WHO: Ariel and Asmodeus
WHAT: Old demon meets new angel
WHERE: Ariel's flat outside London
WARNINGS: Possible profanity and a copious amount of mindfuckery.

It had gotten annoying, by now; every few hours Ariel would be interrupted by some loud, overbearing demon at his door. He would ask them who they were and what they came for, and he would blow them into something approaching oblivion. Eventually he'd snapped at the leader of one of the legions that he was busy and if someone had a bone to pick with him, they should show up at his door them-bloody-selves. He'd closed the door firmly in the demon's face, and resolutely ignored the calls to open it. Apparently they couldn't just blow it down?

Incidentally, Asmodeus had also gotten fed up with things on his end, too. Good lackeys were hard to come by, in this day and age. Mind you, he wasn't sending the good ones, but a minion was a minion, and he was starting to wonder what was destroying all of his. He took the time out of his schedule, and tied his hair back, and put on a suit, and with the tie in place and his hair back, he went to the door of the man and knocked lightly. It was different than the pounding full-fist knocking of the lesser demons, and in itself, it was friendly and cordial.

He put his hands behind his back and stepped back to be sure that the man inside would be able to see him through the peephole.

Ariel did notice the difference in the knocking, and he assumed it might have been Iku; she knew not to knock hard. "Coming!" He called, locking up his notes with a spell before going to the door. What he saw surprised him, but somehow, he knew the man before even asking for an introduction.

Ariel opened the door, secure in the knowledge that the demon wouldn't simply strike first. "This is gratifying," he finally said. "I never expected my ultimatum to your minion would actually be accepted." Might as well be civil while the demon was being so. "Come in?"

What Asmodey hadn't expected was to see - well, more feel - was an angel. He hadn't ever met this one, but there was a pervading similarity between him and Raziel, and he gave a small, tight smile, bowing his head as he took the offer of coming in. His voice was mellifluous, and tinged with a New York accent, although it was largely unaccented. "I don't know what ultimatum you're talking about. I'm here to see the being who's been doing away with at least half an army of my lesser demons."

To be fair, Asmodey had no grudge against this new angel. Just the being connected to him. And even that was waning, because his sister seemed so happy. "Introductions on my part are unnecessary, but I have literally no clue who you are."

"The last legion that came to my door, I told them that if their master or mistress had a problem with me, they ought to come themselves and speak to me." Ariel explained, holding the door and closing it behind the demon. "My name is Ariel. Raziel was my mentor. Thus, I know who you are very well." He was at his most courtly; if he could be civil and on his guard at the same time, so much the better.

"Ariel? The young boy that was the last straw, the one who sealed his fate?" Oh, this was precious. Asmodey smiled more sincerely. "He tutored you to take his place? Well, I can't say as I blame him. Mind if I sit?" He asked, standing beside a chair. "Here's the thing, Ariel. I have nothing against you, personally. The problem is, our old friend decided to rip all my fear from my soul and feed on it, before stripping me of my powers and dismembering me slowly. He would have succeeded in actually destroying me if he wasn't so fond of keeping trophies of his conquests. Now, what would you do, in my place? Would you turn the other cheek? Would you wish to inflict the same pain on the one who harmed you?"

He shrugged. "So I sent my legions after him and all that he cared about. I really can't be faulted for being so upset. After all, I had thought that we were in good standing, he and I." In fact, Asmodey had a theory that Mephisto coveted his power and his sway over a certain red-haired man.

He disliked the little smirk that he saw on the demon's face, but he still played nice. "Sit, please." Ariel listened to the demon talk, face impassive, shrugging.

When Asmodeus had ceased to speak, Ariel simply shook his head. "I've died before, but I've never gone through the process you speak of. However, it's my understanding that you killed quite a lot of people the last time you were here. Should that not have been punishable?"

"For the same reason, incidentally. I was sent to the Void," Asmodey looked straight at Ariel for the first time, looking into his eyes, "do you know of the Void, keeper of knowledge that you are?" He shook his head. "Likely not personally. I sincerely doubt you'd want to. I was sent there after being destroyed. I was thrown so far into the Void that nothing could sense me. Being killed by a foolish mortal was an unfortunate circumstance, and one I paid him back for in pain beyond reckoning. I... do regret one death on that tally, but such is the way of my nature. I do not strike first, but I do strike back."

