When someone says "Hey, I hear Iran is nice this time of year" it's best to ignore the attempt to get you to say "Oh, really?." It's a not-so nice way of saying that's where you'll spend a month of your life.

Sometimes I love my job. And sometimes I spend a week vacuuming up sand. I think there's still sand in my boots.

Anyways, someone at work gave me this group's address and so, here I am.

Iran is always nice. If you like desert climates, which I do, therefore Iran is always nice.

Iran is beautiful. And I love the climate. But I am not a huge sand-in-my-boots for months girl. It might be my only major pet peeve.

And a pretty valid one. Garrus Vakarian.

Thanks. Sigrun Gard. A pleasure

I'd like to get some sand in my boots. And there must be some beautiful archaeology sites in Iran to explore.

There are many, many archaeology sites in Iran. Not that you can get to them.

That's the pity. some day.

They are rather guarded sites, a shame really. I bet there are some interesting history lessons to be learned from them.

I suppose it's better to start out with smaller finds anyway.

Generally smaller starts are better. Generally.

I suppose that could be true.

Sometimes you have to have a gut for something. And my gut is telling me to take a risk on something. I might just do that.

My gut is telling me to not condone anything that potentially breaks laws. Not that my job applies to Civilian laws, but as a general advisory.

Personally, I always trust my gut, and find that those who do enjoy their lives so much more.

Nothing illegally dangerous! Do you know how many laws I'll have to research for any dig I want to do?

I'm Lara, by the way. I'm aspiring to dig in the dirt.

Quite a few, actually. Strangely enough they were part of my education - the laws that is.

A pleasure, I am Sigrun. I hunt people down who hide in the sand thinking they'll escape military justice... am a Military Police officer, no aspiring here, been here too long for that!

You don't want a promotion?

I have had quite a few. I have no desire for the responsibilities of those that are above me. I am 1st Sergeant, the only routes above me are Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, then the various Warrant and Commissioned officers.

I enjoy field and dirty work too much to be behind a desk all day. I had to fight tooth and nail to keep doing the work I do as it was but I've been in too long for them to have not promoted me this far.

I can't disagree. I'd never want to be stuck in a museum like my father.

Besides, I'm pretty sure if I got stuck behind a desk all day I'd eat my weight in donuts and taco bell, or something equally as awful for me.

Did you bring back any treats from there that you don't mind sharing with a desert native?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]thedistantone
2013-08-28 09:55 pm UTC (link)
Depends. I have a literal boat load of genuine Iranian sand. Some food that I am fond of but am willing to share and more sand.

It's a funny thing to miss, but the sand out there is different from the desert sand out here. I wouldn't, actually, mind a bottle of it.

You're welcome to all the sand you can take.

One of the things I miss most I think from my home country, aside from the coffee Siam would brew at the campfire, is the sugared almonds.

I could probably find them around here somewhere, I don't know why I didn't think about that until now.

But I would happily take some of your sand.

I am a big fan of sugared almonds. They are delightful. If I brought any back they'd not have survived long, I fear.

I'm sure you could, actually.

Have at. There's literally a mini sand dune going on on my patio right now, a month means I collected a lot in my shoes. In my bags. Goodness.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]fortheliving
2013-08-29 02:29 pm UTC (link)
Of course. And they're so tasty that I'm not sure I would ask you to share them, even had they survived the trip.

I think I stopped noticing how pernicious the sand was after a while. It would get into everything, but that was the only life I knew for quite some time.

I might have a hard time letting them go, might be the only enjoyable part to that work trip was the sugared almonds.

When I was living in Afghanistan for a tour, I got used to the sand, too. I understand.

Afghanistan is actually my home country. But it is not that far away from Iran that they don't share some similarities.

Neighboring countries often share many similarities. I cannot really comment on how I liked or did not like Afghanistan. I had a very biased view of it.

That's understandable. It's a country whose strife has been featured in the global theatre, and troops from this country have been made to suffer in its name.

I may call the place home, but I am not unaware of its many problems.

Still, there are things about my time there that I miss.

After years of being bounced between hot climates, I can manage to survive the heat. The sand... well I do not think I shall ever deal with that as well.

I prefer a more temperate climate or cool. But then that may well come from living in England for so long.

I'm not sure many people can claim to deal with sand very well. It is tiresome stuff.

I grew up here, but my parents are from Norway, we spent time there on breaks, so I get that temperate climate desire.

You have to be raised in it to not mind it getting evey where, I think.

Norway. My parents are both from there. It is lovely. I am glad I have seen it.

I think so, too.
