Carol floated back down to the earth, and slipped back inside the window. She hadn’t broken it, at least. It had already been open when she’d shot out of it, and now she was a bit sheepish at her sudden exit. She’d probably freaked her girlfriend out. She grabbed for a robe off of the chair as she landed.
“..Jess?”
Why yes, she’d freaked out her girlfriend. She had been asleep next to her when Carol had taken off like a shot. Jess didn’t know what the hell happened, and she’d been worried ever since. Lots of pacing and calling people. Though she didn’t know who to talk to because she didn’t know what happened.
“What the hell was that?” she yelled when Carol finally came in. Jess didn’t look happy.
She grinned at Jess. “That was ...that was me. That was me!” She held up her hands, which glowed with unspent energy before fading. “All this power, Jess.... It’s..dizzying. It’s like there’s a star inside my chest. I just went to space. On my own!”
“Jesus, you scared the living shit out of me, Carol.” Wow, that was certainly impressive. “Seriously? You were in space? That’s.. crazy.” Honestly Jess didn’t know what to say about all of this that happened. Other than that she didn’t have any of that. She was so far behind everyone she was supposed to be close to.
"Yeah..." She pumped her fists in the air, and then wrapped her arms around Jess. "It was amazing. Do you want to go flying with me? I won't drop you, I promise I won't. I want to share this with you."
She didn't really care that Jess might be behind her. She didn't view it that way. Carol loved her, and just wanted to share every part of herself.
Jess squeaked a bit in surprise. Okay so she was jealous. That was it. The big J word. “Flying? No, no thanks.” She gave her a smile though and squeezed her in return. “Flying is just not my thing.” For now anyway, until it happened to her perhaps one day.
Carol bit back her disappointment, and ran her hands down Jess's back. They were warm and comforting. "Some day, maybe? We could make love in the clouds."
She winked, and hugged Jess against her carefully.
She gave a nod and smiled again. “Yeah some day maybe. Once I stop being afraid and I get.. used to all of this. It’s a little much to take in. I know that you’re excited. I don’t mean to downplay that. Honest.” Jess just needed to figure out her role in all this.
"...Does it scare you?" Carol didn't mean the flight. She knew Jess was afraid of flying, but she was worried that it was too much, too quickly for her best friend to process. "I don't want... I'm still me."
Jess shook her head. “No, I’m not scared. I’m happy for you. I think it’s awesome. I know you’re still you. I just.. what if it doesn’t happen for me? What if I’m just me and I don’t get.. any powers. They’re just dreams but now they’re real and I .. it freaks me out. I’m sorry.”
"Do you want your powers?" Carol stroked her fingers down her cheek. "I know you don't want the pheramones." But if she could fly with her, Carol would be ecstatic. She didn't know if that power would ever manifest for Jess. But it would be nice.
That was a question that she wasn’t quite sure how to answer. “I do but I don’t. I mean I zap people and I can stick to things and I’ve got the pheremones. It’s just.. doesn’t that make us someone else? We’re going to be different people from this point on, whether we say we are or not. Y’know?”
“I think we’re still who we are deep inside. In our hearts.” She pressed her forehead against Jess’s. “You’re still Jess. You’re still funny and intelligent, you’re still determined to find a cure for a horribly disease. We’re just ....there’s new things. It doesn’t have to change us that much.”
Jess kissed the top of Carol’s head and squeezed her tight. “It doesn’t? You can fly and you’re indestructible. I think that changes .. everything. I just don’t want to turn into someone else. But one day, I’ll go flying with you. I promise.”
"Jess..." Carol rested her face in Jess's shoulder. " I don't things to change. Not between us. I want to be your Carol. I want you to be my Jess."
She rubbed Carol’s back gently and kissed her neck. “Neither do I. I want to be us. You’re always going to be my best friend. I’ll always love you. Even if we’re both.. different.”
“We made it through cancer and a plane crash when we first met, Jess. We’ll make it through this. I’ll always be a flygirl, you know.” She winked.
That made her laugh a little. “Okay, you’re right. I know I’m worrying about nothing.” She couldn’t help it though. Jess just shook her head and snorted in amusement. “All right, why don’t we go outside and you show me what else you can do.”
Carol grinned, and took Jess's hand, leading her outside, the normal way. "I can make my own fireworks." Once they were outside, she fired off a few energy blasts at the sky. The feeling was so euphoric that she laughed, her happiness etched on her face.
Following Carol outside, Jess smirked a bit as she watched the energy blasts. “Oh that’s kind of like what I have. I mean in my dreams anyway.” She didn’t think she could do things like that. But it looked like fun. Well unless you were blasting someone in the face. “Guess we’ll have an amazing fourth of July. Even though I’m British.”
“What about Guy Fawkes day?” She turned to smile at Jess. There were nights she could just listen to the woman talk. For hours. It was enough to make her knees week.
“We can certainly set off fireworks, though I’m not sure about burning effigies. That seems a bit too much for me.” At least she hadn’t been a fan of it when she was little. Jess always laughed when Carol wanted to listen to her talk.
“Depends on the effigies.” Carol grinned at her. “Sometimes setting things on fire is a lot of fun.” She looked up at the sun, now fully risen, and seemed to radiate a kind of joy. Jess might worry that they’ve changed, but Carol felt like she’d come home again.
“Sure, I guess so. I mean if it was someone you really despised. It’s slightly creepy if you make it look like someone though.” Jess laughed. Wow she was tired, thanks to no sleep. She was just happy that Carol was okay. And their house.
“I’m sorry I woke you up. I just...woke up and had to get outside...” She picked Jess up, damsel style, and started to float back into the apartment with her. She was so full of energy. “I have some ideas on how I could lull you back to sleep. How about a massage? My hands can do that warming thing now.”
“It’s okay, don’t worry about it. Just glad you’re okay.” She laughed and put her arms around Carol’s neck as they went back inside. “Oh I like the sound of that. By all means, put me to sleep.”
Carol’s tongue flicked against Jess’s ear, and she whispered huskily. “I hope you’re looking forward to a happy ending.”