He shook his head, all too graceful. "It wasn't because of my vengeance upon the boy and his family that Mephisto decided to destroy me. He may have excused it as that, but it was premeditated violence. He was waiting for me, collected me before I was even finished. In fact, Ariel, I do believe that your diabolical teacher killed me simply to gain himself an iota of power he didn't already have."

"He is no longer diabolical." Ariel kept his temper. "And your arguments with him are really not my concern, sir. I know of the Void, yes, but I've never seen it, nor do I wish to. If you wish me to acknowledge that you've suffered, I will do that. However, I cannot tell you that you have the license to cause further suffering. I can assure you that Raziel has allies, as I'm sure you do."

"His kind doesn't put fear into me, Ariel, nor does my sister. While I understand your justified upset over my response to what your teacher did to me, I don't appreciate a young creature like you making backhanded threats. If you intend to threaten me, do it outright, or don't do it at all. Or, if you're feeling novel, just do what you intend," Asmodeus tutted. "And evil or not, he is still the being that dismembered me, flayed me, and kept me alive to feel every moment of it. Whether he is Raziel or Mephisto, he is the creature that scorned me."

And then, in a switch of topic, he sat back up a little, his smile gone kind and generous, "Let me take you to lunch. I promise on the name of my lord that you will not suffer any tricks or harm. It's only fair that I take the student of an old friend to dine. I at least owe him that for all the good he's done."

"Fine." Ariel saw no harm in that. "If you attack him, I am duty-bound to defend him, as are others. That's all I was intending to convey." Not entirely truthful, but close enough. "And I do understand being angry and vengeful, believe it or not. However, I owe him quite a lot, and even if I didn't, I don't tend to repay kindness with neglect." It seemed simple to him.

When the demon asked him to lunch, however, he raised an eyebrow. Maybe it was hubris, maybe it was instinct, but he nodded. Why not.

Asmodey could tell that it wasn't exactly the truth, and gave a dainty arch of his brow to it, but beyond that, he didn't respond to Ariel's excuses. He stood and offered his hand. "You'll see, Ariel, that I'm not the evil that they've painted me to be. In fact, if you'll allow a moment of objectivity, you'll find that I am much more human than any other so-called demon." He smiled and the scenery changed around them to a busy street in one of the more old-fashioned Chinese villages, outside of a city, but still large enough to have its own row of restaurants and other shops. He stepped into a restaurant, bowing his head graciously to the hostess, speaking a fluent local dialect. "Two to be seated, and we'll have ale to start."

He may have picked Ariel's mind about his favorite kind of food, and his favorite place in general. Whoopsies.

"Being human does not mean being less evil," Ariel replied quietly. He knew this village, and he knew that there was no way the demon could have been so specific unless he'd peeked. He thanked the woman politely in an equally fluent dialect - after learning Japanese, he'd brushed up on both Cantonese and Mandarin, and this village was close to Guangzhou.

Once the pleasantries were dispensed with, Ariel asked bluntly. "Is it your sister who is so close to Raziel?"

Having a seat at the low table on cushions and only slightly raised seats, Asmodey rested his hands on the table, lacing his fingers together. "Inanna? Yes. It was out of my love for her that I watched over the young angel in his travels. We parted ways in Jerusalem, but I always stayed close to him, even when he was the creature you met in Bulgaria. I loved her dearly, those days, and would have done anything to make her happy," unfortunately, that had waned. He was happy for her, yes, but he hadn't loved her for thousands of years. She'd snubbed him far too often, and beyond that, she misconstrued his kindness for having ulterior motives.

"I cared greatly for him as well, you know. Like a little brother. He wanted to learn all that he could, and I was there to guide him. He wanted to meet all the beings who were gods, and I was there to introduce them. Raziel was my pupil, I suppose you could say, back when the world was still young and vibrant, and the heavenly host was a bunch of upstart children."

For some reason, Ariel believed him, at least mostly. "He speaks nothing but praise for her. I've only met the lady once or so, but I was curious." He remembered Inanna as a dark beauty, smiling and serene. How unlike this being. "I know it likely sounds soppy to you, but she's fundamentally changed him."

