Caroline was so over dreaming about being pregnant. That seemed to be all she was up to these days. Hell she even had a baby shower which was just plain weird. It wasn’t like she would need any of the items. It would all go to Alaric along with the twins. But she was determined to be the best magical surrogate she could be and give Alaric two healthy babies even though she knew it was going to be difficult for her to give them up. And now apparently the babies were siphoning her magical vampire blood because it tasted good for whatever reason? That was just strange and it was making her start to desiccate. Thank god she wasn’t actually pregnant with those twins that was not something she wanted to live through.
Valerie put some magical bracelet on her and it worked. The babies seemed to feed on that instead. But it didn’t work for long. First her leg started to desiccate and then her arm, she couldn’t reach for the phone. And Caroline actually felt it. It wasn’t just her dream self experiencing the desiccation. She could feel her arms and legs getting tight all the sudden. And cold. Like they were made of ice.
She woke up and with a start. “Ow,” Caroline cried out without even realizing it. Then she tried to lift her arm, it wouldn’t move, she looked over at it, it was grey and all veiny. She was desiccating for real. That caused her to scream.
That cry woke Peeta up and he came up thrashing just slightly because he was afraid that something awful was happening. Which was completely correct because he turned to see his girlfriend changing. It wasn’t something he had ever seen before and his mind couldn’t truly wrap around it. She was turning into something grey and her veins were incredibly pronounced. It had to be something from the dreams, but he wasn’t sure what it meant. It couldn’t be good though. “Oh god, Caroline? What’s happening?” he at least had the sense of mind to not ask if she was okay.
“I’m desiccating,” she yelped out in pain. She wasn’t sure if Peeta would remember what that meant. It was something she had only briefly mentioned once. What would happen to her if she went too long without feeding. Blood! That had to help right? It wasn’t like there were literally feeding on her own blood. So if she drank she had to heal. “I need blood,” she breathed out through the pain. “I can’t move.” As in Peeta go get a blood bag.
Desiccation. Yep, he was racking his brain on that one. It suddenly made sense and he remembered her talking about how it happened to vampires from time to time. It didn’t click right away that it was blood related until she told him to get the blood bags. “Shit, okay, be right back,” he informed her as he threw off the sheets and got out of bed to run to the kitchen to grab a handful of her blood bags and brought them back to her. He started unwrapping them and placed the end of the line into her mouth and hoped she could still work those muscles.
Caroline sucked in the blood, downing the whole bag in one long gulp. But nothing. The desiccation wasn’t going away. In fact it was getting worse. She could feel it moving farther up her leg. Another cry of pain escaped her lips. What would work? She tried to remember her dream. Valerie had siphoned it out then it came back and she made Caroline that bracelet that had worked for longer. There was no Valerie here though. And no siphoners that Caroline knew of. Another cry of pain. There had to be something. Some type of magic. “Call Regina,” was all she could manage to get out. Hopefully she could help.
Watching his girlfriend in pain was one of the worst things he had to experience and that was something given his dreams. But this was just so awful and he couldn’t do anything about it since he had no supernatural powers of his own to help her. Damn it. He couldn’t take her crying out in pain and he wished he could think of something, but luckily Caroline told him to call Regina. He shuffled the bed a bit to find her phone and quickly scrolled through until he found Regina and pressed send, holding it to his ear, as he reached to take her hand in his.
By now Regina learned to keep her phone’s ringtone on the highest volume possible, knowing damn well how things had the ability to bleed over in the middle of the night - perhaps somewhat might think she was a bit paranoid, but after having Killian get sucked into the vortex of evil and then transformed into the Dark One long before the sun peeked out, she thought it best to be available at all times should another devastating crisis hit.
Such was the sadistic way of this hellhole known as home.
Though she’d also argue that the ringtone was too loud. Some generic phone sound that jolted her awake, dusky eyes snapping open. Tonight she was alone; no Henry, no pirate, and while she half-expected another Storybrooke emergency from the fairytale crew, she was surprised to see Caroline’s picture and name light up her cell.
“Caroline?” A sleepy murr, but she was waking up more. “Caroline, what’s wrong?”
Caroline couldn’t exactly grasp Peeta’s hand. She couldn’t move her fingers or her entire arm. But the gesture was appreciated and she managed a pained smile at him.
Even though the phone was to his ear she could still hear Regina answer. Perks of vampire hearing. “I need help,” Caroline called out as loudly as she could manage so Regina could hopefully hear her. “Desiccating,” she added looking at Peeta with pleading eyes to help explain.
It didn’t matter that she couldn’t squeeze his hand, but he wanted her to know that he was here. He had lowered the phone slightly so that Caroline didn’t need to yell into phone and let out a sigh as she could hear the pain in her voice. “Regina? It’s Peeta. It’s a vampire thing where she’s basically drying out and we’re not sure why. We tried blood and it didn’t revive the parts of her that are desiccating the most. I think it might be magic involved. Would you be able to come over as soon as possible?”
