It is nice to wake up and find, for once, my dreams have given me something that is not dirt and that will not inflict harm. Though I admit I have little use for fifteenth century fashion or a sword, but they are finely made so perhaps I will find a place to display the sword.

I do think there are several on this network who have received such a gift, yes?

Okay. That sounds absolutely---

But why though?

I fear it is a rather involved story.

I have no doubt you could, Mr Harker.

I'm flattered that you think so highly of my intellectual prowess.

That still doesn't explain the dirt though.

Do you believe at all in superstitions, I wonder?

Not usually. But our brains are hard-wired to believe nonsense, no matter how hard we try not to sometimes.

When I dream, I am a creature of superstition. Because of this, I may only find rest surrounded by earth from my home, which, in my dreams, is Transylvania near the Borgo Pass. So now in my waking world I am also near home.

What kind of creature of superstition?

Though the Borgo Pass is a bit telling.

A very solitary creature, if anything. To put a name to it feels to debase the nature of it.

The nature which is more animal than human?

Yes. Though there was never much humanity before that, either.

Why would you think that?

I dream of being Vlad Tępęs.

Dreams have a strange way of blurring into reality. While I most certainly lack of bloodlust, who can say for certain.

I suspect you mean these dreams have a way of blurring into reality. Because for the most part, for most people, they remain simply dreams - whatever hidden meaning people believe they possess, if any.

Vlad Tępęs dipped bread into the blood of his victims. That is not going to be you.

Your faith in me is flattering, Mr Harker. I suspect your views will change in time.

The Vlad I dream of now lacks the cruelty of his namesake. His advance against the turks is done far more selflessly than history would suggest, but he knows he has made himself a monster. Awareness of the condition subdues the more disagreeable traits.

It just doesn't make sense. Romanians generally don't like to fully acknowledge how insane he was, since it speaks to the darker parts of their history, but. I don't see why history would repeat itself.

Even monsters can feel remorse, I suppose.

I do find it a strange thing. Growing up, I was taught of him being a hero. He did much to defend the empire and his homeland, and so to dream of his deeds then being twisted is curious to me. I admire his ruthlessness.

But it seems I am more likely to become the monster than the man. Or at the very least, the superstition.

It is strange, but interesting. He usually sided with the poor, and some make the argument that his victims were mostly attacking Turks. But it's more about the pleasure he apparently seemed to derive from torture. And eating and drinking in the company of dead bodies. I hope you keep better company for your meals, personally.

Do you believe you possess no control at all?

You are welcome to discover for yourself

I am remarkably in control. I suppose I am lucky that I haven't experienced any urges, but I know what I am and what may lay in my future. That does much to calm the mind.

Few can say they really know what they are. If you do then that's an advantage.

Seeing this version of yourself doesn't make you afraid of what may lay in your future?

To fear something is to give it power, is it not?

Depends. Sometimes fear keeps you alive.
