Cosima Niehaus doesn't talk about Clone Club ([info]geekmonkey) wrote in [info]valarnet,

Scientists have discovered a completely new species related to humans. I'm positively fascinated by this discovery. Analysis of the bone fragments they've found shows a relation to Australopithecus, more widely known as Lucy, as well as close relations to various Homo species, including Homo Sapiens. They've called this species Homo luzonensis, but as they haven't been able to extract DNA from the fossils they've found, they don't know where in the chain of evolution these relatives of ours fall.

I just really wish I could be in that lab right now. To study another close relative of ours that we previously didn't know existed? That's like a dream come true right there for me.

Oh that's extremely fascinating.

I know, right? And it's a slightly unexpected place to make such a discovery. I just wish that they were able to get some DNA to determine where in the chain of evolution they belong.

I wonder if there are more remains somewhere else. I mean, if there's these pieces there must be more somewhere, right?

There most likely are more remains, it just sort of needs to be luck of the draw by scientists to search in the right spot to find them. I mean, they're finding all sorts of extinct species in the tundra of Siberia right now, and finding amazing specimens of them. Who knows what remains of our own species and close relatives are yet to be discovered!

Hopefully they'll find more remains and get more information on all of this during our lifetime.

That would definitely be awesome to see!

Just how many human species are there?

There are eight, including this new one! Of course, we are the only surviving member of the Homo genus.

Have you ever heard of a homo sensorium?

No, can't say that I have. Why?

No real reason. It's just something I heard of from my dreams.

Ah. Judging by the name, it would seem as though it's another species related to humans. But not one that I've come across in this life.

In my dreams, they live secretly among humans.

That's highly interesting. Are you one of them or do you simply know about them? I mean, you don't have to tell me since it's like pretty personal. I'm just way too curious for my own good sometimes.

I am one of them. There's a government organization in the dreams that's trying to hunt us down, so in the dreams we need to stay hidden. I don't think they're here though.

I hope that they aren't here. Though I can relate to the being hunted thing. I'm a human clone, one of many, in my Dreams. The organization that created my sisters and I didn't like how we had minds of our own and deviated from their initial plans for us.

What, so they thought just because you were clones, you wouldn't think for yourselves? That's not very smart of them.

No, it was more like we ruined their experiment? At least for starters. They had this whole apparent nature vs nurture thing going. They wanted to know if people with identical genetics raised in completely different environments would be completely different individuals or if we'd have things in common. But some of us became self-aware and were fighting back. Long story short, they decided that we were obsolete and were trying to eliminate us since we were causing too much trouble for them.

It's a really complicated story, but my Dreams definitely have a heavy sci-fi nightmare vibe at times.

That sounds like it would have gotten them in all sorts of trouble with an ethics community somewhere if they'd been found out. The experiment in general, though especially the eliminating the subjects once they started doing things they didn't like.

I'm sorry you have to dream all of that.

Where do they keep finding these?

These particular remains were found on an island in the Philippines. Islands tend to harbor a lot of remains like this that go undiscovered due to islands typically being remote and hard to transport an entire excavation team to without knowing there was enough potential for something to be found to make it worthwhile.

So are they going to send a team now? To see what else is there?

They just might! I can't be sure since the article didn't say either way, but given what they found it stands to reason they'll go back and look more.
