Who: Henry and the Stepford Cuckoos

There were few things the Cuckoos enjoyed more than messing with people's minds. One of those things was the beach. The four girls wore matching silver bikinis that had men all over the beach staring. Fortunately, most of them were too intimidated to make a move.

The girls had casually mentioned to Henry where they would be. He was interesting enough, but not the sort of person they would actually invite to anything remotely date-like.

The Cuckoos were spread out on the sand, soaking up some sun. A nearby man who had been contemplating saying Hello suddenly found himself compelled to go buy four daiquiris.

"They eat it. It's what they do. Keeps people from overloading and going crazy." Sparky arched up into the touch like a cat, climbing a little higher up her arm and making a tinny little sci-fi noise as he waggled his antennae.

"Yeah, pretty sure." Henry said, smiling again, "He usually only makes theremin noises when he likes people."

She tilted her head. "We haven't had one, and we seem to be okay.." Of course, the Cuckoos had their own way of damping their emotions. Their way seemed a bit more elegant, but this way seemed to work too.

She pet Sparky, scritching his back gently. "You're cute," she told the Shadow in a bit of a higher pitch.

Henry shrugged, "Lot of people don't and they're just fine. But he works for me, mum's got one too, lot of people we know do. Haven't ever figured out if that's why we know them, or if it's the other way around."

Sparky, for his part, waggled his antennae again, mimicking the pitch and the cadence, but not the words.

She giggled at Sparky's mimicry, petting his head between his antennae. "We want one," she said, cooing over the Shadow. That was probably very inaccurate. The other Cuckoos wouldn't want one at all, but Mindee did. She looked back up at Henry, smiling.

The head-plate scritches got an actual purr out of the critter, sounding like squeaky clockwork more than anything, just leaning against her hand and seeping contentment. As far as emotions went, Sparky was much easier to read than Henry, since the Shadows communicated mostly in emotional tags.

Henry smiled, "Sometimes a stray one shows up here sometimes, latches onto someone."

She was so amused by the little guy that she'd completely forgotten about her food, and even where they were. She kept petting his head, glad she was making Sparky happy. She was having a really nice time, much better than she normally did at the beach.

One of her legs bumped against the inside of Henry's, and she ran her sandaled foot against his booted one.

"Hey now." He said, though there was amusement in the tone, "Careful with that, might make somebody jealous." Which, he figured, was kind of the point, but he wasn't going to say as much.

Mindee smirked, looking a bit more like one of her other sisters. She knew what he meant, but it was no harm having a little fun. "You want me to scritch your head, too?" She had fourth a mind to come across the table and just start making out with him again.

He laughed, an actual, honest laugh, the kind that were fairly rare, really, but he did lean his head forward over the table to where she could reach, "Sure, yeah, that's exactly what I meant."

Mindee leaned forward, one hand bracing her up on the table as her other hand snuck into his hair and pulled herself closer to kiss him. If he didn't like it, his hair would probably bite her or something, but she didn't really care right now.

Oh, hey, something he hadn't quite expected, but he wasn't going to argue, and apparently neither was his hair, curling gently around her fingers even as he leaned up to return the kiss.

Sparky, on the other hand, made a beeping alarm clock noise, sounding almost like a truck backing up, in miniature, pushing at Henry's arm with half of his spiny little legs.

Mindee closed her eyes and started to deepen the kiss--when Sparky started making noises. She couldn't help but laugh, pulling her lips just far away enough to giggle.

"Hey, buddy," she said, sliding her hand under Sparky and lifting him up to her face. "You need a kiss, too?" She gave the Shadow a kiss between his antennae.

Henry had blinked at Sparky's tantrum, though he couldn't help but laugh softly, shaking his head. The critter had played cockblock before, so he wasn't entirely surprised.

He grinned outright, however, when Sparky made a cartoony kissing noise back.

She giggled again at Sparky, distracted now by his cuteness. "You're silly," she told him before guiding him over to settle on her shoulder.

She slid around the table (rather than going over it) and slipped in next to Henry. "Should we try again?"

Mindee slid onto his lap, her fingers slipping back into Henry's hair. "Unless you'd like to go back to your place?" she asked with a sly smile. When the Cuckoos decided they liked someone, they tended to be a little... easy.

He lived with his parents? Pfft. And the Cuckoos lived together, so that was probably out of the question, too. They tended to dislike eachother's taste in boys, sometimes enough to... Well, Sophie had other things going on, too. It's not as though Mindee would be forced out just for liking a boy.

She pulled a mock pout before leaning in to kiss him, her legs straddling him.

He was perfectly fine with that, one arm looping around her waist to keep her from slipping, and the other one bracing against the edge of the table behind her to keep her from bonking into it.

She was glad Sparky didn't try to intervene this time. Pressing that much closer, she deepened the kiss. She was probably wearing less clothes and was closer to him than most strippers doing lap dances, these days. It caught the attention of a few passersby, as well as the owner of the crab joint.

The man started to approach them, his arms crossed. "Excuse me--" he stopped mid-sentence and looked confused, turning his head left and right, his eyes passing over the couple. "Where did they go?" He scratched the back of his neck, shaking his head as he turned around to walk back to the stand. "I could've sworn.."

Henry couldn't help but snicker into the kiss, shaking his head and murmuring: "Clever girl." And then, drawing away just a little and arching a brow at her, he asked, "Do you trust me?"

There was a small pause when he asked that. It was hard for a telepath to fully trust someone whose mind was locked up so tight. Still, she didn't think he would hurt her. She trusted him enough. Mindee nodded, curious as to what he would do next.

He smiled then, looping both arms more securely around her waist and just sliding them both into the shadow under the table. Well, through the shadow under the table, with a sensation like cobwebs and into the Backstage.

The Backstage wasn't dark, not really, but there was an odd absence of light, where the ocean was outside, Backstage was just the reflections of the light through the water, still rolling with the tide along an approximation of a sandy shore, "There we go, well away from prying eyes."

"Oh!" Mindee held tighter to him, as if the 'trip' was less slipping into shadows and more riding on a roller coaster with no safety bar. She looked up at him when he spoke again, and then around. It felt oddly familiar, somehow, and a bit unsettling.

She loosened her grip on him, trying to get acclimated to the strange surroundings. "Strange bachelor pad you have, Henry," she said, sounding a little distracted as she looked around. "Do you bring all the girls here?"

He laughed, shaking his head, "Welcome to my homeland. And no, I don't." He shrugged, "Don't bring all the boys here either, if that was going to be the next question." Really he just brought the ones who seemed curious about it, of which she definitely was one.
