There were flowers in her hair and a drink in her hand. One of those things Penelope was not supposed to have (the drink), but she was going to relinquish neither—even if, strictly speaking, she wasn't supposed to have alcohol in the event that it interacted adversely with her potion regimen. She had forgotten about that precisely one drink ago, but did have the remaining good sense to ensure she ate something.

Relieved that the party was outdoors, Penelope had summoned the courage to come at Kera's behest, wanting very much to congratulate Adian. And aside from Kera's visits, there had been few friendly faces in the last four months. While she did now get to see other forms of life three to four times weekly, beautifying the alleyways of Knockturn Alley was not quite ripe with opportunities for socialising.

However, explaining her recent absence to curious people (the nastiest case of Cerebrumous Spattergroit) was getting rather old, as was answering what she was doing with her life these days (lying, evidently). To soothe her nerves, she made flower bouquets and crowns with Hestia Jones, but when that had not relieved the irritation, a pretty pink drink that seemed to glitter in the firelight had done the trick.

Blinking at the wizard's dilemma before her, Penelope looked up and thought, was that—? Before his name even entered her mind, there was the dull heat of a flush creeping up her cheeks. In a kneejerk reaction, she lowered her eyes in shyness, but when she peered up at him through her lashes, there was a certain slyness to the slant of her eyes.

"It's metaphorically explosive, isn't it?" she asked. "Sometimes, you can't tell."

Sage turned the tart over in his palm, his eyes dropping down to examine it (yes, the only reason...) and contemplate her question.

"That's a valid concern," he murmured, "you can never tell when Beau is involved..."

While he did not think that his friend would actually put something in the food to make it volatile, Sage had blown up enough cauldrons in his life to be at least a tiny bit cautious of the concoctions he mixed together. Food and alcohol normally did not cause such a disruption (though with enough alcohol consumption one could...), even with the added potions flowing throughout his system, but...

She was joking. His thoughts were going adrift and Sage's lips pulled up. He attempted to break the tart in half and produced the larger piece to Penelope.

"Do you remember me?" he couldn't help but ask. Sage had been surprised by the amount of people in attendance who had recognized him, even if it had been after a double take. Not that he thought he looked much different, but it had been a very long time... "My hair's a little longer."

Amused at his little quip, Sage's smile grew and he looked back up at Penny.

Though there was something of a smirk growing on her face, Penelope was unable to bring her own gaze to meet his and instead had her turn studying the jagged larger half of the treacle tart she was not entirely interested in. No, instead, her pleasantly plastered mind was doing nothing to lessen the pink stain on her cheeks by summoning all those hopeful memories she'd had of passing him in the corridors on the way to class, as fresh in her memory right then as if she had just last night been hiding her face in her pillow as she whispered to Kera about a near-miss on the way to Charms.

Which was why when he asked that question, so stunned was she that he didn't see exactly what was playing on a loop in her head that her eyes widened briefly as Penelope darted a glance up at him. Could he really wonder if—?

In regarding the smile on his face, her brows crinkled in apparent confusion as she tilted her head to the side. "Oh, you mean… you aren't Beau?" she asked doubtfully, pressing her fingers to her lips in an attempt to keep them from curving upwards.

Sage laughed. A full, hearty one, and suddenly some of the heavy cloak of anxiety and indifference (how did that work, truly?) shifted off his shoulders.

"The ego I would need to speak in third-person," he let out, running a hand through his hair. Sage shook his head, "I don't think I'd be able to lift my big head off the ground."

He decided, already, even if her attention was pulled away from him in the next second for the rest of the night, that this quick minute had made it worth coming out. Sage had not been in the mindset to think about who they might see at the party as usually he and Mina made it a point to be each other's lifeline, so...he was glad he got to see Penelope Fawcett, and he was glad to see she could still bring a smile to his face.

Sage moved to ask her how she had been, but then thought...the polite thing to do after she answered would be to ask what he had been doing all these years and...he didn't think it sounded very impressive, sitting in an apothecary and refilling old ladies' potion prescriptions.

"It's been a long time," Sage said instead, having lost complete interest in the treacle tart. Instead, he wondered how he could have not seen in her so many years but his heart could jump back into that old familiar offbeat rhythm.

She thought he had a very nice sized head, as it were. "A very long time," she agreed, dropping her hand from her mouth as her lips formed a quiet smile.

