Well, I haven't talked about my dreams for a little bit but here we go. Found out that the white-haired man in my dreams is a Witcher, by profession. And I think he's the man I've been sort of, uh, promised to? Not for marriage but by destiny. Whatever that shite means.

Honestly, though the guy seems like kind of an arsehole.

My dreams are some kind of weird sort of... middle-ages esque fantasy place? So destiny's a really big thing there. Everyone seems to just let destiny run their lives.

Now that does seem like a good way to not take responsibility for anything at all. 'Oh, no, I didn't murder him, destiny made it happen.'

Right? "Oh I guess destiny means I can't go out today..." It feels kind of like a good way to shirk all responsibilities. But then sometimes people end up accidentally promising children to other people in payment and then destiny conspires, apparently.

Well, it's official, I am using that for those days I am in no need to get up. How on Earth do you accidentally promise people children? Unless you're in the midst of marriage and discussing future offspring.

Well, the story goes that this witcher saved my father from a curse and though he didn't have any money to pay, the witcher asked for "what he had at home that he did not expect" or something like that? And my mother was pregnant with me, and he didn't know. Apparently it's how witchers gain apprentices. They let destiny decide.

That seems like a very literal stab in the dark at obtaining anything. An IOU doesn't work for these people?

I don't think they know what an IOU is...

You'd think in the whole era before capitalism kind of thing, they'd understand owing favours, instead of offering children accidentally.

Invoking the law of surprise is something not done too often, seemingly. It's just typical that it happened to my mother and it happened to me.

Give me capitalism. Wow, I never thought I'd say that.

Ah, how the dreams make us appreciate capitalism. At least it's not utterly common for people to just agree to things they have no idea they're agreeing to. 'Why yes, you can have the thing I don't know about at home' Oh what's that, my entire family is at home and I don't know, ah well, just given you all to a witcher.

It's a weird type of IOU system, that's for sure. The Witchers leave it six years and then come back to collect, usually, so they have to know it's normally tempting fate (or destiny, I guess) that they'll end up with a child.

Which seems like the perfect thing for a monster hunting warrior to have, doesn't it.

Definitely. "Come and collect your small child, take them away to be tortured and mutated into something everyone hates to hunt monsters for two hundred years or until they get eaten or lynch mobbed which is more likely"

I mean, at least the stories I'm getting from my dreams are interesting.

Jesus fuck, that's messed up on numerous levels.

Interesting in an intensely tragic way?

The number of levels this world is messed up in is unbelievable. The day I wake up from my dreams and am not horrified by the state of that world is going to be a dangerous day.

Quite.
