Clipping the laminated pass to his shirt that had been waiting for him at the will-call station, Robb followed the well-worn dirt footpath from the Zoo's main entrance toward his first destination of the afternoon. He'd come here today not only drop off paperwork necessary for inching Weir that much closer toward becoming part of a program set in place to protect endangered animals, but to meet with the Zoo's breeding liaison and to have a tour of the facilities.
Robb was curious, obviously, and more than a little excited to make the trip over from the Anaheim film studio where he worked and have a look around. Animals - big and small, furred, feathered or scaled - had always been such a huge part of his life, even back when he was an island boy on Arran, so to be able to speak with someone so knowledgeable in the field, and get up close and personal with such exotic creatures was like a child's dream come true for Robb.
Just as Abby had told him in her email, the reptile house where they were to meet was up around the bend. A low-slung building, painted a muted olive green and blending seamlessly into the terrain, reminded him very much of a lizard on a tree branch.
Once he'd stepped through the entrance, and the glass door whispered shut behind him, Robb was instantly transported to another world. Cool and dark, the air was more humid than outside, but not uncomfortably so; a gentle reminder that you were now in their domain.
Still a few minutes early for his appointment, he decided to take a peek at the row of enclosed glass viewing areas set into the wall. Smaller, but not necessarily less dangerous snakes and other cold-blooded amphibians resided inside miniature, controlled ecosystems.
Folder firmly held in hands clasped behind his back, Robb gave a quick read of the description posted on a little placard on the wall beside a window opening before turning his attention to the Red-eared slider turtle slipping off its rock and into a small pool.
