Mary Poppins is Practically Perfect in Every Way ([info]prac_perfect) wrote in [info]valarnet,

I have been fortunate enough to find a nice job at a local elementary school here in Anaheim. I'm currently teaching 5th grade and while most of my students are wonderful, I cannot believe the behavior some of them show! I've been a nanny in the past and have never allowed any of my charges, regardless of their age, to utter a word of vulgarity! I can only imagine these children pick it up from home or their schoolmates, but why must they be taught these words at such a young age?

And don't even get me started on their use of technology. Is it really necessary for a ten year old to have an iPhone that they try and sneak texts during class? Who are they texting??

I've only ever had a couple of students swear in class, but then again I teach third grade. And only a few of them have cell phones, but it's mostly the ones who take part in after school programs.

Well, for after school programs I can understand. If they need to reach their parents having a cell phone is a good way. But using them in class to text heaven knows who!

Where do you teach?

I teach at Deerfield Elementary.

Wait, I teach there as well! What are the chances?

I'm Mary Poppins. I teach 5th grade!

That's amazing. You're only just down the hall then. How have we not met until now?

Wait, just down the hall?

Are you Mr. Williams? Rory Williams? We haven't officially met, but I may have waved at you a time or two. I just started and I must admit, have not gotten about to meeting my fellow professors!

Drop by sometime after school. I know I'm here relatively late.

Oh how wonderful. I've just started teacher training and I cannot wait to be in a classroom.

Sounds like you have a few problem children though. It does seem that respect isn't taught to many children now.

Have you really? That's wonderful! We need more promising teachers! Where will you be residing?

Unfortunately true, although I'm sure every classroom has them.

And you're right. Another unfortunate fact, but I hope we as educators can help with that.

Indeed I have. Thank you. I'll be studying at UC Irvine - I've yet to find out where my first school placement will be.

Oh I have no doubt. Hopefully you can still get through to them and curb that rebellious streak into something more promising.

Oh I am sure you will. It is just a shame that the majority of the responsibility for it will rest with you when really it should start with the parents.

Let me know as soon as you find out! I hope it's at my school!

I hope for that as well. It's upsetting because I agree with your other point, that it should start with the parents. Sadly, sometimes we're all the children have in that regard. But hopefully we can find something we have in common with the kids and build upon that.

Oh I will. That would be lovely, I do hope it is.

Yes that is true. It sounds to me that they are lucky if they have you as a teacher.

Thank you, that was very kind of you to say! I strive to be a good role model for all my students and I hope down the line they'll appreciate it. =)

I did forget to ask, are you seeking your elementary or secondary teaching credential?

I am absolutely sure you will succeed and they will remember you as a very special teacher.

Oh, elementary. I do so love the imagination of younger children.

You're so nice Glinda. I know who to go to if I ever have a bad day at work!

I quite agree! They're so young and innocent, it helps shape their minds and think of the impossible! Any grade in particular you want to teach?

Thank you. And please feel free, I have been told I am good at cheering people up.

That's exactly it. I think maybe the second or third grade but I'm not really set on any in particular yet.

You certainly have a talent for it! I thought I had a positive spin on things, but you must be a step or two above me!

I just met a fellow teacher at my school who teaches third grade. I suppose with elementary it could be any grade, but I know there are preferences with the children.

I just figure there's no reason to be sad or grumpy, a smile goes a lot further for you and those around you.

I've come across a whole range of ages at the children's ward of the hospital, but since I've never taught them before maybe I'll discover my preference when I start my first placement.

I can already tell what a wonderful professor you will make! Just keep that upbeat attitude and it will rub off on your students!

Again, please let me know when you find out! I hope it's Deerfield Elementary! That's my current residence.

That would be nice. I'd like a happy classroom.

I definitely will and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed too! :)

My daughter is 11. She keeps trying to get me to let her take her cell phone--that her mother bought for her--to school. It's a constant battle in my house.

I can understand the use of a phone for emergency purposes or for after school, but during the lessons? Especially children that young!

I'm sorry you have to go through that with your daughter, but I must admit, I stand on your side.

It's good to know that the professionals agree with me. I'll let her know I'm not the only one who thinks an eleven year old doesn't need a phone twenty-four seven.

Unfortunately that may not even sway your daughter. Although I must agree with you, that it gives me a peace of mind to know there are parents out there that are at least trying to put some sense into their children.

How rebellious these children have gotten.

No such thing. I remember a time before cell phones. At least when they were big and clunky.
