Who: Tobias and Belle
What: coffee and insanity. Possible catharsis
Where: Chicago
When: Right now!
Warnings: dude, it's a guy from Oz and a girl who's been an assassin all her life and just got raped. Figure out what kind of warnings go here.

There was no problem with finding the place. She had been to Chicago a couple times, and being a telepaht meant never having to stop and ask directions, anyway.

So it only took twenty minutes for her to arrive, even after factoring in telling Gilbert goodbye and debating whether or not the revolver was overkill.

She had claimed a table close to the door, and was reading a magazine article about water-based gardens.

Tobias wandered through the door a few minutes after her, running a hand through his still-damp hair; he'd been late to his meeting with his parole officer, for want of better hygiene, so she'd let him go do that- but at least Bella would get the benefit of him not smelling like wet dog and sweat. He was put together as he'd been, since leaving Oz, jeans and a nicer shirt, even a jacket, given how freezing it was in Chicago lately.

Stepping into the coffee shop, he ordered himself a drink, not paying much attention to the contents- it was caffiene, and not the motor oil he'd gotten in prison. Once he had his drink in hand, he turned to find a table, spotting Bella with a half-smile, heading over to the table.

"Apparently I'm late. Sorry, forgot I had some things to take care of. Mind if I-?" The question was more habit than anything, before he realized she had in fact asked him there, giving him the right to sit across from her. Pardon him, social conventions were still being stretched, like an atrophied muscle.

She set her magazine down and smiled. "Go ahead, cher. And no problem about bein' late. I'm habitually early."

She extended a hand. "Nice t' meecha."

He took her hand in his, shaking firm, "You too. Read anything interesting?" He motioned down at the magazine- it might be lame, but it's all he had by way of small-talk, until he got to learn something more about her, than her name.

"Oui. I've got room t' garden for the first time since I got here, so I was thinkin' about turnin' the swimming pool into a planter."

She smiled softly. "How long you been here?"

Nodding politely, he took a sip of his coffee, sighing contently with a relaxed lean back in his chair. "About a week or so. I don't know, it all sort of.." He gave a hand motion; he'd been either high, beaten, or fucking for most of it. Time wasn't so easy to keep anymore, now that he was off the Em City schedule.

"Right. I'd say it gets better, but I have a thing about lying t' people. This place sucks just as much as home."

She shrugs. "At least back home y' were allowed t' smoke in a coffee shop if you were seated on the right side."

"There's not much this place could do to get better, from where I'm sitting. Considering what I was looking forward to back... 'home'," He hated thinking of Oz as home, but he wasn't socially dense enough to state outright he'd been in prison, "This is actually pretty great." A beat, "If you want a smoke, we can head outside."

"Nah, I can tough it out. Been kind of a weird night. I'll have a smoke after a while."

She tilted her head. "Where y' from, then?"

Huh. Funny, he hadn't quite hashed out how he wanted to answer that, yet. "I was a lawyer, Boston suburbs." Hardly the whole story, probably evident by the slight hesitation in answering, but she'd said no questions, so he hadn't been expecting it.

"And you?"

She's said, in point of fact, that they would be avoiding them. Not that they'd be asked. Beside, it would be hard to get to know each other otherwise. "Assassin, bayous of New Orleans."

She shrugs. "Now I'm a pin-up model," and unwitting porn star.

"No shit," He smiled a little at that, surprisingly more at ease than one should probably have been, given the first occupation. The second held his interest far more easily.

"Pin-up model. Quite some career shift. Just get sick of killing?" His tone is easy, conversational. Living with murderers- hell, sleeping with one- made the entire concept a lot easier to grasp. Sometimes, certain people just had to die. No reason to hold that against her.

"Meh. Not really? But I figured I'd stay on the right side of the law for at least a couple months. Beside, I could always start killing people again later, if I wanted to."

She shrugged. "Neither's as glamorous as they sound, sadly."

He nodded. "I can understand that. At least you were smart enough not to get caught, I'm guessing. So you've got that going for you," He took another drink, watching passers-by through the nearby window.

"I was raised to it. Hard t' fuck up when you've been trainin' since you started walkin'. Of course, lawyer's a pretty nice job, too."

Tobias just shrugged at that. In truth, he missed the law more than almost anything; even if it was different now, knowing what he was sentencing people to. Another sip of coffee- god, he'd forgotten how good non-government-issued caffiene could be- and he was left glancing around the coffee shop again. "So, if I can- why Chicago?"

"That's alright. I don't mind, really." She shrugged. "Your boyfriend from the world you came from?"

Hearing someone refer to Chris as his boyfriend in a non-mocking way got a small face, but he hid it in another drink as he nodded, "Oz. Oswald State Pen," Hey, she was honest, he might as well extend the courtesy back.

"Oh. That sucks. But at least somethin' good came out of it, unless you're only with him outta habit or somethin'."

She was a little flaily, but managed to hide it well. He hadn't freaked out on her, after all.

"I'd say it's a lot closer to 'or something'. But it's alright. He's.." Toby sighed. "Trust me, don't get me started. How about that boyfriend of yours- he come with you, or what?"

She got a smile for that, nodding again. "I hear you. It's sad, I almost feel more like a babysitter sometimes, than a..." Handmotion, still not liking the fit of the word 'boyfriend' in reference to Chris, "With him. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not the most... well-adjusted guy you can find, but.. it's almost like I'm doing a public service, or something." Which, considering the extreme actions Chris had taken on himself and others the last time he and Toby parted ways, maybe he was.

"I kinda know what y' mean. Though mostly the public service is keepin' myself occupied so I don't go nuts and kill half the population of Georgia."

She probably could, too.

He seemed to watch her for a second, before scoffing and shaking his head a little. "Well, on behalf of that half of Georgia, and myself considering the proximity, be sure to thank him for me."
