I spent several hours watching Curling both today and yesterday. It's actually quite engrossing and once you understand the rules, exciting to watch.

Well those are words I thought I'd never say about such an odd sport.

I tried watching it and I had no idea what was going on.

They want to try and get it in the middle, but knock their opponents out?

Pretty much. Think of it like shuffleboard mixed with darts. They have to push the stone towards that area of concentric circles, and the one with the stone left closest to the bullseye wins. I'm still unsure about the scoring aspect, however. Is it just the one stone that counts or however many the winning team has left on the "house" (the circles)? Not sure.

Sadly I don't know too much about shuffleboard or darts either!

Do you think there's an arena around here that offers curling lessons? That might be fun.

Well then there's always Wikipedia. That's how I learned what I could about the sport, besides the commentators explaining bits.

I don't know, but that's a really good idea. I'll look into it.

If they don't already do it, they need to do an Olympics 101 right before the games start. Go over how they score and stuff so we can feel like legit commentators when we watch!

Lemme know what you find! It would be fun to give it a go, just for fun.

By far my favourite part of curling this year was this guy. An inspiration to us all.

LOL that seems like something Tony would do at the Games.

This Tony guy sounds like my kinda man. It's pretty much the only way to watch any sporting event, let alone something like the Olympics.

So I've discovered the few times I've attended such events.

I rarely get a chance to watch the Olympics, though I will be cheering for Britain in the bronze medal match.

The time difference does not help. A lot of events are early morning.

I take it you're from Great Britain, or just a fan of the team?

No, that certainly doesn't help at all. Though most years I have been at sea and haven't had a chance to watch.

I am. It's always a pleasure to watch ones own country during these events.

That must have been difficult, if you're a huge fan of particular sports.

Indeed it is. Watching the Summer Olympics is more of my thing, as the country of my birth participates. So I rarely watch the Winter Olympics, but everyone seemed to be making a big deal about curling this time around.

I cannot say I mind overmuch. Watching such accomplished athletes is certainly satisfying, but I never have been much one for sports.

Curling does seem to be uncommonly popular this year. What's your birth country, if you do not mind my asking?

Same here. Again, the Summer Olympics tend to be it for me.

I'm from the Republic of Congo.

What's your favourite event?

I've never been to the Republic of Congo myself. When did you move to America?

Really? It seemed to be the butt of jokes for a while, but now everyone seems to be taking it more seriously. Curiosity simply got the better of me and now I can't stop watching.

Well I'm British so I think we've always enjoyed it a little more. But it's totally addictive watching.

So this is something popular in the UK then?

It really is. When you actually know what's going on it's all the better.

Fairly yeah. I mean it always gets more popular around the Winter Olympics. But it's well known.

Oh absolutely. There's more skill in it than people think.

Interesting.

Indeed. One commentator called it "Chess on ice".

It is confusing without knowing the rules. Or what the terminologies mean. I still can't make out what they're shouting at one another, however.

Don't forget the sliding a stone across ice part.

It was invented by the Scots. Same people who brought the world the sport of Golf.

Still, it's cleaning as a sport. To think, I've been in training for the Olympics since I was a kid and didn't even know it!

Along with the funny hats with pom poms on top. And sheep stomach.

You could also download the NBC Sports App. It's what I used to watch some of the matches. It streams them live, you can rewatch them in their entirety or skip to whichever End you want to see. Or just watch the highlights.
