Well I had a weird dream last night. Not sure if it’s one of those dreams people get here, but I guess we’ll see. I was a skeleton - but not a human skeleton. A monster skeleton. Not a dead monster, they...dissolve, I guess, into dust. Just a skeleton. Making skele-puns. And all of us monsters lived underground, because we were banished there by the humans and sealed down there. Nothing could get out.
The barrier keeping us trapped required enormous power to get through, and even more power to break. The power of seven human souls. ‘Cause it turns out, human souls are more powerful than monster souls. Humans have something called determination in them, or DT, something that makes their souls extra powerful. They stick around for a bit after they die, and they can be captured. And we’d need the determination and power of seven human souls to get the job done. The soul of every monster in the Underground would actually be less than a human soul. Kind of depressing. So we made our peace with our life in the Underground ‘cause there was no way for us to go out and get humans, and we thought that there wasn’t anyway in.
But then one day, a human fell into the Underground. The prince, Asriel, found them. Chara. That was their name. They became part of the royal family, they gave the entire Underground hope that there might be peace one day, between humans and monsters. We left the home we'd established to explore a little more, people settled down all throughout it, things were great.
And then Chara died. And Asriel took their soul and used it to cross the barrier and take them to their village, and he was attacked and killed. The queen left, the king vowed war against the humans and started collecting souls, all hope was lost. Etc.
That’s how the story went, anyway. I wasn’t there for that. I was there for the royal scientist, Gaster, to hire me on as help for his experiments, along with a girl named Alphys. They have theories that if you could extract enough DT from somewhere then maybe you could inject it into a monster, and their soul would be powerful enough to break the barrier. Doesn’t seem plausible to me but we’re just working on the theory right now, we’ve got designs for the DT extraction machine but we still need to build it and get it working.
Even if this doesn’t turn out to be one of those dreams, I think it’s still a nice bedtime story for Pap. Especially since he’s in it. He recently met the captain of the Royal Guard and now wants to be her. Not entirely sure she's too enthusiastic about it, but hey, my bro's got enough enthusiasm for everyone. I'll have to cut out some of it, though, and give it a happy ending. How do you think the monsters should get out of the Underground without, y’know, us having to kill a bunch of people?
