Happy new year, you lot.

To the New Year
BY W. S. MERWIN
With what stillness at last
you appear in the valley
your first sunlight reaching down
to touch the tips of a few
high leaves that do not stir
as though they had not noticed
and did not know you at all
then the voice of a dove calls
from far away in itself
to the hush of the morning

so this is the sound of you
here and now whether or not
anyone hears it this is
where we have come with our age
our knowledge such as it is
and our hopes such as they are
invisible before us
untouched and still possible

what strange future will unfold
this darkness now to dispell?
what dreams can heretofore untold
be told now all too well?
For this a new day, and a new age, and a new dream
and if by chance we percolate the inner demons of olden gleams
we find we have but one more moment, and one more thought
and it is new, and yet it is not
for the future, the past, and the present are told
not by the courageous, not by the bold,

but by those who walk, and who dare to dream
of a future running, perchance to seem
somehow brighter, somehow more
and not hurtful, not a bore
Just people, walking forward, step and breath and step again
and finding their way into the future by these steps and then
simply never stopping, never being willing to fade
and simply being willing to pay what must be paid
the future unwritten, the past unfolded now behind,
Shall we walk my friend? And be no more blind?
