When: Now
Where: A cemetery in AZ
Rating/Warnings: Probably low, may reach PG-13 levels
It happened.
His first dream.
He knew it was different from an average dream from its tangible edges as he experienced it. From the vibrant way it solidified into a foundation of a memory upon waking, instead of the quick fade into morning ash all his other dreams vanished into.
And from the hollow ache in his chest this dream had carved with his emotions.
He’d had dreams before that had been intense enough to leave him with the remnants of his dream-inspired emotions the next morning. But nothing like this- it took him a moment to catch his breath.
He called into work and took the day and the next off. Then grabbed his things and left for the airport. He boarded the first flight to Phoenix. By midday he was waiting in line at his destination for a rental. And then it was another two hours’ drive to the cemetery.
This was only the third time he had visited his mother’s grave. Grass was growing evenly now, but it had been months since the last time he’d been here. This plot was expensive, but something about the lawn-less cemeteries had not seemed right to him or Cleigg. The headstone looked right, now, surrounded by the grass.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Cleigg had said his mother had picked out that verse herself.
Anakin stood, tracing a single finger through each letter of the epitaph written above his mother’s name and her dates of living. Each letter was another test to discover what was real- this memory of this emotion of this life chiseled sharply in stone, or the new memory of another life pounding a different memory of a different loss into his chest?
He didn’t know how he knew it but Ahsoka was on her way.
He just stood there, waiting. Waiting for what was real.
