Arthur had been cordial at the ball the night before. He'd greeted all the people he was supposed to, and followed all the proper protocol expected of a prince. The people who knew him, however, would have noticed that he wasn't enjoying himself. He had too many things on his mind. He was still thinking about Merlin's confession earlier in the week. He'd also been somewhat disappointed by the attendees of his ball. So many couples, enjoying eachothers company, yet Arthur was alone. Several ladies had shown interest, but he hadn't returned their attention. He just hadn't been interested in any of them.

Now the queen thought she had a solution; it was laughable. He sent Merlin to send Kate away and waited in his room for his report. Arthur sat sprawled across his chair, scowling at nothing in particular.

"Good," Arthur grumbled, shifting in his seat to sit up a bit straighter. "It's bad enough she tried to invite Kate to the ball." Arthur didn't realize when he planned the ball that it was on the same day as the intended wedding had been. The whole thing must have been torture for Kate. Arthur was beginning to feel tempted to marry Kate purely out of guilt. It wasnt as though anyone he wanted to marry was here. He sighed.

"What's it like to not be a prince, Merlin?"

Merlin shifted a bit uncomfortablely. "Well, I guess it sucks just for different reasons. Or maybe it's nice just for different reasons. I don't have everyone watching my every move, but it doesn't make it all that much easier to make decisions. I have to clean and do servant things and go to school. I worry about what my friends think of me, but I don't have to worry about what a whole country thinks of me." He shrugged. It was weird being so honest with Arthur, but he felt like he should right now.

Arthur was surprised by that response. He'd been expecting some snide remark about having to sweep floors or muck out stables, but Merlin had been...well..honest. If Merlin had replied sarcastically, Arthur would have mocked him by saying something like 'You have friends?'. Instead, Arthur replied in the same seriousness. "Your girlfriend.. Nimue, right?" It seemed like he'd heard the name before, but he wasn't worried oder it. "And Gw--well, you probably have friends from school." His tone darkened considerably when he caught himself.

"If you're too busy, Merlin, you don't have to do this anymore." He sounded utterly depressed. Losing Merlin would just be the last in a long line of losses. But he was a liability to Merlin. Someone who had to be kept in the dark.

Merlin frowned at him. "I have some friends from school and a couple people I met through the boards. And there's you. I care what you think. To be honest I really only do the whole servant thing here because I get to hang out with you. I. I think of you as my friend." He was ready for Arthur to mock him or call him a girl. He just wanted him to stop being a drama queen.

Arthur stared at Merlin for nearly a whole minute. How many times had Merlin made him feel like his head was about to explode? It would be a whole lot quicker if Merlin would just use magic to do it. "Well.." He was speechless. He scratched the back of his head, glancing away. This did not feel manly at all.

"Well, there are certainly more competent servants here than you, if that's all I was looking for." Yes. Confess your feelings through mockery, Arthur.

	Merlin looked a little hurt. Not that he don't understand. It was hard for Arthur to express himself. But it wasn't exactly easy for Merlin and he was at least trying. Merlin smiled to cover up his first brief emotion and laughed a little. "I don't know how to use the new machines they use to clean things." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"That's not--" Arthur had seen the look on Merlin's face, and he hadn't meant to hurt him. Bloody hell. "That's not what I meant. You do a fine job. I only mean, even if I didn't have any work for you to do at all, I would still want you to be my servant." That wasn't right either. "Look, it's just that I like having you around! Sometimes I make up things for you to do," he confessed. Last week he'd given a maid the day off just so Merlin would have to take over her duties cleaning Arthur's room.

	Merlin just looked at Arthur for a second and then bowed his head so he could cover up a smile and half laugh. "OK, so really this is silly. I should stop working here and we can just hang out. You have plenty of people who can do the work that I do." Sometimes things were so much simpler than they made them out to be. "You really made up work for me to do?" "But I don't want other people to do the work. Merlin!" he protested. "Princes aren't supposed to just 'hang out'." 'With commoners' wasn't added, but it probably didn't need to be. Besides, Merlin would get busy with school and his lady and Arthur would be at the bottom of his list, without a way to force Merlin to come back. He frowned.

He turned over an idea in his mind. It was crazy, but he was getting a bit desperate, with Merlin's talk of leaving. "Maybe I can convince the queen to make you a ward! You'd have servants of your own then, and more time for your studies."

	"I could talk to her! Insist. Perhaps negotiate a bit." Would he agree to marry Kate in exchange for this? Arthur wasn't sure. He hadn't ruled it out. "I'm sure once she got to know you, she would turn around. Maybe she has you confused with someone else." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Merlin was positive that the queen wouldn't go for it. He also was equally as sure that nothing he said would stop Arthur from at least trying. He wasn't really against the idea. It was bizarre, but being the queen's ward would almost make him Arthur's brother, which would be kind of awesome, if not insanely weird.

"If you insist you can talk to her. I'm not going to try to stop you."

	Arthur was pretty sure he had lost his mind. Merlin, a ward of the castle. It was madness. Hopefully this was all a dream, and he would wake up with no record of this awkward conversation actually existing. "Right, well.. Um." Subject change. "How are you liking your school?" "And magic? You mentioned before they taught it there. I suppose you're learning it." Arthur sounded surprisingly calm about the topic. He hoped Merlin wouldn't lie to him about it anymore.

"Tell me more about what you do when you're not here. You mentioned friends?" Arthur didn't really have any of those. At least, not outside of Merlin. He'd spoken to a few people, but he wouldn't say he had relationships with any of them.

Merlin looked a little embarrassed, "Yeah, I learn magic. I'm learning a lot faster than I could have back home." He was still a little nervous about talking about magic with Arthur, but he wouldn't lie to him again.

"There's Mia. She showed me movies, which are really cool. You met Nimue. I have a few friends at school. They don't all do magic or anything, but a couple do and they can teach me a lot."

Arthur nodded, very matter-of-fact about the whole magic thing. "Nimue, right. The girlfriend. She seemed rather... spirited." The woman had teased Arthur a bit at the ball, something not many people could get away with doing. He did have to admit she was beautiful, though. He really was astonished that Merlin could convince someone that lovely to see him. "How did you meet her?"

Perhaps he could live vicariously through Merlin's lovelife.

	Merlin looked a little uncomfortable. "Spirited is a good description." He thought for a second about how to tell him about Nimue. "Have you found out that sometimes people can be from different times and universes. She knew a different me who was a little older. "Yes, I met a girl from the future. She called me a legend." It was a little flattering, he had to admit. It was difficult for him to wrap his head around, but he had some idea of what Merlin was talking about. "Hm. Well, that's lucky, I suppose." It was strange, finding a person who liked you for something you didn't remember doing, but it was better than the reverse.

Arthur smiled a bit. Hearing Merlin talk about a girl like that, he couldn't help think about how much he missed Gwen. Still, he was happy for Merlin. At least one of them was happy.

He shrugged. "Well, there's Morga--er, Miranda. We've met a few times, but it's strange. She likes me, but. Well. She looks so much like Morgana, it's just strange." He shrugged. He really hadn't gotten out much.
