Gaius was sure this was not the stupidest thing he had ever done. He couldn't remember what had been worse than this, but he was sure there had been something.

He had spent the last week trying to pretend that everything was OK, for Thomas and Melora, but mostly for himself. Unfortunately it wasn't working. He'd been able to pretend for years, he didn't understand why it wasn't working now. So he was trying to fix it. Thomas didn't like boys, so why not just use magic to fix that problem? It didn't seem like that difficult of a spell. A few magic words and a lot of will and he could be a girl, that would fix the problem.

Unfortunately it hadn't been nearly as easy as he thought. So here he was, stuck in his room, half man and half woman. He felt like a circus act. His left side now had long hair and curves, and his right, well it was him but suddenly he had a beard. It was like a bad joke.

He sent a text to Melora, "please don't ask why, but can you get Dumbledor? I need help." He knew it wouldn't work. She would demand to know what happened, but he could hope.

'Hm? What's wrong? I'm coming over'

Melora knew Gaius wasn't okay. She'd been with him pretty much every spare moment she'd had this week. She'd been cheery, and acted like she didn't realize he was pretending. She was better at that than he was, and there were a few times she thought she'd actually made him happy. When he was ready to talk, she would be there for him.

Melora knew all the shortcuts to Gaius' place, and the easiest way to sneak in--no small feat, given that Gaius lived on the palace grounds. She hadn't showed any of their other friends, including Thomas. Not that Thomas would need to sneak around, given that he lived in the palace proper. It took Melora about five minutes to get from her room to Gaius', and she ignored all of the incoming text messages on her way.

"Gaius, open up. I can pick locks, you know." By which she meant she could poke at them until she got frustrated and blasted them off. Nimue didn't really appreciate that much, though.

	Gaius sighed when he heard Melora. "Please, Melora, just get Dumbledor. This is embarrassing enough as it is." His voice sounded strange, sometimes high and sometimes low. It almost sounded lire he was back at puberty. This was such a mess. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Melora furrowed a brow at his voice. That didn't sound right. "Gaius, open the door. It's me. You know I won't laugh. Think of all the stupid things you've seen me do." They were supposed to have a special bond. He wasn't allowed to keep her out like this. He'd been keeping her out all week, and it was upsetting. Like he didn't trust her. She stepped forward, leaning her head against the door jam. "Come on, Gaius."

	Gaius grumbled as he got up to unlock the door. He had thought about doing it with magic, but with how bad this spell had messed up he didn't want to chance it. He just unlocked it, heading back to his bed, allowing her to open the door. He didn't like to keep things from Melora, but he knew she would be upset. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Melora heard the click, and gave it a moment. When it was obvious he wasn't opening it himself, she turned the knob and opened it. She bit her lower lip when she saw his state, looking more concerned than anything. She didn't laugh or yell or any of the ridiculously immature things one might expect from Melora. Instead, she slipped inside and closed the door behind her.

"Dumbledore's on his way," she told him, moving over to the bed. "I didn't know what to tell him to bring." She knew what must've happened. Gaius had tried to change his gender to get Thomas to like him. It had to be one of the stupidest things he'd ever done. What was he going to do if it had worked? Just live like that the rest of his life? But Melora wasn't about to lecture him or yell at him. This was evidence of how much Gaius had been hurting, and she wasn't about to scold him for letting her see that.

She grabbed one of Gaius' hands and sat down close to him, leaning against his side. Yeah, it was a strange situation, but physical contact always made her feel better when she was upset; hopefully it would help Gaius. "Want me to get a razor so we can get rid of that beard? You look silly with facial hair." She looked up at him, her head on his arm, with a small, wry smile.

	Gaius nodded in response to Dumbledore being on the way. "I don't know what he should bring, either." He squeezed her hand. He was shaking a little. "I don't know, I think it kinda looks like Dad." He smiled weakly before he started crying, leaning down to hide his face in Melora's shoulder. "I'm such an idiot. I'm sorry." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Melora wrapped her arms around him, hugging him close. "It's okay, Gaius." She almost told him Dumbledore would fix it, but she knew that wasn't what he really meant. Fixing the body was just a tiny bit of what needed to be done. "I know," she said, kissing him. "I know, I'm here." She closed her eyes, resting her cheek against his. Melora was used to hugging Gaius. They'd known each other since they were tiny, and were very touchy. Hugging Gaius when he had one boob, though, was pretty weird. His boob was squishing one of her boobs and not the other, and it was strange for her brain to interpret what was going on. Still, she held him close, kissing his cheek. "Okay," she agreed, though she knew she wouldn't. "I love you, Gaius."

