WHO: Duncan and Zelda
WHAT: Post-kidnapping comfort
WHEN: Right after her return post
WHERE: Zelda's home
WARNINGS: Not sure. Will update as they become relevent. Swearing, certainly, Duncan does that.

Duncan shuffled from foot to foot as he waited outside the door. A small part of him was torn: Zelda was back, yes, but so many others were still missing, including his dad and Hope. He could still be looking for them, still be trying to help.

The rest of him remembered that he'd gotten exactly nowhere in all his searching and that the damned Avengers were on the job, not to mention his mom and most of the LAPD, and he'd mostly been running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

Besides. This was Zel. Zelda feeling insecure and unsafe, of all things. Which apparently he could help her with. Which...brought up a number of questions, actually, most of them questions that had been lurking in his head for ages but which he'd crammed out of sight and chosen not to look at because he was afraid he already knew the answers. But what if he was wrong?

Ultimately, all the questions and doubts were trumped by the single fact that he just plain needed to see her. That post she'd made wasn't enough. He needed to see that she was back and unharmed, that none of the worst had happened.

Which was why he was standing outside her door, shuffling his weight from foot to foot and waiting for her to unlock the damn thing.

Zelda hated being so unsure of herself. Ever time there was a noise she jumped, even when in the back of her mind she knew it was just the house settling. She hadn't been mistreated, she hadn't been hurt at all, but it had still rattled her. She liked to think of herself as strong and untouchable and she'd been plucked from the street so easily. It made her feel insecure and angry and all she'd thought about when she was in the little room waiting for something, anything to happen was how she wanted to see Duncan again.

Not a single thought had turned to James when she'd been alone, but they'd often turned to Duncan. How good he smelled when she was tickling him, how patient he was with her bullshit, how much she just wanted him to hold her. Zelda didn't think anything would come of it - he was probably hung up on Hope, who was the pretty, funny one of his group. This fear didn't stop her from running downstairs and unlocking the door when he said he was behind it. She was in her pajamas and her hair was messy, but she threw her arms around him and closed her eyes, feeling safe for the first time in a long while.

Duncan found himself with a sudden armful of half-fairy girl squeezing his waist almost hard enough to bruise. Which was just fine by him. He wrapped his arms back around her, letting himself enjoy the moment, the solid reality of her after days of worrying. A few of those questions reared their heads--she'd said it was Kirk the Jerk who made her feel safe and protected and perfect, so why was she letting him be here doing this now instead of Kirk the Jerk?--and he stomped them back down again, as usual.

Ultimately, he didn't care. The truth of the matter was that sooner or later, he ended up doing most things Zelda asked him. Leandra'd teased him about it more than once. It wasn't that he couldn't resist Zel. He could. He just didn't particularly want to. And especially not right now. Even if this moment where she wanted him, specifically him as opposed to anyone else, was temporary, it was nice. More than nice.

And anyway, what mattered was that she was back, and glad to see him, and had said she'd feel safer with him nearby. Which meant there was nowhere else he wanted to be. End of story, all other questions irrelevant.

Duncan bent his head and smelled her hair. "Hey there."

In her moment of terror, it wasn't Jimmy that she'd thought of, it had been Duncan. It was like her subconscious recognized that Duncan had always been there for her, had always helped her when she'd needed it. When she'd found out that Duncan had been looking for her, it came as no surprise. Of course he would.

Her eyes were shut tightly against tears, but a few of them defied her and slipped down her cheeks. "Hi," she murmured, burying her head in his chest. "Thank you for coming. How's Lee?"

"Anytime." He said it off-handedly, but it was true. "Do you want her answer to that question or the real answer? She'll tell you she's fine, and she looks and sounds fine. But she's scared." His arms squeezed a bit harder around her. "Our dad went missing maybe a day or so after you did. Mom's got half the police force out looking. There's been a whole rash of it lately, apparently, ransom notes everywhere."

