Who: Sophie Frost and Jon Kent (with Gar Logan)
Where: The Homecoming Dance
Warnings: Nah.

Sophie was not at all sure she wanted to be here tonight. She would prefer to be at home watching stupid movies with Gar and Starfire, but she felt like it was her responsibility, somehow. With her mother gone, she should be the Frost presence. More than that, she felt the need to prove to her classmates that she wasn't broken. She knew that there were whispered rumors, and she was beginning to feel tired of being the freak.

She wore a white dress, of course, appropriate enough for the dance, but only just. She'd asked Gar to come along. He would make the whole thing tolerable, and she wouldn't look like a complete loser who couldn't find a date. She was normal flesh-and-bone Sophie for now, but as they entered the crowded gymnasium with it's unique blend of perfume, cologne and body spray, the idea of diamondizing the insides of her nostrils was pretty tempting.

"This place reeks," said Gar, whose sense of smell was pretty sensitive and whose lack of tact was nigh legendary. "Is this what high school is like? I'm glad I wasn't in it for very long." He was dressed in his finest suit, and because the dance was in England, he'd elected to wear a cravat. It was shiny.

"I mean, these guys are supposed to be English. I didn't know you had Axe body spray in England. The Queen wouldn't approve of you guys smelling like douchebag, you know," he added to a random passerby. Gar got a few raised eyebrows, but nothing more. It was a strange mix. Gar was a college boy, or was until recently, which meant that he was cool. On the other hand, he was Gar Logan. The recent tension between mutants and Muggles wasn't really helping matters any.

"You know what we need? Punch. You want some punch? I'm going to get some punch."

Sophie shrugged a bit, her nose wrinkling. "This is worse than normal. I guess they're trying to impress each other." She tensed some when they entered the dance, going into professional, walled-off Frost mode--straight back, sort of disdainy. She smirked slightly at Gar's remarks to her classmates.

She nodded. "Punch would be good." Did you bring anything to add to it? she thought at him. Sophie wasn't really a drinker, and she wasn't sure alcohol could make this party better, but she was pretty sure it couldn't make it worse.

"Yeah, right, you're like, three. You're lucky you get juice." Gar didn't have much of a taste for strong alcohol anyway, and spiking the punch bowl was only funny when you were young enough not to pass for one of the teachers. If he did it, it was probably a felony. Or whatever the English equivalent of a felony was.

Gar wasn't really used to psychic intrusion, so he continued to speak out loud to Sophie while he was walking away from her. This drew a look or two, but considering Gar was green with pointed ears and walked with a faintly feline gait, talking to himself was one of the most normal things about him. "By the way, Sophie, if there are any of those Mean Girls cliques around here that you don't get along with, be sure to tell me. It'll make for awesome fun times." He returned to Sophie with her glass. "Hi, I'm back."

"Some of us reach maturity faster than others." Then she undermined her point a bit by sticking her tongue out at Gar. She crossed her arms over her chest, glancing around. She was tuning out most of the gibberish people were thinking.

She raised a brow. Do I even want to know? She took the glass when he returned. "It's not like they're throwing pig's blood on me. I probably wouldn't even know if I wasn't a telepath." That was only partially true. There were still plenty of the signs that normal outcasts picked up on.

"As I suggested, my time in high school was very brief, and I was a Teen Titan at the time, so it was hardly normal. It's hard to care about high school politics when your after-school activities are like... chasing down cult leaders in Europe and shit. Everything I know about high school I know from movies, and since this isn't an all-girl school, one genre of movies is straight out of the picture." Alas, poor lesbians. "So somewhere, there is a group of girls that are super popular despite the fact that no one likes them, and they are mean to you because you're awesome."

He gave this some thought, took a drink, then continued. "Also, there's a pretty girl somewhere who everyone thinks is ugly because she has a ponytail and glasses."

