Who: Morrigan and Alim Surana (and Aedan Surana)
Where: Morrigan's cabin in the woods
Warnings: Flammable materials?

The past week, while a little unusual, hadn't really changed much around the cabin. After a well-placed glare from Morrigan, Alim had acted mostly normal despite the clothing change. Aedan's training still continued as if nothing was different. She had never thought of herself as a 'cartoon' before, and it was strange to see her skin look so artificial.

There was some relief when the week passed and things returned to normal. Perhaps there was an aspect of it that had reminded her of home--Alim's tattoos, her old jewelry--but it was hard to feel homesick when everything felt so unreal. It was unpleasant.

Morrigan ignored the change back, for the most part. The whole thing had been unimportant. The sooner everyone stopped talking about it, the better. Now she was sitting at the desk, reading an old book.

Morrigan didn't lash out. Quite the opposite, really, she leaned into his touch, pressing her neck back into his hand. Her eyes closed. It wasn't anything romantic or silly. He was a healer. He was just fulfilling a role, nothing more. That's what she would claim, anyway.

If that surprised Alim, he didn't let it show. Best not to let anything slip through that could result in her changing her mind and deciding that yes, fire was the proper solution to this problem. "Any better?"

The two of them were likely both unaware of Aedan's return to the cottage. Alim had left the door open, just enough for him to get in, so he entered making barely a noise... and then pretty much immediately ducked back outside when he saw them. Since when were they even remotely pleasant to each other? He knew it probably wasn't exactly what it looked like, but that didn't do much to dampen the confusion.

"No," she lied, unwilling to say anything that would give him permission to stop. Her eyes were still closed, and she didn't seem to have noticed Aedan's quick appearance.

The headache was nearly gone, though her neck was still a bit stiff from being bent over her books. She rolled her head slowly from side-to-side, stretching her neck.

Try as he might, Alim couldn't help a slight chuckle. She never changed... he pressed a little more firmly, increasing the strength of the spell a little. Better to be safe than sorry. "Just let me know. It's about time I made myself useful around here."

Sure, he had his uses out in the woods with Aedan (who was getting steadily more and more confused as he watched), but when it came to being back at the cottage, he wasn't exactly the most useful elf in the world. Years of Circle and Warden training hadn't exactly taught him how to live like this.

She tried to murmur a mocking agreement regarding his uselessness, but it came out sounding far more pleased than she meant it to. Her pain was gone. The spell still felt nice, though. It was probably a little wasteful to use healing spells just because they felt good, but it had been a long time since Morrigan had indulged in anything.

Alim's usefulness--or lack thereof--was debatable. Morrigan hadn't 'invited' him because she needed him. They hadn't formally established precisely what his role was, but Morrigan hadn't expressed any complaint that he wasn't performing his duties.

If it was wasteful, so be it. There was something about making Morrigan happy - or, well, as close to happy as she could get - that made most things worthwhile in Alim's eyes.

He slowly pulled his hands away, the slightest smile on his lips. "There. If it comes back, just... bite me or throw something at me and I'll get the message and try healing it again."

She smiled just a bit. "That isn't a very specific message. It might take some time to decode." She threatened him often enough, but she hadn't actually hurt him recently.

She was vaguely aware that she was smiling too much and being too nice. Alim hadn't pointed it out, though, so maybe it was all right.

"If there's one thing I'm good at, it's decoding messages. I'd figure it out." Admittedly, the messages he was used to decoding tended to involve either strange Elven riddles or ridiculous Dwarf-made puzzles, but that didn't change things. Not much, anyway.

He'd more than noticed the unexpected niceness, but he wasn't about to comment on it. Best not to give her an excuse to change.

"Alim.." Morrigan turned around to face him, her hand catching his. She looked up at him. "You and I never had what I had with Brother." It hurt just to say his name. That was almost enough to make her push him away and withdraw from the conversation. She'd loved Brother more than she thought she was even capable of. "I don't think I'll ever have that again, with anyone.."

"But please don't leave."

Her suddenly mentioning Brother was fairly unexpected. Alim had seen her heartbreak over having to leave the man, much as she'd tried to deny it, and he'd fully expected to never hear his name again, just because it might bring up a full set of unpleasant thoughts and feelings.

"I like it here. I'm not going anywhere," yes, he had a perfectly decent apartment back in the city where he didn't have to play the oh-so-fun game of 'is that Morrigan on my leg or an actual wolf?' every now and then, but he couldn't think of returning there. And not just because she'd bite him if he tried. "I wouldn't want to replace him, you know. I just... want to be able to make you happy."

"I'm not sure.." She didn't know that she could go back to the way things had been before. Any time she felt remotely happy, she felt like a terrible person for being happy. Guilt had never really bothered her before. But any time she began to recover from the heartbreak, she remembered Brother's accusation that she'd never actually loved him; how could she cheat on him if she had loved him? And Morrigan's uncertainty about her own emotions fed into that doubt. Maybe she couldn't love anyone.

Morrigan closed her eyes, biting back her emotions. She didn't want to do this in front of him. He'd seen too much of it already.

Emotions and Morrigan had never gone together well even back in Ferelden. Alim could remember quite clearly the first time she'd quite brusquely informed him that love was a weakness and that it had no part in their relationship.

He gently cupped her face, fully aware that doing this might end up badly. "Morrigan. Maybe... it's just time you stopped bottling everything up," oh, yes, this was going into pants-on-fire territory. "I know it's never been your strong point, but... it pains me to see you like this."

"And do what?" Morrigan frowned, but she wasn't pulling away. "Tell you?" So Alim could use them against her? True, he hadn't so far, and she didn't really think he would. Still, she didn't know that she could see the good of letting her feelings out.

She looked up at him. "Alim.. When I try to feel anything else, I.. It hurts."

The simple thought of using her emotions against her was completely out of the question to Alim. Harming Morrigan in any way was something he'd never even consider... well, the idiocy he'd done on arriving here excluded.

"I might not be able to stop it hurting, but I can probably serve as some form of distraction," he couldn't even pretend he knew how to fix things like that. When the two of them had been involved last, emotion hadn't come into it until just before the Battle of Denerim. "Maybe in time, it'll fade. We can hope, right?"

She frowned a little. "I don't.." If being with him made her hurt, how could it serve as a distraction from the hurt? But.. if she completely shut herself off, it might never get better.

"Alim.." She took a deep breath, not quite sure she could. She didn't trust herself.

Well, no time like the present to be daring. It wasn't like he'd never done it before, and if this was the tipping point when it came to suddenly being on fire, so be it. He was a Warden, he could handle it.

"Let's at least try," he murmured, before moving to kiss her.

Morrigan didn't fight against him. She didn't respond much at first, but soon leaned into him a little. She didn't kiss back, but when he broke off, she pressed her cheek against his, nodding. They could try. It would be hard, but they could try.