When Asmodeus explained about his relationship with Raziel, though, Ariel had to shake his head. "At various points in my life, he and I have had that sort of relationship. I wanted to know it all. Once I paid with my life, and this time he gave his humanity for me." What would Asmodeus have done, once upon a time, for Raziel? One wondered.

"Oh, he's changed her as well. At one point, she and I were far closer, far more similar, but time has a way of changing us all, especially when love comes into play," Asmodey explained, and smiled sweetly at the waitress as she brought the ales, ordering deep fried duck with dumplings and consommè. He took his ale and sipped it, murmuring, altogether pleased with the taste. "My word, they have good ale here. Raziel was always dichotomous. Shaper cutting than the sharpest blade, but so giving and gentle to follow through. It is that gentle nature in him that was lost so long ago. I hope he found it again now that he's come out of the shadows."

He looked critically at Ariel then, "And I hope that his replacement knows compassion far better than he ever did."

"It's unusual for small villages to do anything but beer well," Ariel murmured, having ordered his favourite dim sum. When he heard the unspoken question from Asmodeus, he simply looked up. "I can be compassionate when it is called for, certainly. But for me, certain acts are beyond the pale, and deserve none of it."

"That's wise of you," Asmodeus said with a bow of his head, "I am, by the way, sorry to inconvenience you with the dregs of my armies. It's basically business as usual, and had I known it was happening to such a greenhorn, I wouldn't have sent them off to you at all. Though, you do seem capable enough to deal with them, regardless of how new you are at it. Considering how little I feel about this one... I just don't think it's worth it." He made a dismissive wave of his hand, and whether or not Ariel knew it, it dismissed all his legions back to their places in Hell.

It both relieved and grated at him that Asmodeus was so easy to write him off as a fool and a greenhorn. Ariel chose his words carefully, however. "I'm sorry, 'how little you feel'? I'd be grateful if you could explain."

Asmodey didn't see Ariel as a fool. In fact, he felt that Ariel might have been less foolish than his predecessor, which helped considerably. But the question made him bow his head. "I've been here longer than your dear Creator has existed, Ariel. I've been walking amongst mankind since they first were made. I'm old. I'm tired. After dying twice a year at least for the past five thousand years, most of which simply are because of what I am, and not what I've done, I've become very, very bored with all of it. I enjoy life, and company of wise, interesting people, I enjoy the love of a beautiful, perfect woman, but I cannot, and will not EVER enjoy dying, being destroyed, or seeking to strike back on those who struck me down. Vengeance is a boring thing to be. Lust is far more fruitful. I'm not speaking simply of luxuria, the act of carnal lust, but the all-encompassing desire to risk all to have what you wish. Do you know what I lust for? Peace."

"Thank you for clarifying." He believed at least part of it. It wasn't out of the realm of possibility that this being would grow tired of dying, though he wasn't sure about Asmodeus ever growing tired of revenge. And who was the woman Asmodeus spoke of?

At length, Ariel shook his head. "I may be prideful when I say this, but I think I have a unique perspective - not better or worse, merely unique. I've surrendered to lust of all types. Indeed, some might say I lust for knowledge and always have. I would like to think we might be able to understand each other, but just because we might be able to understand each other does not mean I would be more lenient in the future."

"The trouble with the religion built upon the deifying of the young God and his angels is that they have good intentions in saying something is a sin, even in the smallest amount, Ariel, but they blow it out of proportion. It isn't pride that is the sin, it's an excess of it. You should know that, being what you are," Asmodeus shook his head and chuckled, before taking another sip of his ale. "You should be proud to have the perspective you do. You are singular in your talents, in your abilities, in your perspectives, and most of all, in the gifts that have been given to you. However, do not presume to feel that you understand lust," and although the words would have been bitter and cold from the lips of the more familiar, bitter creature in Ariel's life, the tone was passive and still pleasant, almost tune-like in its cadence and tone, "simply because you've experienced it. Your sin is vainglory, young angel. And it looks good on you, but don't let it go to your head, hm?"

(Reply to this)

[info]defectedfromgod
2011-01-19 03:21 am UTC (link)
"I did not say I understood lust. I said I might be able to understand you." The two were not the same, at least not to Ariel. "And if it's vainglory to know that I'm unique, then pronounce me guilty. I don't believe I deserve half of the goodness I've received, but nor have I necessarily deserved all of the pain I've suffered." Being in the presence of this creature worried him, though not enough to panic over. He'd expected a fight, not a civil discussion. He didn't believe himself overtly proud. "Sins are sins, though I do believe that sometimes no notice is given to the gravity and scope of the act committed."