No need to rub the sleep out of her eyes, the sense of urgency on the other side of the phone did that fairly well for her. Blankets kicked off, cell balanced between her ear and shoulder, she ripped a robe from a hook on her closet to pull on. “I’ll be there in a second,” she sternly responded - and that wasn’t an exaggeration.
Almost two years of mastering her brand of magic, Regina had tested the range on her teleportation prowess well and it was decent. Perhaps not something she could use to, say, to the other side of the state, but anything within the confines of the OC seemed easy to get to with a puff of violet smoke swirling her away from her own private chambers and elsewhere - the apartment Caroline shared with Peeta, right in their bedroom.
“What the hell,” was how she greeted them. Pushing some of that disheveled raven hair behind her ears, she approached the bed to witness the phenomenon. Vampire Barbie’s limbs going grey, like she was being mummified, and it wasn’t stopping. “How did this even - how did it happen?”
A little background, quickly, would be nice. That way she’d know what she needed to do better. A potion? No, there wasn’t enough time. Regina assumed blood had been attempted, hence the empty bags.
Caroline was relieved she had gone to bed with clothes on. Granted it was just Peeta’s shirt and her own undergarments but still. Now wasn’t exactly the time for modesty either and it wasn’t like Caroline could change herself, nor did she have the time to with how fast Regina appeared. There was a sense of relief in that. Not that she was sure the witch could help, but it was the best shot Caroline had.
“Dreams,” Caroline replied still obviously in pain. It wasn’t that she couldn’t talk. It was just difficult when she could feel her limbs dying. Was it supposed to hurt this much? And why was it going so slow? She was thankful for that because she didn’t want to completely desiccate but she had a feeling the slowness was just making it all the more agonizing.
“Magical pregnancy means magical babies who like to feed on my blood.” Each word came out slowly, pained. “Like draining the life out of me I guess.” She wasn’t exactly sure if that’s what it was doing but it was definitely making her desiccate. “But she I don’t know why it’s bleeding over.” The dreams were so fucked up. Like really she wasn’t pregnant but still getting all the side effects? Thanks a lot Orange County.
Someone appearing in a puff of purple smoke was definitely a new experience for Peeta and thankfully he had put pants on, but was still shirtless at the moment and without his leg. It didn’t really bother him because he was staying close to Caroline at the moment and trying to take care of her. So, when Regina showed up he was struck with how powerful she seemed and he was relieved that Caroline knew someone that could possibly have the skills to help. There wasn’t anything like this in his world, so it was all new to him.
As she explained what was going on he listened carefully and frowned when he realized it was still tied to the magical dream pregnancy that hadn’t happened here. Why did she have to suffer through something like this because of the dreams. “Does that sound like anything you could possibly help with? I’m pretty much useless for all this weird supernatural stuff,” he directed the question at Regina and hoped that they weren’t getting their hopes up.
The clock was ticking and taking her sweet time in figuring out the best course of action wasn’t a luxury - something needed to be done now. “Probably the worst symptom of pregnancy I’ve ever heard of,” she exhaled a sigh, dusky eyes cutting to Peeta. “I’m going to do my best, I promise.”
There was something there that was draining Caroline. Something needed to be siphoned out, and thank gods there were no actual babies to take into consideration (otherwise she really wouldn’t know what the hell to even do). Hands readied and hovering over her arm first, they began to radiate some sort of energy, colored red - it’d transfer to her limbs, and the pull of energy was in reverse. Instead of magic pouring something in her, magic was taking something out of her.
“Hold still,” Regina instructed as she kept it stable, hands heated with power. “And please don’t ever become magically pregnant here.” Seemed a bit dangerous, didn’t it?
Caroline probably should have warned Peeta that Regina could basically teleport but there hadn’t been a reason to before. And at the moment it wasn’t exactly her highest priority. Oh well, at least he didn’t seem too shocked.
Holding still was easy considering she couldn’t exactly move. Her eyes widened as Regina seemed to be pulling the desiccation out of her. That was how it worked in her dreams, but she didn’t know Regina could actually siphon magic out with just her hands. This was one of those moments where she was extremely glad she had become friends with the Evil Queen.
The pain slowly started to fade away with the desiccation, her limbs returning to normal. Even though she was supposed to be holding still she managed to squeeze Peeta’s hand letting him know she was okay. Well for the most part, she was feeling pretty weak now.
Magic was not something he was ever truly going to get used to because it wasn’t something he dealt with on a daily basis. He could handle his girlfriend being a vampire and werewolves existing, but physical magic like this was unbelievable. Do you know how much easier the Hunger Games would be if someone had magic and could probably have killed Snow right away.
Just because he wasn’t able to grasp his mind around it didn’t mean that he wasn’t appreciative of what Regina could do. Watching the woman’s hands move and seeing Caroline’s appearance begin to change made him let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding. The squeeze to his hand was the best thing he had felt in a long time and the look on his face radiated adoration for his girlfriend when he looked down at her.
“I’m going to grab you another bag of blood,” it was the most useful thing he could do. He squeezed her hand once more before getting up, grabbing his crutches, and making his way back to the fridge to grab something for her to regain her strength.
