Who: Arthur and Merlin
What: Fighting Monsters! Learning secrets!
Warnings: Action! Adventure! Intrigue!

Arthur hadn't had time to find the suit of armor the palace servants had taken from him. He was outfitted in leather armor instead, a crossbow on his back and his sword in his hand. At least he still had that. His crossbow was far more modern than his old one, but the sword was the same he'd had in Camelot. There would've been bloodshed if anyone had tried to take that from him.

Arthur yanked his sword from the heart of a corrupted bear, kicking the body from him onto the side of the road. The monsters were getting bigger.. More dangerous. He glanced above him to see some flying beast overhead. He reached for his crossbow as he crouched into a ready stance.

"Right. Don't hit bystanders. I think I can do that." He looked around for any more monsters and saw another bear-creature coming behind Arthur. He raised his bow, swerving it in a way that would make any person around him nervous and shot, the arrow hitting the ground uselessly. "Shit."

Arthur ducked, fearing for his life more from Merlin than the bear. "Right, give me that." He held out a hand for the crossbow. Not one of his better ideas. "Grab.. a branch, or something. One of those metal things," he said, pointing to an iron bar that may have once been a part of some structure before the monsters attacked.

He turned to face the monster, swinging his sword.

Merlin gave him back the crossbow, glad to have it out of his hands. He looked around and picked up a metal bar. As soon as Arthur's back was turned he whispered a spell and the bar went flying, hitting the monster-bear-thing right in the head, knocking it over.

Arthur blinked, turning around to Merlin. He'd meant for Merlin to swing it like a sword, not to throw it. And the effectiveness of it was just as surprising. "Was... Was that you?" He looked a little confused. "You can't even point a crossbow, but you can do..." he turned back to look at the bear, which appeared to be unconscious. "that?"

How was that even possible?

"Uh, dumb luck?" He suggested, big dumb smile on his face. It probably wasn't even possible for him to throw that metal bar more than a foot if he didn't use magic... but Arthur didn't need to know that.

"Where the hell did you learn to throw like that?" Arthur may not have known that Merlin couldn't throw the bar more than a foot, but he certainly suspected. His confidence in Merlin's physical prowess was seriously underwhelming.

Come to mention it, a lot of really fantastic throws had happened during fights where Merlin was around. He'd always given the credit to other knights, but there wasn't anyone else here! "Merlin, you have been hiding something from me."

Merlin looked more guilty than... well something very guilty. "Hiding? I haven't been hiding anything. I'm an open book. No secrets or hidden anything. No hiding for me. You told me not to go hiding so why would I be hiding anything?"

"Oh, yes you have." Arthur stepped closer, his eyes bright. "You've been hiding the fact that you're actually good at something!" He gave Merlin a hard pat on the back.

He started walking toward the downed bear. "And here I thought you were a complete and utter failure at everything!" He leaned over to pick up the metal bar...and could barely get it off the ground.

He frowned, turning back to face his servant. "..Merlin..."

Merlin just watched as Arthur walked away from him dumbfounded. He couldn't believe that Arthur actually believed he could do that. Then he saw Arthur struggle to pick up the bar. Oh... great.

Merlin tried to smile as Arthur looked at him, then saw one of the giant flying creatures swoop down. His face fell and he cursed. He lifted up his hands and said his incantation. His eyes glowed and the creature was stopped a foot from Arthur and fell to the ground.

"Shit."

"Merlin," Arthur said, his tone serious. He glanced over at the downed creature. He didn't know what to think. Clearly Merlin was a sorcerer. He'd been using magic, not only here, but surely back in Camelot, as well.

He stepped closer to Merlin, lowering his voice to a stern whisper. "Explain yourself."

Merlin took an involuntary step back. He looked frightened. Terrified might be a better word. "I. I had to protect you! I couldn't let it kill you!"

He was going to die. Arthur was going to kill him. He used magic in front of him. He knew full well not to do that and he did it anyway. Not that there was anything else he could have done. Damn that sword looked sharp.

He would run. Just teleport to Nimue. He could do that. And then he would just have to hide, for a very long time.

Yes, Merlin had saved his life. Merlin had probably saved his life back in Camelot, as well, more than once. How humiliating!

Magic wasn't illegal in England. Arthur wasn't sure what to do.. There wasn't really anything he could do. There was no one to report it to, which was almost a relief. He wouldn't have wanted to turn Merlin in to be executed. For all of Merlin's failures he was...well...Merlin.

Still, it didn't sit right with him. "You lied to me," Arthur said, frowning. For a moment he looked more hurt than angry. "For years!" He'd trusted Merlin. There were things he told Merlin that he didn't tell his own father.

He relaxed just a little when he saw Arthur wasn't angry. He looked away from Arthur's face, he definitely felt ashamed. "I know. I'm sorry. I couldn't tell you. You would have had to turn me in. Your father would have had me killed. Then what good could I have done. I tried to use it as little as possible. I swear I did nothing but protect people with my magic." He looked up at Arthur to try and see if he hated him.

Arthur would've liked to say that Merlin could have trusted him, that he would have protected him from Uther, but he couldn't know for sure. Sometimes he hated being a prince and having duties to his kingdom.

"I trusted you, Merlin." He was very cross. Merlin had fought by his side, and all along he'd been keeping such a huge secret. Now he knew why Merlin had been defending magic users. He sighed.

"I know. I'm sorry, I wanted to tell you, but I didn't want to either die or make you lie to your father." He knew he had betrayed Arthur, but there wasn't any other choice.

Arthur wasn't sure what else there was to say. He clenched his jaw, trying to process it all. Could he blame Merlin? He wasn't sure. He just wished things could have been different.

"It's getting dark. We should take shelter."

Merlin just looked at him for a moment. "I. Okay."

He didn't think he'd heard the last of it, but Arthur was willing to stay around him, so it was a good sign.
