Weekends meant days off and days off meant spending time with his daughter or friends or anyone else who he didn’t get to spend a lot of time with during the week. So being that it was the weekend, Roy had asked Lian what she wanted to do on Saturday and she’d asked if they could go to the mall. So, per Lian’s request, Roy had agreed to take her to the mall. He knew that it was unlikely that Lian would ask for too much while they were and even if she did, she was a good kid and had been doing well in school lately, so it was likely that he would probably get her something while they were out.
After walking around the mall for a little while, Lian had asked if she could get some ice cream, so they’d headed over to the food court and were currently standing in line, Roy trying to decide what kind of ice cream he was going to get.
Weekends meant little to Dick Grayson. He was a cop on the weekends and off the weekends. 5-9 didn’t hold any meaning to him at all, and he didn’t regret it. The only thing he did regret was the fact that he’d been there for nearly three months now and hadn’t even attempted to make friends outside of that computer network thing. He really just didn’t have time, and he hadn’t thought to ask any of those friends to do things aside from Zatanna who he had known from the past. It was different. So, he was by himself that Saturday. Sitting in the food court and waiting on a call that may or may not come. Not like he had much else to do, his two way was attached to his belt even though he was out of uniform. That was just who he was, Dick Grayson-the guy who didn’t know how not to be a cop.
He liked helping people, plain and simple. What wasn’t simple was figuring out what to do with down time. He stared at his plate of Chinese food absently and poked at it with a chopstick as the boredom set in. His life was back in New York. He really didn’t have one in this new city yet-hell he hadn’t even unpacked yet.
Lian was just reminding Roy that they needed to pick up some bunny food while they were out when he spotted Dick. He hadn’t been looking for anyone in particular when he’d started glancing around the food court, but he had a tendency to people watch as a result of his job since he had to profile people when they were searching for a suspect in a crime and his gaze had wandered past the dark haired man only to jump back to him a moment later. He’d been dreaming about Dick for some time now. Dick had been his teammate then best friend. Dick was the one who had brought Lian to him in the dreams after he’d found out he had a daughter and Jade had left. Dick who had been his leader in the Titans. Dick who he now couldn’t stop staring at.
Dick on the other hand had been minding his own business when a pair of eyes focused in on him and he felt it like a burning sensation in the back of his mind. What was that guys problem? Had he arrested him at some point? Nah, the guy had a kid with him. That wasn’t very likely. Dick looked to the kid and then made eye contact with the odd guy staring him down and stood to shuffle out of eye sight. He really wasn’t a fan of being watched like that. He slid between people until he ended up silently behind the guy who was staring at him all the while. Fro a bit he was silent until he finally spoke up. “Who are you?”
For a brief moment Roy had considered going over and sitting down across from Dick, but then he reminded himself that this was real life and not the dreams where they were best friends. If he went over, Dick would probably think he was absolutely crazy. When Dick stood up and walked away, Roy brought his attention back to his daughter who asked him if he’d heard what she’d said. Truthfully, he hadn’t been listening.
Since Dick had gotten up, the last thing Roy expected was the hear his voice behind him. Jumping slightly, Roy turned and stared up at him. Sure, they’d talked once or twice, briefly, on Valarnet, but seeing him in person, so close, was totally different. “Uh….hey. Sorry. I’m Roy. Roy Harper. Didn’t mean to stare at you like that. I uh...you looked familiar somehow.” Because that wasn’t gonna make Dick think he was crazy. Lian just sat there, eating her ice cream and watching the scene in front of her.
Dick didn’t like feeling the hairs on the back of his neck stand up, and that was exactly the sensation he had with Roy staring at him. “Doesn’t mean anything to me.” He commented, he didn’t know the name. He thought he might if Roy was someone who was there to take him out for some reason. “Did someone hire you to watch me?” He added before Roy’s next comment. “..Familiar how?” He hadn’t had any of the dreams, careful Roy.
Roy couldn’t help but stare up at Dick as he tried to think of what to say. He didn’t want to weird Dick out any more than he obviously already had, so telling him that he’d dreamt of him was out of the question. “Ya know. Like someone that I used to know. Are you telling me no one has ever come up to you then been like, ‘Oh, sorry, I thought you were someone else.’?” He was trying to be cool, but all he wanted to do was tell Dick everything that he knew and the real reason he’d been staring at him.
