Turns out Christmas isn't so bad when 90% of your family is on the other side of the country.

Or you spend it with people you actually live and not them.

I never said I didn't love them. It was just a nice respite.

You don't get along with your family?

It's more about being free to not concern myself with certain details.

Understandable. My family is also on the other side of the country and while I miss them, it's sometimes nice to be on my own.

It's nice to be responsible to no one else for a change, yes.

For once, I agree with you

I assumed you would miss everyone at home terribly.

Only a few of them.

I do admit to miss having mother around.

And it hasn't been terrible being on the same side of the country as my brother.

Too right. Mine are, all of them, in England and thank god for that.

I'm quite good at running, really. I'm a survivor, me, and sometimes 'survival' means knowing when to be elsewhere.

I want to say I can relate to that, but I suspect you might be running from a little more than an overbearing family situation.

Well no, you're close enough to the mark I'd say. Though I'm in a bit of a sticky situation at the moment, but that started right here in Orange County and isn't related.

You see, I'm a big, gigantic black sheep in my family and my brother, who took over my father's shipping empire, has decided I'm directly responsible for his death. So they stay over there, and I stay over here, where they can't judge me every day. And I get to be free. So fuck them.

Hm. My brother threatened me with revenge for a prank I pulled on Mischief Night and I am starting to wonder if he's feeding you lines. Because otherwise that is just uncanny.

...Except for the fact that my father is still alive

Sadly no, this really happened. You see, I came back from Uni with some piercings in places and a girlfriend, and my poor father had a heart attack about 3 days later. None of us are over it, but Raj does like to blame me for everything. I think mama goes along with it because it's easier than dealing with ... anything at all else, really.

Who's you're brother, then?

Maybe when I visit, I'll give your methods a try. Piercings and a girlfriend. I'll write that down.

My brother's name is Thor. He's the only member of my family out here, but it's been better than I expected. I'm Loki, by the way. You are?

Well, you might try piercings and a boyfriend in your case. Older families tend to hold on to certain bigoted ideas about things.

Ooo, Thor. One of my favorites here in Orange County, but you and I have never met. That's sad, don't you think? He's not putting me up to anything, though.

I'm Isabela.

I would surprise them either way.

Yes, my brother is dreadfully popular wherever he goes. I only moved here a short while ago.