They had not seen one another since their Hogwarts days, and even then, Penelope had not really seen him since before that fateful day the silence had swallowed her whole. As it had him, too, not so very long after. But in spite of thoughts that should have been sad—were sad—and things she did not care to or could not remember, the sight of him took her back to happier times, simpler times—a reminder of the sort of innocence sixteen-year-olds had in spades.

And wasn't it was a strange thing, to be standing in front of a grown Sage Yates, tipsy (all right, drunk), with eleven of twelve weeks of compulsory community service to go, and still feel like a sixth year innocently delaying her entrance for breakfast in the Great Hall on the off chance that she might accidentally bump into a certain tall blond wizard?

"Your hair really is quite a bit longer," she said, tilting her head in the other direction as she studied a face that was at the same time somehow very changed and not at all different. Her fingers itched to know what it was like to run through his hair, and Penelope gave fervent thanks to whoever was listening that he was much taller than her so such a manoeuvre could not be gracefully attempted, even by an emboldened drunkard like herself.

She jostled a flower as she absently tucked her own unruly curls behind one ear. "I like it."

Penny Fawcett liked his hair. It did indeed seem as if he’d been transported back to Hogwarts and Sage could not say that he wasn’t enjoying the feeling. He had been happy in school, he’d had friends in school, he’d excelled at school, so what…? Was there to not enjoy…? His last few months had been a miserable blur, but he’d spent the majority of his time at Hogwarts learning and enjoying his time. Enjoying every aspect of it, really…

“I guess I’ll keep it, then,” Sage said, his smile growing even wider. The treacle tart was long forgotten and had turned into crumbs in his hands. He remembered quite clearly how easy it was to stare at Penelope, but usually that had been across the Great Hall or during lectures. Or when they had a class together, but their last names put them at opposite ends of the room---

---he blinked, thinking that as an adult, it wasn’t very polite to stare. It probably wasn’t very polite to stare as a teenager, either, but…

“Have you seen the rose garden?” Sage all but blurted. He jutted a thumb toward where he’d seen an entrance sign. “I’d been meaning to go, I think it’s a maze, but I can’t be sure if Beau was hyping it up to be more than it was...and then I lost Mina, but it...it’s probably nice, but I understand if you---would rather...not.”

Oh, that had gone well. Sage’s face was as red as the roses he was attempting to visit.

Penelope blushed when she gathered he was asking her to see the rose garden with him—at least, she assumed Sage was asking her to accompany him even though those precise words had not been uttered. In her state of intoxication, however, Penelope was perfectly thrilled to assume the implication existed, the accompanying dialogue in her head sounding a bit like a high-pitched series of syllables strung together to form the semi-coherent thought of JUMPINGJOBBERKNOLLSSAGEYATESWANTSTOBEALONEWITHME?.

She managed a bashful nod.

Rather than dwell on what foolishness her previously mentioned state of intoxication could land her in, or the fact that she was imbibing at all when she'd been strongly (perhaps expressly) forbidden to do so, Penelope instead thought about what she might do with all the opportunities that might present themselves inside the (hopefully) dark and (had better be) lonely maze of flower bushes.

There was probably a fountain because proper mazes always had fountains at the centre. (The small detail of whether or not it was a proper maze had at this point already been lost on Penelope.)

Probably in an attempt to prolong recalling this moment with the veil of insobriety lifted in the morning and screaming about it, Penelope finished the last of her sparkling pink liquid courage, and the glass disappeared from her hand with a soft poof. The shy smile she'd peeked up at him with began to turn coy as she mused, "I don't believe anyone has ever gotten up to any good in the rose bushes."

Sage estimated that he had only 5% insinuated mischief in the rose garden. His already colored face continued to heat up, but his smile never waned. It had been a very long time since he had been up to no good and it seemed somewhat fitting that it was Penelope Fawcett was involved with the mischief. How many cauldrons had he tipped over at the sight of her? How many times had he fumbled his words incoherently because she’d sent him a smile?

He could not be deemed someone who had much confidence when it came to women as was evident by his stuttering and the crumbled tart that was now all but disintegrated in his hands. In fact, he was probably right awful when it came to that field, but as Sage wiped his hands down on his robes, he had a fleeting streak of fearlessness pass through him that he would blame on his previously mentioned potions, the few drinks he had in his system, and that nearly devilish look in Penny’s eyes.

His grin slid into something a bit more wicked and he put his (now clean) hand out to her.

“I don’t believe that will be changing tonight.”
