, but she was pretty sure she knew who Kimmy and Gracs were. It helped that this time around there seemed to be less kids visiting from the future. Last year it had almost felt like the Outlander numbers had doubled for two weeks.
“Hey, don’t doubt Shiro and Keith.” Sara countered. One was her co-commander and member of the clone club, and the other a member of the hal-alien club. Plus she knew they were both badass. “My money is on her dads if they do fight though.” Solidarity, or something. Even if they might, on some level, subconsciously restrain themselves.
“I will take that bet,” Leo said, grinning at the idea of making some quick cash. Fight Club was always a toss up, but he had a feeling Shiro and Kieth would restrain themselves if they went up against their kid. Kimmy wouldn’t hold back. As for Gracs. Well. She’d be hardest on herself if she didn’t win. It was still fun egging her on though.
“How long have you been in Vallo at this point?” The timelines were weird, but he had a feeling it was under five years. Or close to that.
“You’re on, kid.” she said with a smirk, almost reaching out to ruffle his hair, but stopping herself half way. She didn’t want to cross any boundaries before she knew what they were. She wasn’t the version of his mother he was used to.
She had to pause and think about that question for a second. Before coming to Vallo, she wasn’t used to being anywhere for long periods of time, except outside of time and space itself. “Over three years now.” Sara said after a beat. She had been one of the first waves to arrive, working on the defense teams under the then leader Steve Rogers. Times had changed, and damn quickly too.
“Hey, in the future, are we finally able to breach that damn barrier that keeps us from space, or is my ship still basically woefully grounded?”
He wouldn’t have minded the head ruffle, though it’d been a few years since either of his moms had done that. Three years though. Man, that seemed like such a short time considering everything, but Leo knew that also had to be long for his mom. From the stories he’d been told he knew she was used to blipping around timelines and things. They did that a bit in Vallo but no to any great degree.
Leo arched a brow at her question though and mocked zipping his lips. “I believe that’s called spoilers.” And he’d been cautioned against giving too many of those. It could prevent things from happening or make them happen too soon and poof, life altered.
“You’re happy though. Both of you.” And he figured that counted for a lot.
Sara made a face of mock annoyance, because she knew exactly what it was like to be on the end of having spoilers. She did not enjoy being on the not-knowing ending. “This has to be years of knowing the future coming back to haunt me.” she said with a sigh, eyes gazing wistfully past him as she remembered what it was like to hop from time to time, knowing random things about the future that most of the people at home did not.
Still, she smiled as she flicked her gaze back to Leo and flung an arm around his shoulder. “With you and your sister, how could we not be? The two of you probably bring more chaos into our lives than Vallo itself.” she said fondly.
“Lets go find a seat?” she suggested, looking out at the crowd settling in for the next match. “Can you at least let me know what I told you about your namesake?”
“I think all of us kids bring a lot of chaos to all of your futures,” Leo teased, plopping himself down on a chair that still gave a decent view to the fighting. Whether or not they’d been more trouble as toddlers or teenagers was still wildly debated.
As for his namesake. “He was a good man in the end. One who sacrificed himself to save a lot of people you loved and the timeline. Or something like that. There was also stuff about him being a master thief and escape artist. But I think mum says I get that from her and not because of his name.”
“I think that’s kids in general.” Sara pointed out as she dropped down into a seat beside him, position herself at an angle so she could both see him, and the fights. Mostly she was interested in watching his reactions. Or just watching him. Which may be creepy, but she reserved the right to want to learn as much about his mannerisms as she could.
“Uh, I will have you know that I am also a master escape artist and excellent thief.” Those were just skills she did not need to exercise as much these days. “But yeah, that was Snart.” If he ever came back to life he’d never let Sara live down naming her son after him, but it would be worth it. “So it could have just as easily come from me.”
Kids did add a lot of chaos, true. But Outlander ones seemed to up that level by about twenty. At least in Leo’s experience. And Vallo ate that shit up, egging them on with each crazy adventure.
“So basically,” Leo mused, stroking his chin. “I got it from both of you. No wonder I’m a natural at it. Fair warning. You’re going to get called to the principal’s office a lot.” Was it his fault most adults didn’t understand the beauty and necessity of Kid Fight Club? Or how he couldn’t possibly back down from a dare to scale to the top of the gym to retrieve one lost item or another?
“You got that from me too.” Because Sara spent most of her time in school in trouble. Not from anything related to being an assassin, but for more normal reasons. Skipping school, getting into fights, the normal things.
Having to go into the principal's office wasn’t the worst thing, as long as he wasn’t bullying people. She got the feeling that was never going to be an issue.
“Fights about to start. Lets see who wins this.”