Duncan pushed her towards the door, just a bit. Nice as holding her was, he'd rather be doing it inside.

She wiped her eyes lightly against his shirt, nodding. "I'd be scared too. Your father's strong and can fight and stuff, but ... I don't know, he's so sweet. I wish I'd seen him, but they kept me by myself." She moved away from him, figuring they should go inside. "Do you want anything to drink? Daddy got me some cream soda, he's fussing over me."

Duncan shrugged. He was worried about his dad too, but..."He'll be okay. Dad's pretty tough, and Mom will find him. She mentioned something about having a lead, though from an odd source. And knowing Dad, he'll be annoying the guards by singing at them, just to get on their nerves. They'll be sorry they ever took him." He'd been a lot more worried about Zel than his dad or Hope. They both were better at protecting themselves than she was. Not exactly something he was going to mention, though. He had some brains.

"And sure, cream soda sounds good, so long as your dad doesn't fuss over me too. Did the bastards feed you, at least?" The amount of food she could eat was astonishing. Half-fairy metabolism or something.

"I hope for the kidnappers' sakes that they're not around when your mom finds them. She's terrifying." Zelda actually smiled for the first time in a few days before going to the fridge. "Daddy won't fuss over you, he likes you. They kind of sort of fed me? I think they fed me enough for normal people. They were confused when they saw me eat a whole pizza, like I'm the first teenage girl to have ever done this or something." She rolled her eyes. "Come on, let's go to my room, I've got a snack horde up there."

"For our sakes I hope they are, she's got a lot of steam to work off. Anyway, they deserve it." All right, so he had a vindictive streak sometimes. Sue him. "Who was it that found you, in the end? Your dad and--" Duncan remembered not call him Kirk the Jerk, that was just the name for in his head and when talking to Leandra. "--the captain? You didn't say. And I know your dad thought he'd found a lead...wait, I forgot to ask, have they found your mom too?" He assumed so, or else she'd be more freaked out, but best to check.

He took the soda Zelda handed him and grinned at her. "The snack horde doesn't surprise me. I wouldn't be surprised if you had stashes of them all over the house like a squirrel."

"True, I guess they sort of have it coming." She was a bit sheepish and ducked her head, smiling to herself. "Daddy and Jimmy found me. Jimmy's beating himself up, he thinks he could've prevented it if he'd walked me home." She rolled her eyes, obviously not convinced. "They found Mom too. Mom and Daddy are in their room, I wouldn't recommend bothering them." She made a grossed out face, but it was more for effect than anything else.

"Squirrel. I try to think of myself as a snack food dragon, and they're my gold." She started up the stairs, aware that she'd never had him in her room before, and hoping it wouldn't get weird.

"Wouldn't dream of it," Duncan assured her. He was surprised to not hear thumping noises through the walls. Though relieved. That would get, uh, awkward. The rest about Kirk, he let pass; he couldn't think of any answers that wouldn't make things worse. Pointing out that the kidnappers would've just waited until another time when she was alone might just make her nervous again. Criminals like that weren't opportunists, they planned. And it was over now.

The comment about the dragon earned an actual laugh, the first he'd made for...man, weeks maybe, not since the disappearances has started. "That suits you much better," he agreed. "Especially given the whole glitter thing. Dragons are supposed to be attracted to shiny things, right?" Huh, come to think of it, he'd never been in her room before. "Your room's not filled with giant medical textbooks that've been dusted in blue glitter, is it?" He grinned up at her.

"Don't worry, the walls in this house are pretty thick. Mom's first husband planned for that, apparently." She smiled back at Duncan, glad to hear him laughing. Her wings even came out, fluttering slightly and leaving a thin coat of glitter in their wake. "Why would I dust the textbooks in glitter? That just seems like it would make them hard to annotate."