	However weird it was for Melora it was weirder for Gaius. He felt just wrong, but hugging Melora was normal. That at least was normal. "Love you, Melora." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

There was a soft tapping on the door. "Who is it?" Melora asked quickly, anticipating Gaius' urge to keep his parents in the dark. When Dumbledore announced himself, Gaius told him to come inside. The wizard had a small bag along with the wand he always kept.

"Do you want me to stay?" Melora asked, looking at Gaius and smoothing his hair. She would stay as long as he needed her, but it was getting increasingly hard to cover up her emotions. She wanted to keep up a strong face for Gaius, and it was hard.

Melora nodded, getting up. She debated with herself about whether it would embarrass him in front of Dumbledore before deciding she didn't care and kissing him on the forehead. "Love you, Gaius." She waved a bit to Dumbledore before leaving. "Thanks, Mr. D."

She left them alone, leaving the guesthouse and walking across the grounds. As soon as she was away from Gaius and his parents, she started bawling. She was so furious and upset and sad for Gaius. He was so broken.

It was harder to be sneaky when she was crying, but she managed to avoid any guards. She was already inside the grounds, after all. At some point along the way--she wasn't even sure where--Melora punched a wall. Some side hallway, probably, since no one seemed to be alerted. "Thomas!" she called, pounding on his bedroom door.

Thomas had been having a lousy week.

Gaius and he were doing a very cautious, polite dance around each other, and it was making him feel ill. He was his best mate, and honestly he had started to wonder if he'd ruined everything. Thomas never once had thought of a man, any man, like that and so it had come as an incredible shock to him that Gaius would fancy him. It didn't bother Thomas in the slightest that Gaius was gay, but the fact remained that he wasn't and nothing could be done about it.

It was even worse when he realized how badly he'd hurt his best friend for not feeling the same way. How could Gaius even stand to see his face?

Spending most the time in his rooms, he'd taken up reading. Might as well try to learn a bit of history while he was hiding from everyone who gave his life meaning. His head jerking up from the pages, Thomas felt a cold fear go straight through his spine.

"... Melora?"

She tried the knob and it was unlocked, so she threw it open. She looked a mess. Her eyes were red, her cheeks were wet with tears and her hair was sticking to her face. The knuckles on one of her hands were scraped and bleeding.

"You complete asshole," she said, her voice quivering, furious. She hauled back her arm and slapped him hard across the face. "Do you have any idea what this is doing to him?"

Thomas scrambled back onto the far side of his head and over, standing with the expanse between them. He put a hand up to his face, his eyes a mixture of shock and anger.

What did she have to do with this?

"I know, I'm a bloody terrible person, and I ruined both of our lives. Thanks so much for asking the physical injury to the rest of it, it really helped!" For all his bravado, the anger faded almost as quickly as the sting of the slap, and raw pain eclipsed everything else in his expression.

"I don't know how I can fix this or do anything different, Mel. I'm sorry!"

"He's falling apart, Thomas. He's doing really stupid stuff." She wouldn't tell him what it was. Gaius wouldn't want her to, and it would only make Thomas feel worse. Though she didn't particularly care about that last part, right now.

"He just.. He needs you. Just. Be normal! Be there. I know he's trying to push everyone away, but he needs you to fight back. If it's weird, tell him it's weird! Stop letting him get away with pushing you away. Because if he keeps on like this.. There won't be anything left." She was yelling at herself, too. She had been letting Gaius act like things were fine because she didn't know what else to do. She should have called him out.

Two guards rushed into the room, alerted by the commotion. They saw the look on Thomas' face and the blood on Melora's hand and went to grab her.

	"Please," Thomas pleaded with the guards, "Don't, this isn't her fault. It's mine." All mine. "What's wrong? What happened?" If Gaius had hurt himself over this, Thomas wasn't sure he would ever forgive himself. "Mel, I'll do whatever it takes for this to be okay again!" "Sorry, Your Royal Highness," one of the guards said. "Queen's orders." They knew the Queen would have their heads if they let ruffians assault the prince. There was procedure to follow.

Melora struggled against the guards, but she wouldn't deny what she'd done, or apologize for it. If anything, being dragged off was just making her angrier, and more irrational. "What about the people he hurts?" she demanded, nodding at Thomas. "He's a prince, so he just gets to fuck over as many people's lives as he wants?" she snarled, practically feral. The guards each had one of her arms and were trying to drag her back into the hall as she struggled and kicked. "I hate you, Thomas Pendragon!" She screamed as they pulled her down the hall. "I wish I never knew you!"

	Thomas stood dumbstruck as the door slammed behind them. He'd go to the Queen to make sure Melora wouldn't get in real trouble first. Then... Then he didn't know what. She was right. Everyone was better without him. Gaius, Melora, even his parents. There wasn't a place for him here. Maybe there never would be. (Reply to this) (Parent)
