Well that blind date was a monumental disaster.

Last time I let my receptionist set me up with one of her friends.

Christ almighty.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad and that your mom doesn't come to visit often.

Yeah, same to you about the estrangement. Definitely rougher than having a mom who hates LA.

Its mostly me. I worked for the ATF for a few years. It was hard going back to Colorado sometimes after some of the shit I'd seen. Like, Mom would ask me about my cases and sometimes I couldn't tell her about them because they were still going through the courts. When I could talk about them, I could tell they freaked her out, so I just kind of stopped. I learned pretty quickly that I don't have a lot in common with my parents.

Though family ain't always blood. Sometimes it's what you make of it. Doesn't mean it's any easier.

What do you do now?

Yeah, that's true. I moved around a lot back then, though. Kinda hard to make friends that way.

I do private security now.

I can see how that would be a thing. You more settled these days?

Nice, I'm a vet. Big change from doctor.

I'm getting there. I've got an apartment that's slowly looking like its lived in and I've met a few people. The county kind of insisted I did back in February when it tethered me to some poor dude.

What made you decide to become a vet?

Tethered?

After I left the military I didn't want to deal with people 'cause I don't like 'em all that much, animals are preferable.

It's a long story.

I can understand that. People can be assholes.

The sort of story you can share over drinks?

Not gonna argue there.

Yeah, having a few drinks in me while telling the begining part would probably be for the best.
