Pressing the button on the side of her phone, Mary checked the clock for the dozenth time in the past half-hour. Every minute that passed without the arrival of her coffee date made her more anxious. Then again, it could have been the coffee she had been drinking. Instead of slowly nursing her very large cup, she had been taking long, angry gulps. Mary was steadily reaching the bottom, which meant that she had to make a choice: either grab another cup to wait it out a little longer, or leave. A part of her wanted to stay, not to give the guy a chance, but to ask him frankly what kind of impression he expected to make in being so late. But such a confrontation was dependent on him actually showing, and Mary was certain that wasn’t about to happen. Her feelings weren’t hurt by that certainty. Accepting the blind date had been a sort of kindness, an effort on her part to make friends at her job. Janine, a woman who sat at a neighboring cubicle, had somehow come to the conclusion that Mary needed to “get out” and date more. No arguments or explanation to the contrary were heard, so instead of fighting it, Mary decided to indulge Janine, just once. Being stood up was exactly the outcome she needed to keep the other woman at bay; that being said, Mary was not fond of wasting her time.
With a sigh of audible exasperation, she lifted her cup and downed the rest of the coffee that remained. Mary stood from her table and, deciding it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to take a coffee back to the office, entered the line that had assembled since her arrival.