"Only when the eyes are upon you does it truly matter, and it seems, Ariel, that no matter how many sins you've committed, they're forgiven for putting up with that blowhard of a beast Mephisto," he chuckled, giving a quick smile to the waitress as she brought out the food, including some fried pastry of some sort to split between them, and more ale. He set into the food with immaculate manners, smiling to himself. "If only we were all so lucky. You should be boastful, in my opinion. After all, you are correct. Your experiences are terribly unique."

"I would not wish my life on anyone." Ariel was quick to make clear in between bites of dim sum. "That uniqueness is helpful to me, but it has been very hard won. Nowadays I prefer to have my own peace." He did his best not to think of Iku; if Asmodeus had picked his brain before, there was no guarantee he wouldn't do so again.

It wasn't hard to find what was important to Ariel, but he wouldn't use the information to his advantage, unless it was absolutely necessary. He smiled faintly, however, at the fact that Ikuko Kada was the daughter of a good friend of his, and the half-sister of his most beloved. "We all deserve our peace with our loves. It seems that you and I are both blessed by a mutual friends' daughters. I'm sorry. I used to be able to not listen in, but it seems that with this incarnation, I have lost the filter. It might still be with Raziel, or perhaps with you, now that he's bestowed all the powers he had to you."

He dropped his chopsticks and cursed himself for the loss of equanimity, but there was really no way not to respond, he figured. Ariel sighed. "I wish you could turn that off." Iku was Nephilim, and had a thousand allies, of course, but he still worried. He tried to answer the other unspoken question. "What exactly do you mean? I cannot pick up thoughts spontaneously, at least not yet."

"Perhaps nor could he, but regardless, I once could, and can't now. Have you met Sadako?" He chuckled and looked over the rest of his meal, picking a piece of meat off the mostly-bones carcass of his duck, "oh, of course you have, silly of me to ask. She's a dear, isn't she? I want you to know that since you are friends of hers and Uzza's, I will do you no harm. Or Ikuko, for that matter. In fact, the only one I still want to strangle by no uncertain terms is Raziel himself, but that will pass in time, provided he doesn't try to fuck with me again."

"I have met Miss Yamamura, briefly." Ariel sighed. "Ikuko didn't know who her family was until recently, but I knew her before. And to be honest, I don't believe that Raziel will do anything to anyone." He was too taken up with Inanna, to say nothing of lacking fundamental powers, but for Asmodeus's benefit, he thought fiercely, Try to touch him when he's no match for you and I will be happy to add to that death tally.

"Has anyone told you how alike the two of you are?" Asked Asmodey, who smiled, entirely amused. "I appreciate that kind of strong bond, Ariel, I truly do, but you cannot go up against me and live, nor should you try. He may be powerless and blind, but he knows how to destroy me, and unless you picked up his memories as well, you don't, and I suggest you drop it."

As friendly as he said it, it wasn't without a shiver of a second, cold tone threaded through it. That second voice was terrible, cold as Cocytus, and the most hateful, spiteful, bloody-minded voice Ariel had ever likely heard. Where Mephisto ran hot, Asmodeus ran burning cold.

"I did pick up most of his memories." His own tone was soft and even, not challenging, but not subservient, either. The voice did frighten him, but he'd learned through what felt like decades of dealing with Mephisto. The voice was a warning, not a declaration of war.

"Even still, Ariel. I wouldn't want to harm you." And it was the truth. He had no beef with Ariel. "I'll tell you what. I'll stop sending the army of morons at you in exchange for a fighting chance to kill that bastard once he's back up to a hundred percent. Or you can fight me and lose." He said it with all the confidence that he would win in a battle with the young angel. There were few angels he couldn't take down a peg. Michael and Raphael, for example, while Gabriel was a fair fight, and if it weren't for the fact that Mephisto played fucking DIRTY, he would have been able to beat Raziel, too.

"Up to you, young one."

"What's your definition of a fighting chance?" Ariel shot back. "Your allies on your side, his allies on his side? I don't know how much clearer I can be, sir. I will not allow you to kill him." Raziel had formidable allies, but if it was one on one, well. He worried. And a world without the angel ... well, he wasn't too proud to admit, at least to himself, that the idea frightened him.

