Things are different here. I sometimes miss Japan. Or speaking in Japanese. I grew up speaking both languages early on, but sometimes it hurts to translate things, still. Especially when trying to learn Latin for law school, too. I have note books comparing everything and I think I've got it.

I try not to use things like Google translate because it's not always accurate, you know?

...fifteen? I counted.

Yeah? I could? Really? I try not to sometimes in school but it's easy to forget.

I spent so much time in Japan, sometimes I still think in Japanese.

Miss that country.

Traveled around a bit, but settled for a time near Nagano.

Oh, okay! Cool. I'm from Kamakura, but it's a pretty small town. I usually say Tokyo, because mostly everyone knows that.

I think I understand this. I mean, I'm still learning a lot about the US, but yeah. It's just easier than trying to explain where Kamakura is every single time.

Oi oi oi we could totally switch. I'm kind of forgetting it, so it'd help to practice!

Don't forget! We can definitely speak in Japanese if that helps. Forgetting it would be awful.

It kinda comes back when I see my grandparents in the summer. But I don't use it enough in between, ya know? I don't want to get in trouble 😭

Man, I'm just glad there's a ton of English loan words. That definitely helps.

Google translate can cause more confusion than anything else. Especially when you're trying to do something for school.

I've been down that road a few times since Maman and I moved here.

Oh, yeah, Google translate is horrible. Have you ever translated then asked it to put it back into the original language? So not the same.

[info]princetamaki

It's not at all. Although it is fun sometimes to translate into two languages and then back to the original to see what it says.

It is; I agree! I don't know if I'd want to try that with Latin, though.

I think that's why Madre insisted we keep speaking Italian at home. So that I wouldn't miss speaking the language.

I'm willing to teach you some but I should probably warn you - I'd probably teach you the curse words first. It's what Will learned first from me anyway but then I wasn't trying to teach him actually. It just happened

Oh, really? I'd be in! I hear that you usually learn the swear words first. My teacher in high school taught us some of the curse words in English, because she wanted us to know if people were insulting us.

My grandparents never taught my parents, so I never got to learn myself. So while I can't say I miss speaking it, I still feel like ...I missed out on speaking it. If that makes any sense at all?

I feel there's a reason that Latin died out as a living language. The conjugation. Dear gods, the conjugation. I'm not saying that English is an easy language with it's own, I'm just saying that there doesn't need to be a different way to say every single word depending on it's usage.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]iamdeku

Oh, it does! I think it's all part of the culture, you know?

Maybe that's it. I have notebooks dedicated to conjugations. Vocabulary, everything. But, well, I kind of need to have a good understand for my law degree.

Yeah, that's it exactly! I'm thinking about taking some classes, if I can fit them in to all of my other classes. And maybe surprise my grandparents with it.

I'm going for law, too. I feel it's pretty much just us and doctors that have any use for Latin. I guess also people trying to write spooky scenes for horror movies, too, but it's not like their audiences are going to know what's they're saying anyway.

That's amazing! I think they would really appreciate that.

Oh, right! I didn't even think about horror stories actually using Latin. Maybe they do! I might have to look into that.

I think so, too. I'll have to look into it for next semester.

For all we know, maybe they're just using conjugation lists for those, themselves.

Who says you can't speak Japanese? When I'm home, my family speaks it almost exclusively. And we taught my best friend, so whenever we wanted to talk without anyone listening in at school we just switched to Japanese instead. Just because you're in California doesn't mean you only have to speak English. The great thing about the States is we don't have an official language.

And there's definitely a lot of us here that are bilingual. Some trilingual or more. So you definitely have a lot of people you can speak to in Japanese.
