WHO: Catherine and Calliope
WHAT: Having a snack
WHERE: Places and other places
WARNINGS: Vampire violence

Catherine waited around a certain street corner in New York, where she and Calliope were wont to go hunting. She hoped the other woman remembered. It felt so odd, to just ... appear here. In the middle of things. And Calliope had a boyfriend, and it was strange. She was happy for her friend, but felt vastly out of place.

Calliope soon rounded a corner, beaming when she saw her friend. She was in a short secretary skirt with one of Azrael's button-down shirts on top. walking quickly over to her, Calliope grinned broadly, face lighting up. "Hello, Mistress."

Catherine smiled genuinely, allowing herself to lay a hand on the other woman's shoulder. "Calliope, it is so very good to see you." She looked happy, healthy and frankly more content than she'd ever seen her. It was ... well, nearly alarming.

Moving forward, Calliope wrapped her arms around Catherine. "It's good to see you too. I've missed you." Taking her arm into hers, she started to walk with her. "What sort of food did you have in mind, Mistress?"

Catherine froze, but merely kept calm. "I just need food. Something that might give me a bit of a challenge ..." She looked her friend over, up and down. "You look delightfully happy, my dear."

"Oh, I am. But it hasn't changed me, Mistress. If anything, it's augmented me." Happiness highlighted her cruelty. She saw people and compared them all to her lover, her kind, adoring, accepting Azrael, and she hated humanity all the more for being nothing like him.

"It could change you if you wanted it to," Catherine shook her head. "But if it hasn't, so be it." She squeezed Calliope's hand. "Where I was, you'd gone. You'd disappeared six months past. I'm so glad to have ... really, any variation of you ... back." Perhaps an extravagant display of emotion for her, but heartfelt nonetheless.

"I change with him. That, I want. No more, no less." She smiled at the squeeze, swinging her boss' hand girlishly.

Catherine smiled then. "I'm indeed happy to hear that. Are you hungry, or is it just me?" To business. Killing something would be nice.

"That works quite nicely." Catherine smiled, trying to breathe and slip into hunting mode. "Tourists are out tonight."

Calliope seldom slipped out of hunting mode. She scanned for tourists, picking out people whose eyes lingered a bit too long on street signs, who were taking snaps of buildings almost haphazardly.

Bless Calliope. The faithful, the ever-vigilant. "Over there?" She murmured, nodding toward a man, hands in his pockets. She loved taking down the men who thought they were hot shit.

She nodded. "He's not sure where he is, otherwise he wouldn't be walking with so much purpose. Besides, it's not like you won't be able to charm out where he's from. Your legs have a way of inciting chatter, Mistress." She smirked and nodded, motioning her forward.

Catherine laughed, but it made sense, really. She headed over to the man, accent in full flower, charming him with little trouble. She pointed to Calliope, insinuating the possibility of something with the two of them. Stupid man.

Calliope twisted some of her hair around a finger in an attempt to look innocent. She was far better at it after having been with Azrael, and she knew a bit more about how to react with the promise of sex. Not a lot more - she was already excellent at studying human behavior and mimicking it - but still, it helped.

The man agreed, of course, coming over toward Calliope. Catherine tried to time it right, and once she had an angle, swung her clasped fists together at the back of his head. He slumped, winding up on his knees in front of Calliope. "No fight in him." She rolled her eyes. But at least it was dinner.

"Aww, I was going to hurt him!" Calliope pouted, but smiled. "It's true. You eat first, Mistress, you're hungrier than I am." She smiled brightly, all but skipping toward an alley where they could drink.

Catherine half dragged him behind her, cursing under her breath, finally dropping him and taking a breath before beginning to eat. It felt good, and she could feel strength returning. "You can still hurt him; I daresay he's only unconscious."

This was the amusing part, at least until it got pitiful. Catherine simply folded her arms, leaned against the wall, and watched. The man did wake, beginning to howl in agony, but she swiftly got hold of his throat. "You can neither scream nor run, my dear." Her tone was indulgent, even motherly.

Catherine watched impassively, unmoved by Calliope's glee. She knew her friend by now. "Blood loss ought to do it by now," she commented, sounding a trifle bored.

Nodding, she stood up. "Mmm, I'm sure." She pulled a handkerchief out of her purse, dabbing at her mouth and chin. She offered it to her boss, humming and smiling as the color continued into her cheeks.

"It makes sense." Catherine closed her eyes, weary. "Have you been here long, Calliope? I know I was here before, but don't recall it." She still felt completely out of place. It bothered her immensely.

"This time around, just a week or so. I was here before as well. I hope I stay this time, that the stupid wind makes up its damn mind." She grinned and took Catherine's hand again. "I'll take you back to your flat."

"I hope you stay, as well." She smiled, trying to look normal. She didn't want pity, especially not from the one person who might actually give it to her. "How do you know you were here so recently? I have no memory of being in this world. I know no one except you."

"I was back home for about three weeks. I counted the days. Then I came back here. Maybe it's longer for people here, maybe it's longer for people there, but that's irrelevant. To me, it's only been a few weeks." She shrugged. "I've kept the business running in your absence."

"I'm glad." Catherine smiled. She laid a hand on Calliope's shoulder, hoping the other woman would excuse the gesture. "I've very much missed you. All this travelling in time is strange to me, and it's ... foreign."

She caught Calliope's gaze and held it for a minute, a fairly definitive do not take that tone with me. Her voice, however, was mild. "Perhaps I'll think more clearly after I get a bit of sleep."

Calliope met and held her employer's eyes, her own face an unreadable mask. She said nothing, nodding to Catherine's idea of rest. "Perhaps."

She loved Catherine as a sister, as a best friend, as a teacher. It spoke volumes that she'd only sounded a tiny bit out of sorts; most other people would have already felt surgical steel sink into a vital organ.

Catherine sighed. "Rest for me, I think. I know nothing of angels or anything of the sort, and shouldn't have spoken of it." It was as close as she'd come to an apology when she was trying to look out for Calliope, but she had spoken out of turn. "Will you pardon me, my dear?"

"I don't mind at all." It might be better to be alone right now. "I'll be in right on time, though. I'll see you then." She felt tired and lost. She'd be better in the morning. "Pass a good night, my dear girl." How was it that Calliope was twice her age and she was the one feeling like an ancient elder?