Sophie smiled, shrugging some. "Maybe it's just different because we're in England, but I haven't seen any of that. The cheerleaders are actually pretty nice. Some of the football players are jerks, but.." she shrugged. "I never really went out of my way to get to know many people." Back when she was the five-in-one, people avoided her because they were creeped out. They were a little friendlier to her later, but Sophie had preferred Rose's company, and sometimes that had kept people away. Now that she'd been playing Ice Queen at school, people were treating her accordingly. She couldn't pinpoint a certain group.

"Once again, real life has ruined my understanding of the world." Maybe it was the English thing. Or maybe it was the magic, mutants and Muggles all intermingling. He didn't know. Whatever it was, reality was a pain in the ass.

"So hey, here's a question. I didn't even know you guys had a home to come to. I thought homecoming was something about football, which England doesn't know about. So what's the deal?"

"Sorry." Sophie shrugged again. "I don't know. Maybe someone watched the same movies you did." She finished her punch, setting the glass on a table. "Just an excuse for a party, I think." She shook her head. The whole thing was silly, as far as she was concerned.

"Well, at least I'm not alone." Gar's view, especially in times of angst and sadness, was that any excuse for a party was a good one. And even if it did call on terrible, terrible movies to do it, he could make do. "Although it's a shame they didn't draw on more Hughes. I think we could all do with a little Breakfast Club."

As he was idly chattering, the song switched from generic pop to generic slow pop. Gar nodded sagely. "Yes, this is about right. Come on, let's go show these bastards how to dance in a terrible high school movie." He took Sophie by the hand and pulled her onto the dance floor.

Sophie had several large holes in her knowledge of pop culture. One of the side-effects of living with Gar was that he was trying to fill them in all at once. Sophie had learned that, if she ever wanted to leave the couch, it was better to avoid letting him know that she had no idea what he was talking about. Being a telepath helped with that.

Sophie laughed a little as Gar dragged her out onto the dance floor. The point of going to a dance was to dance, after all.

It was at around this time that, millions of miles away, a lone alien on a distant planet happened to glance at his watch and notice the time and date. "Shit!" he said. "I have a date!" And in an instant, he was gone.

Meanwhile, Gar was doing a fairly successful job of dancing. It was one of his few marketable skills. "Green" and "superhero" weren't really as impressive as it should have been anymore, but dancing was always pretty good to know. "I know what you're thinking, Sophie. You're thinking, could this guy be any better at dancing? The answer is no. No one, ever, has outstepped Gar Logan."

Sophie giggled, her arms wrapped around his shoulder, hands at the back of his neck. She was actually having fun. Take that, Mean Girls. "And I thought I was supposed to be the mind reader. Just take over my whole schtick and turn to diamond, why don't you?"

The DJs at high school dances seemed to think that if they played two slow songs in a row, that might give the kids long enough to get impregnated. As the DJ was getting ready to change to something a little more upbeat, Sophie gave him just a little mental shove in another direction, and he put on a Coldplay single.

There was a brief flash of Gar shifting into Sophie's body before returning to his own. "It's not copyright infringement if you tell me to do it, incidentally. Make a note of that." Someone was staring at him. "Don't look at me, it was her fault for asking."

Jon, meanwhile, was taking a shower by means of flying through the ocean at supersonic speeds. His clothes were a bit... extremely dirty as well, so he stopped by his house and changed in a matter of seconds. He arrived at Taunton just in time to see Sophie's sister's boyfriend turn into her, which was weird.

He walked over to the pair and tapped Sophie on the shoulder. "Sorry I'm late."

Sophie swatted lightly at Gar's shoulder, laughing. "Don't do that, it's weird." Gar had stolen Sophie's face before, but it was even stranger when she was dancing with him. She did tell him to, though.

She froze when Jon tapped her shoulder. It was hard to sneak up on a telepath. Supersonic speeds would generally do it, though. She unwrapped her arms from Gar and turned to Jon, giving him a small smile. "Welcome back to Earth."

Why did she feel a little like she'd been caught?