Opening the door to her room, she revealed a space that was much lived in, but much loved; all of the wood in it was dark, all of the fabrics a dark blue to match, and there was a window seat that she obviously spent a lot of time in. She had a four poster bed that she'd twined blue netting from to make it almost like a canopy, and true to Duncan's speculations, there were a load of medical textbooks around, but they were tucked into one of the many bookshelves that lined the walls. "Sit wherever," she smiled, wings not going away.

"Didn't say you'd do it deliberately," he pointed out, smiling at her wings. He hadn't seen them often, but they were unforgettable. He wasn't exactly unfamiliar with magic, given extended adopted family, but Zel's wings were something else again as far as he was concerned. "Glitter just happens where you go, sometimes."

He stepped in and looked around, examining it. "Nice," he said, meaning it--he'd been in much weirder girls' rooms, and this one had no pink anywhere, which already moved it to the head of the list. He went straight for the window seat, partly to have a look at the view and partly because it was clearly somewhere she spent a lot of time, which made him curious. He didn't sit down though, just looked outside. "You do your studying here?"

"They usually just come out when I'm happy," she blushed, amused that they were out that moment. She wondered if he'd pick up on the pretty obvious tell, banking on his not realizing that at the moment he was making her happy.

"Yup, I study in here. That's my favorite spot in the whole house." Moving to sit down on one of the pillows, she tugged his hand to get him to sit with her.

"Only when you're happy, huh?" Duncan added that to his mental checklist of things-that-make-Zelda-smile: sex, messing up his hair, milkshakes, and, apparently, being compared to a dragon. Odd list. He sat down next to her and motioned for her to turn around. "Come on, I promised you backrubs, remember? Though working around the wings might be tricky."

She shrugged a shoulder, looking at her feet. "You came. It made me happy." When he sat next to her, she shook her head, refusing to turn around. Instead, she wrapped her arms around his shoulders and buried her head into his neck. "Duncan, I - " She didn't know what to say. When push came to shove and I thought I might never see anyone ever again, you're the only one I thought of.

"'Course I did." The backrub refusal caught him by surprise, as did the hug, a bit. Zelda was demonstrative but usually there'd be tickling or hair-mussing or some attempt to get him to make a funny face by now. This was...different. But not bad. Anything but bad.

Duncan wrapped an arm around her waist and held the back of her head with his other hand, hugging her back. Her breath was tickling his neck, which was pretty distracting really, but he didn't want it to stop. "'Course I did," he repeated, quieter. "I'll always come whenever you need me." Maybe he shouldn't admit that, but hell. It was true. And given how fucking worried he'd been while she was gone, he just didn't care about whether saying it made him look like an idiot or not.

She hated that her eyes were tearing over, and she hated more that he could probably feel dampness against his neck. "I don't know what I did to deserve that. But it goes both ways." She squeezed her eyes tighter against the tears, burrowing a little closer, her wings still flat against his arm. Even though she was crying, he was there, warm and smelling vaguely of guy shampoo. "Duncan, you ... you know I like you, right?"

Oh, because that hadn't sounded stupid. If she hadn't just been through a traumatic experience, she'd have facepalmed at her own idiocy.

Duncan froze. Oh fuck. Which did she mean? Did she mean like as in...really like, in which case no, he'd had no idea at all, or was this the I'm sorry we're only ever just be friends because I like older guys like Jimmy and you're too inexperienced etc etc speech that he'd been preparing for since forever? He knew which answer he wanted it to be but he also knew which answer seemed more likely. Stupid English language, too open to interpretation.

And either way, what to do?

His neck was wet. That wasn't good. He definitely did not want her to be crying, whatever she'd meant. Though her wings were still out, which apparently meant happy. Crying and happy? God, girls were confusing sometimes.

But he still didn't know what she'd meant, and had to figure that out before he could figure out how to make her feel better about it. Besides, he needed to know. Because he'd honestly dismissed the idea of her ever being interested in him as impossible long ago. "Is that like as in friends or as in more than friends?"