"He and I alone, Ariel. You know as well as I that the being you protect is very good with a whip, and can hold his own in battle. I wouldn't want anyone else harmed. And if you must stand between he and I, Ariel, I'm afraid I do have to deal with you first." He broke off a part of the pastry set out for them and took a small bite.

"You can baldly and boldly sit before me and say you'll protect him from me, but as he is so fond of pointing out, knowledge isn't experience. Give him time to recover his powers, his abilities, and I guarantee you that our egotistical young god friend won't want you to stand between he and I.

"With respect, I'll hear that from him, and not you." Ariel felt less hungry at this point. He didn't bother appealing to the demon's compassion; appealing to his sister's happiness wouldn't lead anywhere. "At least you're not attacking a man when he's down?" He jibed, a trifle sarcastically.

"Hell, if anyone told me anything when I returned from death, I wouldn't have sent my legions yet. My sister, a greenhorn, and a blind, powerless being. It's like kicking a three-legged puppy. A cute three-legged puppy."

Asmodeus looked up at Ariel. "May I ask you a fair question? How on earth did the creature that killed you and sent that redheaded harpy to destroy you again your way wind up gaining your implicit trust? It seems a little crazy."

"He wasn't always. It was his own kind that made him that way. Angels and himself, mostly," Asmodey sighed, shaking his head. "He was an advocate to share the world with the rest of us. And they drove him away for it, and made devils of us," the redhead broke off another piece of pastry, popping it into his mouth, "but I'm just a little biased. Listen. Back to the uh, thing," he rolled his hand, clearing his throat as he sat up.

"Consider it a gentleman's duel. I won't disrupt a hair on Raziel's head, until he's back to himself, and hell only knows how long that will take. But once he is, I'm going to have to fight him. Not you, not Gabey baby, not any of his other brothers. Raziel alone, since it was that being alone who tried to wipe me off the face of reality. If he doesn't use cheaty, underhanded tactics like he did before," Asmodey said with a smile, "it should be a pretty fair fight."

"I suppose I can't make that decision for him." It bloody well bothered him that he couldn't, but it wouldn't be at all fair. He didn't like this being or trust him. He didn't like the snidey tone, the rude reference to Archangel Gabriel, or the cavalier assumption that he'd triumph over Raziel. But he'd catch hell, proverbially speaking, for protecting Raziel too much.

"Not unless they asked me to, or had inflicted it on me first," he shook his head, sipping his ale and leaning back. "I don't think he knows how much pain he drew from me, the last time we saw each other." He let Ariel see, in living detail, the memory of his three days of torture before being skinned and beheaded in Mephisto's subterranean chamber, sparing Ariel the physical sensations that went along with it, though it had a full day of nothing but Calliope working her deadly, sadistic magic with a scalpel over his skin and over various parts as he regenerated quickly.

"Does he even know that kind of physical pain?"

Well, that was unpleasant. Ariel grimaced, especially at the appearance of that redheaded harpy. "He is no longer Mephisto, and honestly, I think he does." Hopefully he was doing the right thing. "If he does not, he's at least more familiar with the sort of pain that humans experience." That, at least, was something Asmodeus would hear, if he hadn't already.

With a carefully arched brow, Asmodey considered what Ariel said, "How is he suddenly familiar with the experience of human pain?" He asked the question out loud, more to himself than to Ariel before shaking his head. "No matter. Ariel, Raziel is Mephistopheles, and contrariwise as well. He needs to find a center, an equilibrium in his personality and existence. Come to terms with who and what he is. He isn't what he was made to be, nor is he what he became in his darkest of times," Asmodey said, before pointing to Ariel. "You could learn a lot more from his fall than to simply not do it."

"I see we're going to disagree on method," Ariel replied, shaking his head. "I'm afraid I should take my leave, sir. I've likely taken enough of your time, and I have work to do." He was tired of the fencing and by now, thoroughly on edge.

"It's been a pleasure, Ariel," Asmodeus passively said, "and you have my word that no demon of mine will darken your doorstep over this matter any longer." He offered up money for their meal, and looked over at Ariel. "I do hope you can find your way back on your own." That said, he simply disappeared.

And returned to NYC, to get back to business as usual.