“...I suppose so. Just not in a new city.” He side eyed Roy a bit more, folding his arms uncomfortably. “..If that’s all it is then.” Dick took his turn to look him over now. “Wait. You’re that guy on the network aren’t you?” It’d taken him a bit but he had memorized most faces since then. His memory for stuff like that was also pretty sharp given his position. The tension in his shoulders loosened just slightly.
Roy hadn’t expected Dick to recognize him from Valarnet, mostly because right now Roy was just some creepy guy to him, so Roy saw this as a way to save face, “Oh yeah, I am. That must be why you looked so familiar.” The whole time they were talking Lian simply sat there, eating her ice cream and watching. She knew how strange her father could act at times and she knew all about some of the strange things that happened in Orange County, so she didn’t think too much of what was going on now. “We talked once or twice on their, didn’t we?”
Part of Dick's job involved him remembering people. So yeah he did recognize him from the net, it was a bit of a relief if he was honest. This guy looked like who he was on the internet, so maybe the rest of those people did too. Maybe they weren't just entirely crazy. Dick looked over at the young girl who was with him for a moment and gave her a almost apologetic smile before directing his attention back to Roy. "Believe so. I'm fairly new here. I don't always make the worlds greatest impression." He could be a bit paranoid. "Dick Grayson is my name." He decided to stop standing behind him like a ninja and talk to him like a regular person for now. He'd decided this man with his young daughter wasn't a threat
“It’s nice to meet you, Dick.” Inside Roy was practically bursting. He had dreamt of Dick and their incredible bromance for a while now and he hated the fact that Dick didn’t know him. He wanted to be best friends with him now, but he knew that if he said anything dream related he’d probably just scare him away and Roy didn’t want to lose his dream BFF already. “I remember when we were new here. We moved out here a little over a year ago. Got transferred out here to work with the Huntington Beach PD.” Roy may have been a crime scene investigator, but he worked closely with the police department when they had a case.
"Same." He nodded with a slightly uncomfortable folding of his arms. "I got transferred to Orange County P.D. after Internal Affairs basically cleaned out that station.." Dick had been selectively ignoring the dream stuff, that was a wise move on Roy's part. He really didn't know how to respond to any of it just yet. Dick was still settling in but that would probably always be true. He still hadn't unpacked his boxes yet.
“Sounds like we’ve got something in common.” Roy couldn’t help but smile a little. In the dreams they’d met as sidekicks to Batman and Green Arrow and in real life they both held jobs in law enforcement, “Where did you get transferred to?” He couldn’t help but be curious. He couldn’t recall if Dick had mentioned it in any of the posts he’d seen him write simply cause he’d been so excited by the sheer fact that he was real and there. Roy really had to start paying more attention to things.
"They haven't placed me. Just a beat cop currently." He shrugged, he had the credentials for homicide but people seemed reluctant to move any papers until the current chaos was done. He couldn't blame them but he wanted to at least have a chance to test into detective or homicide. "Anyway..." He was still standing and felt like a bit of a stalker now doing so. "Uh, should I go, you were in the middle of something it looks like...?" He glanced at his daughter and then back to the other man. He didn't want to be the one to get in the way of family time.
“That sucks, man. Hopefully you get placed soon.” Roy knew how crappy is was not having a permanent position cause he’d been in the same situation when he’d started cause of his age. He was one of the youngest detectives with Huntington Beach and got flack every now and then from the older guys. When Dick mentioned leaving, Roy glanced at Lian briefly before looking back at Dick, “I mean, you don’t have to. I’m sure Lian wouldn’t mind if you joined us. Unless you have some place you need to be.”
“You can stay.” Lian said, looking up at Dick, “My daddy needs some more friends.” While she enjoyed spending time with her father, she thought that he deserved to have friends too and right now he only had a few.
"Nah..it's fine. I mean I can wait I guess until things are straightened out by internal affairs anyway. " He offered a shrug and then a smile at both of them. "No where immediate. " He admitted and joined the pair. Truth be told he could use some friends too.
