WHO: Ariel and Calliope
WHAT: Breakage.
WHERE: Calliope's rooms.
WARNINGS: Um. Possible violence, and a decent amount of profanity. And Ariel's an angstmuffin, at least for now, but if you've read anything with him in it, you know that.

It had been a decent amount of time since Ariel had returned to Calliope's flat from his sojourn, and all of it, aside from eating and washing time, had been spent with the Key. He'd worked until his eyes had given out, falling asleep splayed in the middle of a thousand traps, drawn again and again on all the paper he had at hand. His sleep was blank, or something protected him from the dreams that were likely all of Helena in her tiny enclave of hell.

Dante's Inferno speaks of suicides as trees, denied human bodies in hell for their act of self-destruction on Earth. Minos the Judge flings their souls into the Suicide Wood, and they take root where they land. Their leaves are forever picked at and eaten by harpies, and when they bleed, they may speak, but only then.

The devil's trap was not yet complete; Singer and Lebeau had disowned him. His own intellect was exhausted and in a state of constant fury, but he was doing the best he could. He stayed indoors; if he looked at a single gnarled tree, he would cry and never stop.

It was night now, and the rooms were so high up, there would be no branches casting shadows. He shuffled from his room, looking for something to eat.

Calliope woke up and yawned, stretching and wandering outside of her room. Her hair was mussed, and she smiled when she saw Ariel. "Good morning," she murmured.

He'd nearly forgotten she was there. "Hello," Ariel turned his head, cracking his neck audibly and wincing. "Did I wake you? I hope not, I've been doing my best to be quiet as a church mouse."

"You've been quiet, it's okay." She smiled and squeezed his hand. "How are you, anyway? You look pale."

"I may have a way out." He let her touch his hand but made no move to reciprocate. Still, he looked her in the eyes, seeing her calm. "A way to at least get that devil to tell me what needs to be done." Marguerite would surely understand? "I know I've told you about Him."

"Who, the Devil?" She shook her head. "Satan? Or your personal one?" She moved to the kitchen to make something for him. "Do you like eggs?"

He looked confused, eyebrows furrowing, but belatedly replied. "Yes, I do." It occurred to him that he would likely have to de-sensitize the room he'd occupied before Calliope could enter it again, and he smiled, amused.

"What?" She cocked her head at his smile, moving to put oil down in a pan and start some scrambled eggs. "What's so funny?"

"I've likely fouled that room." It wasn't per se the thought of her disintegrating that made him laugh; it was some undefinable instinct, like a child laughing when the teacher sits on a tack. "I promise you, I will lay purification sigils when I vacate it, so you don't become embroiled in a lesser trap." He shook his head, feeling oddly affectionate. "What a poor repayment of my tab."

"You don't have a tab, and so long as you don't mean excrement, I'm fine." She smiled at him, ruffling his hair. "How is your work progressing? I worry about you."

He began to protest, but reflected that the qualification was warranted, given some of the rituals of the ancients. "Bad magic," Ariel clarified, shaking his head. "Some sigils won't harm a true demon, which render them useless for my purposes, but they will hold lesser beings which are not angelic. And I'm exhausted, but Helena cannot rest, so neither can I."

She also was exhausted, from tolerating him. "And you consider me demonic." She narrowed her eyes at him, balling a hand into a fist. "Well."

Ariel sighed. "I never said that, but you are not an angel and you cannot tell me I am mistaken." By heaven, he was tired. His voice was quieter, cajoling, almost. "I'm truly sorry to give offense; it was not my intention, Marguerite."

Sighing, she ran her fingers through her hair. "No, no, you're right. It's all right. I'm sorry for snapping at you. What is it you're working on, anyhow?"

"A devil's trap." His voice was still quiet. "An ancient Sumerian devil's trap fit to hold a prince of hell." And if it hurt the demon at all, Ariel would not object. His voice regained some fire as he went on. "He must free her. I simply have to sweeten the deal enough for him to wish it."

His presumption made her roll her eyes. "You were a washed up alchemist then, what makes you think you can do it now?" She was glad she'd murmured it under her breath. "May I watch?" Her shift in tone was expert, and she stood a bit further from him, more demurely.

He would not have noticed even if his head was in the right place. "Watch what?" He blinked owlishly, still fighting the urge to simply melt and become one with the furniture. So tired. "The mere process of going through the Key? If you wish, though I'm sure it'd bore you."

"I want to watch you trap a demon," she smiled dreamily. If there was a way to bet on such things, she'd have beet a million to one that he couldn't do it. But it wouldn't hurt to watch, she could intercept things if she had to. In the rare event he did something right for the first time in his life.

"I won't be able to yet. Soon, but not yet." He looked over at her, eyes going softer. "Ever since Helena's kidnapping you have been the one to believe in me, my dear. I cannot thank you enough for that belief and trust." Something twanged in his mind that somehow this wasn't right, but he ignored it. "A lesser woman might have taken justifiable revenge."

"Why would I take revenge?" She smiled and stroked his cheek. "You're the only true, just man left. Even if you can't love me, at least you still love. It's good to see." She moved to grab a plate, transferring his eggs to it and lightly sprinkling them with pepper.

"No matter how many mea culpas I give you, it will not be enough." Ariel lowered his head, unfamiliar with the seal of the confessional. "I wish you had never known of demons; I wish you had never met me at times. It would have been better." Marguerite ... he had to find a way to help her. Somehow. "My life was not the only one Mephisto ruined."

"Please, don't say his name, you may draw him closer." It was a good enough excuse, but truly, she just didn't want to hear her beloved's name on his lips. She sighed, pushing the food closer. "Eat. You need your strength for your battle."

Ariel obediently set to, lapsing into silence, though his mind never stopped working. He could not have articulated his train of thought, however; the images seemed to slap him in the face, coming out of nowhere or from the deepest reaches of his psyche.

She set to cleaning out the pan, humming a little to herself as she scrubbed. She hoped she hadn't ruined the façade.

He could have told her she hadn't, if she'd asked. Everyone grew frustrated from time to time, or got tired, or took offense. Even this woman. he wondered if this had not been God's way of throwing him a lifeline, upon landing here.

He wished he could love her. But it would be the worst sort of betrayal.

As he looked down, his fork struck naked plate and he looked surprised; the food had seemed to disappear without his knowledge.

"Physically." His hand caught hers of its own volition as she drew nearer. "I wronged you earlier, I think ... I think you are an angel, if measured by deeds."
