Faramir doesn't believe the darkness will endure. ([info]without_glory) wrote in [info]valarnet,

Hello, I'm Faramir. My older brother, Boromir, has already posted an introduction, earlier today. I've been on the network for only a little while, but I've been quiet. I prefer books and reading, rather than the public limelight. I'll leave that to Boromir, instead. I can assure you all that he's a person of good character and that he means well, and that he will make for an excellent representative should he be elected.

As for myself, I'm currently a community college teacher (philosophy, poetry) at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. I teach three days a week and volunteer for my brother's campaign, as well as various other causes.

I'm afraid I'm not as interesting as my brother is. I simply thought it would be rude to continue lurking on the network and never post anything.

Come now, you're interesting enough! And single, for any ladies who might be peeking in. I know of no man more gentle and kind, even if he is frustratingly liberal.

That is usually a matter of perspective and you are biased, because we are related. Thank you as well for the kind words.

Ladies, please note that my brother is noble, loyal, and steadfast, and is also in need of companionship.

What type of poetry do you like?

I like all forms, actually. I do have my favorites, such as 'The Happiest Heart' written by an American poet, John Vance Cheney:

Who drives the horses of the sun
Shall lord it but a day.
Better the lowly deed were done,
And kept the humble way.

The rust will find the sword of fame;
The dust will hide the crown,
Aye, none shall nail so high his name
Time will not tear it down.

The happiest heart that ever beat
Was in some quiet breast
That found the common daylight sweet
And left to Heaven the rest.

That's only one example out of many. Do you like poetry, also?

I've been trying to figure out what to study in college. I really have no idea! Poetry sounds really great! I mean, the reading part. Not the writing part. Definitely not writing for me!

It helps if you have things you love to do as hobbies and can further expand them into that which you have a desire to study, followed by something which is job worthy. I had a great love of reading and writing, so the decision seemed a natural one.

Poetry is quickly becoming a lost form of art. If you really don't like writing, I might suggest that you start with an intro course. There's a lot of writing papers involved, when delving into the meaning of the poems. I've also considered it as an online course, which means there would be more writing involved.

What college are you enrolling in?

I love reading. Is there a job where they can pay me to read? Or look at art all day? Those are my favorite things.

Maybe Art History?

Papers I could likely do. And talking about the meanings of the poems... but I don't think I could write a poem. It feels like it'd be a slap in the face to ee cummings or Emily Dickenson if I did.

I haven't quite decided? Probably the nearest community college.

True and I know there's not anything wrong with it. On one hand, I can only speak for myself, in so much as I thought it wouldn't be right if I continued reading and not contributing. On the other hand, it is a social network and, to my thinking, it defeats the purpose of being social if I'm signed up and not doing so.

I didn't catch your name (I suppose it's listed in your valar net profile?), but it's a pleasure to meet you. A favorite is one that I posted in a comment, above, which can be found here, but I'm happy to post another, by William Blake:

Awake, awake, my little boy!
Thou wast thy mother's only joy;
Why dost thou weep in thy gentle sleep?
Awake! thy father does thee keep.

'O, what land is the Land of Dreams?
What are its mountains, and what are its streams?
O father! I saw my mother there,
Among the lilies by waters fair.

'Among the lambs, cloth?d in white,
She walk'd with her Thomas in sweet delight.
I wept for joy, like a dove I mourn;
O! when shall I again return?'

Dear child, I also by pleasant streams
Have wander'd all night in the Land of Dreams;
But tho' calm and warm the waters wide,
I could not get to the other side.

'Father, O father! what do we here
In this land of unbelief and fear?
The Land of Dreams is better far
Above the light of the morning star.'

I have far too many favorite poets to ever possibly list, in one place. For starters? Szymborska, Sexton, Eliot, Cummings, Angelou, Frost, Blake, Neruda, Patten, Dickenson, Whitman, Plath, Parker...so many poems, written and translated from other languages, from the hands of countless other poets, all from various points in time.

I honestly can't say that I haven't run into a poem or poet that I haven't liked, even when the content is dark or questionable. Each one is unique in it's wording, and presents or conveys their own unique point of view. Art, in all of it's innumerable forms, is always subjective.

Sorry, Ellie's my name. Ellie Bartowski. I should have mentioned it.

I actually took a class on Baudelaire in college. Les Fleurs Du Mal. That's about as far as I delved into the realm of poetry, though I have to admit that everything you've linked here is wonderful.

I remember my father used to recite a poem while he worked about the gold rush in Alaska...? The Creamation of Sam McGee? It always made me smile.
