God, but it feels amazing to get out of the house for once. Hopefully tonight no one from work will track him down for any reason, but it's been known to happen on his rare nights off.

At least John seems quite different from people at work, which is a refreshing change. And it'll be nice to spend some time from someone from the motherland who isn't also in his office. So Q settles at the bar and orders himself a beer while he waits for his new friend to arrive. Or new hopefully friend, really.

Flicking his cigarette out into the direction of the sidewalk, John has to resist the urge to light another immediately. Instead, he cocks his head to the side, looking Q up and down, as if truly appraising him.

"Don't see why you can't be a bit of each," he says after a moment. It's true, though. Q is both handsome and pretty at the same time, and is thin enough to warrant the other bit, too. "But if it's a chore to think yourself elfin, you might just try lithe instead?" He's teasing now, breaking out the finer vocabulary just to impress slightly.

"Lithe, I like it. Perhaps I'll just hire you to describe me. You'll be my Shakespeare."

And John is quite handsome, in a scruffy, rough around the edges sort of way. Q quite likes rough around the edges, if he's honest with himself.

"Should we go back in? I believe I promised to pick up this round."

Sure, John's a bit rough. He isn't one of those shave every day sorts, anyway. He likes to think he's gotten a little less rough as the years have gone by, though. While his speech habits might never be a posh delight like Q's are, he's at least devised a plan to wear a shirt with a loosened tie most days. Certainly that's a step up from Sex Pistols and The Clash t-shirts with cropped off sleeves he'd been so fond of when younger.

"I'll take it," John's smile is slightly lopsided, like he wants to laugh, but is holding it back. "Words and synonyms for one Velveteen Hamlet." He nods then, his nose motioning toward the door. Never did he turn down a round that he wasn't paying for.

Better than the cardigans Q tends to wear day in and day out, really. At least tonight he'd opted for a waistcoat instead of a sweatervest, wanting to make a good impression on John. No tie, though, the top two buttons of his shirt carefully unbuttoned. God he's such a teenager, isn't he?

And then John surprises him into a laugh. "Velveteen -- " He ducks his head with a giggle, glancing sideways at John as he settles back at the bar. "Oh, I may have to keep you."

The waistcoat had been duly noted and appreciated -- John wasn't the most upbeat of blokes, but he could certainly appreciate nice things when he saw them.

John gives another laugh of his own as he slips back into his seat next to Q. He's pleased with himself for making the other man laugh -- he gets the impression that maybe Q doesn't do it quite enough, not real ones anyway. Polite chuckles hardly count. "You'll have to have me first," he says, and it's as full of innuendo and intention as a phrase like that can really get.

"I may have to do that as well." There. Now it's been said and it's all out in the open, and Q feels a little more at ease. The flirting after it's been decided they'll end up sleeping together at some point is so much more relaxed than the flirting before it's a sure thing. Or at least he feels that way.

"So what do you do for fun? Aside from meet up with strangers you met on the internet."

He isn't wrong about that; flirting is fun, and there's something to be said about giving a good chase, but it can be exhausting sometimes. Constant second guessing isn't something anyone really likes.

It is a bit easier after Q's statement of equal intent - that John can't help but chuckle over as well. He squints at the beers that are in little clear doored-fridges behind the counter. They've got to have something not shite back there, he thinks.

"Honestly? Never done this before. I'm not much a computer person." He's had troubles with things as easy as a toaster in the past, and that's really not saying much. It's a wonder he figured his laptop out enough to even manage finding the Net community. "But fun? Well. I'd say I've hobbies in ruining liver and lungs. I'm keen on good music - it's best to see it live whenever possible."

"I'm enough of a computer person for the both of us, no worries there. I spend most of my free time on my computer, which is tragic, really. Or cannibalizing things from Radio Shack to make newer and better things. Now and then my friends force me to be social, and we go over to this fantastic bakery that makes a very nearly English cup of tea. Damn good coffee as well, for those who don't drink tea."

Q notices the direction of John's stare and quirks an eyebrow, "See anything worth trying?"

"Everyone needs a talent," John points out, and isn't surprised in the least that Q's involves being stuck indoors all day. "Think I was born just a bit too early to really have had a chance with the things." He's lamenting, but not really at the same time. "Bakeries tend to make everything in life a bit more brilliant, yeah? And -- no. Maybe?" He squints some more, and then just shrugs. "I've have a surprise import. That way it's no one's fault if it's shite, and everyone's delighted if it's not."

"Oh you're not that much older than me, are you?" Everyone's older than him, it seems. Or at least a fair amount of people seem to be.

