My friend Robert has inspired me, I'm thinking of getting a dog. Possibly a puppy, but maybe a rescue dog from one of the local shelters. I get a bit lonely, sometimes, and could use the companionship.

I've got it all worked out: I can bring him with me to school and do my research outside, when possible. There may be a few hours where he'd have to stay outside, but I'd take breaks and go and play with him and walk him around when I'm forced to stay in the lab. If need be, my parents can dog sit.

I'm thinking some sort of setter or retriever. A majestic dog, you know. Something regal. Will keep everyone posted.

	The breed I'm looking at the most has some joint problems, but I think if I got him checked out by a vet and learned how to best take care of him, a shelter dog would still be fine. (Reply to this) (Parent)

As a warning, any kind of setter or retriever is going to need extensive exercise. They're bred as working dogs and it's very unhealthy for them to be stationary for too long.

That being said, please get a rescue dog and no a pure bred. They're much healthier physically and there are so many that need good homes. In addition, rescue dogs tend to make better companions. Somehow they just know they've been saved.

Whatever you do end up with, I would love to see a photograph!

	I'm very active myself, so that shouldn't be a problem. I go stir crazy if I don't go for a long walk or run before I head off to school, even if it means getting up a bit earlier. Plus I play rugby most weekends, so he can come and help out on the pitch. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)