While related to powerful magic-wielding women, from her mother to her green-skinned older sister (the Wicked Witch, how nice), Regina’s knowledge came from the Dark One himself - Zelena’s magic was raw and wild with natural instinct, hers was a skill taught, researched heavily and controlled. Rumplestiltskin was a shit of an imp, and she wouldn’t mind wearing his scaly skin as shoes and a fashionable purse, but he knew magic, and he’d made sure to mold her into the best student she could be under his wing. The queen had mastered the technicalities of the craft, though drawing out desiccation like it was some kind of poison was, admittedly, a situation she hadn’t faced before.
It was as if the ripples of sorcery were sucking out ash, and it’d become dust in the air around them. Once Caroline’s limbs reverted back to normal, a flourish of her hands ceased the process - a tingle would remain afterwards, and it’d diminish after a minute.
Now was the time to let out that breath she’d been holding in.
“That was a little scary,” she admitted and sat at the edge of the bed while Peeta retrieved the blood. “How are you feeling now? You’re okay?”
“Thanks,” Caroline replied to Peeta giving him a small smile. She was usually hungry in the morning, always making sure to feed before heading out for today. And while it was still very early in the morning, way before she usually fed, she had just woken up plus the desiccation had made her weak. So yeah she definitely needed more blood.
Her eyes fell on Regina now sitting on the bed. “Tell me about it.” Caroline had been in a few scary situations. But nothing has been quite as terrifying as beginning to desiccate. “I didn’t know you could do that,” she added. While she knew she needed magic and that had been the same way Valerie had gotten rid of it in her dreams, dreamworlds were complicated. She was just grateful that Regina was such a powerful witch.
“I’m okay,” she added her smile still small. “A little hungry maybe.” Good thing Peeta was getting her some blood. And as usual Caroline was trying her best to be positive. She didn’t want to worry either Regina or Peeta about it coming back. Sure it had in the dreams but that was because magical babies kept feeding on her. There was no reason for that here.
It didn’t take long for him to grab the couple bags of blood from the fridge. He knew she would probably be hungry enough for more than one, so he crutched back over to them and moved to settle in on his side of the bed. He tucked the crutches off in the corner and then handed the bags of blood over to Caroline. “I got you a couple. I know you’re going to be really hungry.” He moved again so he could look at Regina and gave her a smile, “Thanks. I’m glad that Caroline has someone she can call to help out with weird shit like this.”
“Believe it or not, I can use my magic to cast things over than devastating curses and ripping hearts,” Regina chuckled, huskily, her voice still with the remnants of sleep. “My mentor may have been the worst person to have ever existed, but he knew the trade.” Other things were learned from her mother’s spellbook, pages filled with all sorts of knowledge - not to mention new tricks were always learned. Especially here.
Caroline looked so much better. Peeta too, now that he wasn’t drowning in worry over his lover. The queen looked to him, head bobbed into a nod. “And you’re very welcome. I think we’ve seen enough death around these parts.” A hand went to brush a little bit of golden hair from the vampire’s forehead. It was somewhat of a motherly gesture. “We don’t need to add more on the pile.”
She also didn’t want to overstay her welcome. Perhaps it was best to depart soon and give the two of them space to...sit and process, cuddle or fuck, whatever they felt like after a close call. “If anything else happens, don’t hesitate to call me, alright? You two could probably use some downtime after a scare like this.”
Caroline gulped down two blood bags while Peeta and Regina talked. Now that she wasn’t desiccating and had some blood in her she was feeling back to her usual, cheerful self. “You guys can’t get rid of me that easy,” she teased. It was going to take a lot more than some dream to take Caroline out.
Caroline wasn’t going to lie, she was ready for some quality Peeta time after all that. But it felt rude to just ask Regina to leave after she had rushed over and healed her like that. Even if she was offering. “You sure? Peeta can make you breakfast or at least get you some pastries.” There usually had a few around because well he was a baker. Plus using that magic, no matter how easy Regina made it look was probably draining. If she wanted to get home and rest they could at least send her off with some food.
The fact that Caroline was trying to push food on Regina before she left made him laugh and he shook his head, “You don’t have to take any food if you’re not hungry. But seriously, I’ll make you something this week as a thank you and bring it if over if you’d rather do that. I know you like apples.” He had remembered some of their previous network communications, but he hadn’t had a chance to meet the woman yet. He reached over to brush some hair out of Caroline’s face as he awaited Regina’s answer.
“If it makes you feel better,” Regina’s brow raised, and her mouth formed a ghost of a smile. “I won’t protest. But get some rest right now, the two of you. I won’t be going anywhere far if you’re going to bring me something delicious.” Really, she was glad that she was even able to help. “I’ll text you later to see how you’re doing, hm?”
To make sure nothing else was draining her blood for whatever reason - their home was a merciless one.
Tightening the robe around here, Regina rose from the bed and all it took was the wave of a hand before the smoke came, curling and winding, and it engulfed her in an impressive poof. The queen had disappeared as quickly as she appeared.
Caroline nodded but before she could say anything else, Regina was gone. She’d thank her again later. And make sure Peeta brought over some food. Right now she just wanted to relax with her boyfriend. No way in hell was she going to her finals today.
