Ben had ultimately decided against Maxim's in favor of something similar, but out of town. He hoped otherwise, but there was admittedly a lot of potential for this to go badly, and the risk of forever sullying a restaurant full of happy memories was too great.
As he turned the corner onto his street, he could not deny the strong feeling that he was a child returning to his former neighborhood. Even in only a few weeks the landscape had changed from spring to summer. Flowers had been replaced by full, vibrant leaves, and the lawns were responding vigorously to and array of undoubtedly unnatural fertilizers. Every color was saturated.
His own house, however, had the appearance of a washed out photograph, of something that had lost its color from being in the sun too long. After all, gardening had been his hobby, not Juliet's. Or maybe it was that he was so overwhelmed with fear and feeling, that his brain was doing him a favor by creating a cloud of derealization.
He pulled into the driveway.
He took a breath. A long breath. His hands were shaking.
The world moved around him in a blur as he made the journey from the car to the front door. Her front door. For heaven's sake, it was still his front door, too, wasn't it?
He rang the doorbell.