She leaned back and wiped her eyes, sniffling hard. "Fuck, I'm usually better at things like this." After closing her eyes, she covered them with her hands. "I kind of realized recently that I ... really like you. In the romantic way, in the naked and sweaty way, in the friends way - I like you. In the whatever way. And I know I've been a bitch and strung you along because seriously, why did I not realize my thing for ruffling your hair wasn't flirting?"

Her hands fell to her knees which she promptly buried her head in, sighing. "Fuuuck, I'm so stupid. Feel free to biff me upside the head, I deserve it." At least she'd stopped crying; she was more upset with herself than anything else. This was not going how she'd wanted it to.

Duncan stared down at her head--his hand was still resting on it, even though she'd moved away a bit--still stunned.

And because he was stunned, he didn't think about his response. The truth just...slipped out past all the other stuff.

"Zel, I'm completely crazy about you."

His hand stroked her hair.

In a romantic comedy, she'd have done something profound - told him she loved him, snogged him, laughed, anything but what she actually did. Which was look up with red-rimmed eyes and a stuffy nose. "Huh?"

In a romantic comedy, he'd have had something more suave to say. Something smooth that would make her melt, or just something cool.

Instead, he just repeated it. "I'm completely crazy about you." He managed half a grin, mostly because this was so damn surreal. "Thought you knew, but that I wasn't your type. Uh, still pretty sure I'm not your type. But you're exactly mine. My type, that is."

His free hand reached for one of the ones on her knees and threaded his fingers with hers. Funny how easy it was to do that. "Wasn't intending to let you know since it might make things weird, and I know you've got that thing for your Jimmy guy--or at least you did, or--" Fuck it, he had no idea what he was talking about anymore. All the unspoken stuff seemed to be clogging together in his head trying to come out at once.

Duncan groaned. "Can you just ignore all the idiot babbling I'm doing? The important bit was the crazy about you part. I've known that for ages, I just tried not to think about it."

"I had no idea, actually. I figured you liked Hope. Everyone does. Or Lora, she's really hot too." She shrugged and squeezed his hand, leaning against him again. "I don't know, I guess I was scared? I mean, I knew Jimmy and I wouldn't work out in a touchy feely way, but he was a good distraction for a while."

Her head was moving closer to his, which made her blink. "You're not babbling like an idiot. Just ... I've liked you too. I just didn't want to admit it, because if you said you didn't like me, it would've actually hurt, and I'm kind of a pussy."

"Melora?" Duncan looked briefly incredulous. "No way. No way ever. She's my cousin. Okay, not technically, but still, no, and she'd say the same. And Hope..." He shrugged. He'd had a bit of a crush on Hope for a while, yes, hard not to, Hope was stunning on many levels. "...isn't you. I just, I can't resist you, ever."

That was really the clincher, for him. Ann had broken up with him months ago because there wasn't any spark, even if they'd both wanted there to be. Whereas whenever he was with Zelda, it went beyond spark, she was constant fireworks. He'd always known that. Whether she was trying to annoy him or teasing him or being serious, whatever she was doing, he ended up going along with it just for the fireworks.

And now it seemed the fireworks were a mutual thing. And her face was on a level with his. That was irresistible.

"Completely crazy about you," Duncan said yet again, because now that he'd admitted it he couldn't seem to stop admitting it, and moved the few inches forward to kiss her.

"Melora's gorgeous, are you kidding? But if you're close like that, I get it." And she got why everyone had a crush on Hope. Hell, she'd had a crush on Hope, and they were practically sisters in how close they were.

She met his eyes, smirking a little. "You totally like me," she teased, unable to keep the conversation from veering into playful, even when she was about to snog him. Which happened before she totally realized it. One second she was looking up and thinking 'oh, hey, Duncan's really close to me' and the next he was kissing her. She'd always figured she'd have to be the one to kiss him if it ever happened. She was delighted to be proved wrong.
