Who: Alma and Open.
Where: The Diner she works in, Park City Utah.
When: Last night. Any time after, say 9 P.M.
Warnings: None.

She'd been there a couple of hours. There wasn't a whole lot to what would now be her second job. She got people coffee mostly, refilled coffee and brought and took away the occasional plate. It was dull, slow and dull all over again but it was feeding her and Drew and keeping them in the apartment. So she wasn't going to complain. She took it with stride. Sighing as she saw someone sit out of the corner of her eye she finished totaling a bill and set it in front of it's client, walked over without looking up, dating a new bill.

"Hi, can I getcha somethin'?"

A cold feeling settled in the pit of Alma's stomach and she swallowed hard, looking up to see the bruised knuckles. She almost felt like crying right then, no wonder Bobby had been sore with her. "Oh God, Pa." She shook her head, covering her mouth briefly before moving her hand. "What'd you do t'him? Y'cant go beatin' on people 'cause of the way their heart works."

Ennis shook his head. "Ain't like 'at, Junior." He looked away, his jaw tense. The nerve in his cheek pulsed visibly. He kept his eyes averted, he didn't want to talk about the talk he'd had with Bobby, and how he'd tried to resist his impulse toward violence for Junior's sake. And how Bobby had said just the wrong thing and he'd hit Bobby before he'd realised what he'd done, before he could stop himself, after he'd promised both Junior and Jack that he wouldn't hit Bobby at all.

Alma watched him, knowing well enough he didn't want to talk, and that he wouldn't lie to her. He'd tried. She almost felt ashamed to have assumed the worst, so she bit her lip, then stood up and walked around the table to kneel and wrap her arouns around him in a reassuring hug.

Ennis sighed a deep sigh. He wanted to tell her he was sorry, but admitting that would be opening a line of conversation he didn't want to engage in. So he said nothing, and merely lifted his hand up to embrace her and hold her to him for a moment.

Alma was still a moment, she didn't expect any sort of apology. She'd been taught very young to never second guess Ennis, even after the divorce, it had been something her mother had been very adament about. After the moment seemed to fade she moved up away from him, wetting her lips as she sat again, ignoring that topic despite how badly it nagged her. "How's Jack?"

"Jack's..." Ennis tilted his head. "Nothin' much changes, with Jack."

Alma laughed softly at that. "Reckon I ought t'have known that." She sighed a little, checking around to see the place was pretty much empty aside from them. That was good. She wound her hands in her lap, chewing her lip. "Don't reckon I wanna be bringin; Mark by, if'n you've been inna swingin; mood." It was ligt, meant as a joke.

Ennis shook his head. He sipped his coffee and sighed. "I ain't gonna take no sucker shots at 'im, Junior. Only if'n he makes me."

"Nah, he's lots different from Bobby." And that? Was an understatement. "He's real nervous t'meetchu." She sighed. "B'honest w'me, were y'ever in love with Mama?"

Ennis rubbed his hand over his face. "Th'honest truth? I still love yer mama, Junior. Ain't no typical kinda love. But I always loved her."

Alma nodded, looking down at her nervous hands yet again. "Don't seem like we Del Mar's can have any kind of typical love."

"I reckon not." Ennis sipped his coffee. "Reckon that's'a legacy y'ma and I left for you. Wonder if Jenny's faired any better?" It ws the first Ennis had mentioned his second daughter.

Alma sighed deeply, settling her head into her hands, watching thoughtfully out the window. "Jenny? Sh'wasn't concerned 'bout boys, Jenny got a real big scolarship, went t'college."

Alma glanced at him and back at the window, sighing. "Yeah, sure is." her voice did everything to betray her resentment toward her sister. She hadn't made it into college on account of the essay she had to write for her application, they'd said her grammar wasn't up to par, so she'd worked hard into her marriage to Kurt, and could speak and write like any person who use 'proper' grammar could.

"Been thinkin' 'bout gin' m'self."

"Goin'...back t'school? T'college?" Ennin leaned back in his seat as if the idea shocked him. "I think that's a mighty good idea, Junior."

Alma just shrugged. "Aint likely I will. Got th'baby t'be takin' care of when I aint workin', maybe when he's older, and we got a good standin' inna place. Or if'n down th'road th'finances get split somehow." It wasn't an allusion to any plan to get married, but she wasn't opposed to it.

She shook her head. "Bobby aint a bad daddy, Pa. Bobby's good w'th'is boy. If there's somethin' he's good at, 's bein' a daddy." She sighed deeply. "Can't just dump him off w'th'you, sides, I'd still have t'find a way t'pay f'school."
