I thought I'd gotten the rabbit I woke up to last month comfortably established at the Magic Guild. Nice little hutch in the library for people to talk to it, and be as creeped out as I was by it's repeated use of one word in that grating voice, but I go in today to feed and water the little thing and it's pouting in the corner of it's hutch not looking at anyone.

Anybody know if rabbits can get depressed? And if they can what do I do to fix it?

DUH. Of course rabbits, or any animal for that matter, can get depressed. How often do you take the rabbit out of the hutch?

Myself? Every day when I come in to check on him. I don't know how often everyone else does.

So he gets a LOT of interaction with people? Not just with you, but others too?

I think so? I'm not at the Guild all the time but he's in one of the rooms that a lot of people use.

But is he bonded to anyone? Animals bond to certain people.

I don't think so. He showed up from my Dreams but Fen was the one who was handling him in them.

Who's Fen? A friend of yours? Maybe the rabbit just needs more friends.

My wife in the Dreams.

Maybe the rabbit is missing her?

Maybe. I never asked if he was her personal messenger rabbit or just a general one.

Which means you probably need to get him a friend.

Looks like I'm being outvoted on this - you're the second person who's told me that.

Unless you're going to stay there 24/7 with the rabbit, then yeah, you're going to be outvoted.

Oh yeah, rabbits can get depressed. How much time does it get playing, and are there any other animals there? Rabbits are super social animals. Also how big is it's hutch? Rabbits need more space than it looks like they would.

There aren't any other animals at the Guild. Or at least not in the library.

And it's got a pretty big hutch. Width of two bookshelves. I put lots of toys in there for it.

Then it sounds to me like it's lonely. Have you ever thought of getting a friend?

I am really hoping not to get another talking rabbit.

You could get a regular rabbit. Pet stores have adoption drives all the time, and they don't only have just cats and dogs. Or you could find a rabbit rescue.

[info]literalhighking

They have rabbit rescues?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]outsidethewalls

Of course they do, pretty much any animal people keep as pets have a rescue. Even parrots, because having something that screams at you and you need to will to someone because the thing will outlive you somehow makes the perfect pet.

Is it a boy or girl rabbit? Because you'll need to know so you don't wind up with extra rabbits.

So parrots are the magical rabbits of this world?

I'm fairly certain it's a male. That voice is just deep and gravelly. And terrifying to wake up to.

Something like that.

I can't say I've ever heard any of our girls talk to back that up. I'd just confirm it, and then start looking for a male rabbit. They need friends.

I just pray that it doesn't start talking at the vet when I go to get it confirmed.

Yeah that would be kind of awkward. Maybe the vet will think it's a prank or something though and not really take it seriously?

Unless they see his mouth moving.

Why can't there be any vets that are dreamers.

Ooookay first thing that pops up on google is a pineapple hammock. I never would have put bunnies and pineapples together. Carrots, yes.

How should I know?!? Fillorian's apparently use them for pregnancy tests. Or at least pregnancy announcements.

Rabbits need hammocks?

[info]sailor_v

....I think people used to use them on earth too. I remember hearing about it in old movies, anyway.

I mean. It's a bed? There's one made of woven grass he might like better and hurts my head less thinking about. And that one's at one of the nearby pet stores! So I can call to have them put to the side to pick up.

Thank God that's not done anymore.

I guess he could use a bed. I just got him the basics - food bowls and stuff.

You didn't think of a bed as a basic? I'm getting him one, and maybe one of the hammoks. It looks like they've also got wooden carrot cars. Which makes sense. Also a game where you can hide a treat under things they can lift to look for it.