"I'll try the surprise import as well, might as well live a little."

John's smile is never short of charming, even when he lifts his shoulders into a lazy shrug. "Depends? How old are you?"

The import surprise is funny in the fact that the bartender brings over a different kind each. John's is something pale from Germany, and he doesn't disapprove.

"Just shy of twenty-six." Q eyes his surprise, which seems to be something dark from -- god only knows where.

"I'll trade you surprises?"

John is gracious enough to slide his beer over to Q, and then come back with something that looks like utter shit. Australian? "Fuck me," he murmurs, bemused. He'll drink it anyway.

"Just shy? So twenty five. See here, I've got a decade on you, young man." It doesn't occur to John to think that maybe ten years is a deal breaker in age differences when sex-later is concerned.

"Young man?" he scoffs. "Next thing I know you'll be yelling at me to get off your lawn."

Neither of theirs looks particularly appetizing, and he suspects that the bartender did that on purpose. But he braces himself for his mysterious German beer anyway and holds the bottle up in a toast. "To surprises, then."

"If I had a lawn, you wouldn't be allowed on it." His nod is assuring of that fact; resolute. Very playful.

"Cheers," he agrees, lifting his beer as well before taking a swig, because he can't bare to do anything with moderation. It's an awful beer, and after a careful swallow, John considers finding where the bartender lives: surely he has a patch of grass that needs to be pissed on.

Q bites his lip against a laugh and tries his own beer, which seems to be equally terrible, from the look on John's face.

"Would you rather go back to mine? I have some beer from up north that's actually not terrible."

"That," John says, placing his beer back on the counter (in a way that says he's not going to pick it back up), "is a bloody brilliant idea. And you know, I think I'll take you up on it." This way he can give up on his random plans of revenge. He hasn't been in America nearly long enough to excuse an arrest.

"It's only two blocks or so away, if you don't mind walking." Q pays up their tab and stands, tucking his hands into his pockets for lack of something better to do with them.

John doesn't mind, but he doesn't really think he needs to say so, either. Instead, he just pulls out two more fags, lighting them both as they hit the outdoors, and then handing one wordlessly to Q. Probably, he is a bad influence.

It's a nice night -- California isn't quite as humid and hot once the sun has gone down, and it's actually kind of pleasant.

"Oh dear, a lit cigarette. I suppose I'll simply have to smoke it. How vexing," he smiles and takes a long drag. "Something tells me, John, you're going to encourage all my little bad habits."

The walk to Q's flat isn't bad at all. In fact, it almost takes Q longer to unlock and disarm the door than it takes them to walk there. He ushers John in and locks up behind them.

"Careful what you touch, some of it is delicate. And some of it might simply not want to be touched."

"It's character building," John quips, and does not at all disagree. He's been known to do that to people -- but he'd rather be a bad influence rather than just a poor rub. As much as John might say otherwise, he's actually quite keen on being friendly. So long as the people he's talking to aren't complete sods.

He'd finished his cigarette on the walk over, and so playfully sticks his hands in his pockets to avoid touching anything. But really, after that lock on the door, he can't help but wonder if some things in here really don't like being touched. Either way, just because poking is right out, doesn't mean John doesn't look around. "Nice place."

"Smoking is character building?" Q casts a dubious look over his shoulder as he heads into the kitchen to grab two bottles of beer, cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth.

On every available surface, there are electronics. Some completed projects, some random parts that are going to be turned into new and interesting things.

He opens the beers and serves them, like a civilized gentleman, in glasses, setting them on the mostly clear coffee table in front of the sofa. "The sofa's safe, I promise. Come sit."

"Something like that." John really doesn't understand all these computer bits; and he's fairly sure that his excuse of being born too early for it is wrong at this point. Then again, it seems too late in life to be interested now, so maybe it's not wrong at all.

In any case, he avoids bumping all the counters before making a home for himself on the couch. "You really don't go out much, do you?" He says it cheekily, in any case.

Q clears away the electronics that are on the coffee table, so John doesn't have to worry about knocking into them at all. "I don't, sad but true. The last time I went out, my friend Alice and I went on a tea crawl. Which is exactly like a pub crawl, but during the day and with less of a hangover."

Tea crawl. Adorable. Q really doesn't seem to be doing himself any favors as far as being a stereotypical romantic British man goes, and John can't help being amused over it. "Bless," he murmurs out, and hides his very widest of smiles behind his properly poured glass of beer. And then, because he can't help himself, he steals the rest of Q's smoke in order to take the last drag.
