Who: Aveline and Hawke
What: Discussing relationship stuff
Warnings: None

Aveline knew that Hawke was going to make fun of her, but she didn't know who else to talk to. She could tell Alistair they could go back to how they were, but that thought was there, and saying 'don't think about a pink elephant', just made you think of a pink elephant. She headed to the Varric's mansion at a time she knew Aveline would be there and rang the bell. She heard the barking of Loki and a thunk as he ran into the wall by the door.

"Exactly. And the way this world works Wesley could even show up. How am I suppose to move on when either one of them could show up tomorrow or four years from now."

Hawke probably wasn't the best person to give advice about something like that, considering how her own relationships had panned out since arriving here. She bit her lip, trying to think of the best way to phrase this. "Maybe... part of this world is living for today. I know you love Donnic, but would he really want you to sit around and mope and wait for him forever?"

"Forever? No. More than three months? Probably." Hawke might not have been the best person to talk to, but she was the only one that Aveline felt like she could talk to. She looked a little helpless. "I just don't know."

There had to be some way of going about this. Hawke thought better on the battlefield than she did when it came to relationships, but there had to be something... other than the obvious 'go with your instincts' answer. That didn't work for everyone.

"Give it a little longer, but... don't do anything like shutting yourself off from him, that'd probably just make him think he's done something wrong," and from what she knew of Alistair, he'd likely do something embarrassing, or attempt something 'heroic', to try and fix things. "If he likes you as much as I think he does, he'll respect that you want to wait when it comes to... more involved things."

And if he didn't, he was going to get a royal arse-kicking from Hawke.

"I talked to him. I don't want to shut him out, I just also don't want to lead him on." She shrugged. "I didn't even know we went on dates, apparently. How am I suppose to avoid saying things that might give him the wrong idea."

"By avoiding saying 'get in my bed, you royal bastard'?" Hawke shrugged. Yes, that was silly, but as long as she avoided that, there was probably enough ambiguity about it all to avoid too much strangeness. "Honestly, Aveline. Don't overthink it, or you will end up saying something weird."

Maybe not to the level of her example, but still. It could happen.

Aveline actually laughed at that. "If you say so. I'll try to just...stay calm."

Hawke smiled. She'd been a little worried Aveline might take that badly, so hearing her laugh was a relief. "I'm sure you'll manage everything just fine. Might want to avoid drinking whilst near him, just in case."

Not everyone had the issue of randomly kissing people whilst drunk, but it was better to be safe than sorry. "And I know I've said this before, but... no awkward gifts, even if the time seems right. Please."

Aveline smiled, "No drinking and no gifts, check." She didn't drink much anyway. "Thank you, Hawke. You've been very nice about this whole thing."

"I'm nice all of the time, don't know why you'd think anything else," maybe that was a bit cheeky, but it was Hawke, and it was accompanied with a grin. Honestly, she made a point of being nice to all her former party members... even Fenris, despite the elf's rather blatant dislike of her. "If you ever need anything, I'm glad to help. I want to make sure all of you end up happy here."

"I don't mean you aren't nice, I mean you could have teased me endlessly, and you have refrained. Thank you." Hawke was always nice. Not teasing was different from being nice.

"I have my occasional moments of maturity," they didn't happen very often, but they certainly did occur. Mostly when people weren't looking, but still. "I guess I felt teasing would just lead to either you punching me, or me giving the worst advice in the history of Thedas."

Really, being remembered for something like that was best avoided. Especially since it'd likely end up in her gaining a new and even more ridiculous title.

"I probably wouldn't punch. Glare at you in a stern and disapproving matter more likely." It was pretty obvious she was joking, even with her.