"Oh, hey, dude. This is actually great timing, because I was going to go get some burritos, and no one in fucking England can make a burrito, man, I don't know what it is. You guys are all on the curry or something, I don't know. That's right, I said it, English people, you make shitty burritos. So I'm going to head out, get some deliciousness, you dance with my date here, it'll be awesome." Gar turned into a bird and flew off, but not before pecking Sophie on the cheek.

Jon raised an eyebrow. "That was odd." He shook his head. "Listen, I know I've been out of..." He realized that they were standing in the middle of a dance floor and had garnered some attention. "Do you want to go somewhere a little more private?"

Jon might have superspeed, but Gar's mouth ran faster than the speed of light, apparently. Sophie rubbed at her cheek, a little surprised that didn't hurt more. She hadn't been pecked by a bird before. Licked by a lion and groomed by a gorilla, yes. "Little bit," she agreed with Jon. Gar certainly wasn't predictable.

It was frustrating. Seeing her dancing had convinced some of her fellow students that she was back to normal, and she wasn't about to crack like an eggshell at any moment. Now a small group of them were staring at her as though she were some kind of art exhibit and they wanted to see what would happen next. "Yeah, let's get out of here." The DJ started playing a rap song as she started for the exit.

Jon followed after, trying to ignore his instinct to rush. He rushed a lot. It was easy to do when your biggest strength was your speed. But he didn't feel comfortable picking up Sophie and carrying her. He didn't feel very comfortable doing much of anything right now. Mostly he felt sick, but that might have had something to do with going from the clean, if thin, air of Mars into the nigh-toxic atmosphere of Earth.

"Where's your sister? Did she and that green dude have a fight?"

Sophie was quite content walking, and was actively hoping Jon wouldn't scoop her up and fly her out of here. She really didn't need this made into more of a spectacle. Once they were outside, Sophie headed toward a nearby tree. It was quiet and away from the door where people were still arriving.

"She's gone. My whole family disappeared when yours did." The idea of transforming into diamond skin was so tempting right now, but she knew she couldn't. Gar's reaction had been bad enough, she didn't want a repeat. She knew she was safe with Jon, as uncomfortable as this was. She could play the ice queen at school, but Jon needed to know she felt it. "I've been staying with Gar."

Jon stopped in his tracks. It'd been easy to be selfish, so far away everything that might have reminded him of Mia and his mother. Mostly Mia. They'd never been apart for more than a couple of hours before, and then, quite suddenly, she was a universe away. It was like there'd been a noise that he'd heard so long that he hadn't realized it was there, and now that it was gone, the silence was deafening.

He couldn't imagine how Sophie felt, but knowing how he felt, the fact that he was absent seemed like a war crime. "I'm sorry," he said in a very quiet voice. "I didn't know."

"I know." Sophie shook her head a little. "You couldn't have known." Her throat felt tight. She'd actually let herself believe she was in an okay place. She'd been able to smile and laugh with Gar, but a lot of that had been distraction. Gar was probably feeling the same way, but she didn't really know what to do about it.

She glanced down at the ground. White dress and grass stains didn't exactly mix. Sophie ran a hand through her hair, not meeting Jon's eyes. "It's okay."

It wasn't okay. But he didn't know what else to say. He should have been there. Come to think of it, there were probably a lot of things that he should have been there for. He was the closest thing the world had to a Superman, and he'd been crying in space. And what actually disgusted him about the whole situation was that Sophie was the only thing he really regretted.

"Are you... no, of course you're not okay, forget I even..." Ugh. He should have just stayed on Mars. He was useless. "I'm sorry," he said again, for want of anything better.

Sophie shrugged one shoulder. "I guess it's all relative. I'm better than I was." She made it out of bed. She wasn't hiding in diamond. It still felt like there was a gaping wound in her chest, but there wasn't anything Jon could have done about that. She frowned. She didn't know what she expected to happen when Jon came back. Maybe she didn't think he would.

"Jon..." Her words caught in her throat. "I think we should just be friends. I'm not mad. I just.." She shook her head a little. "When we started dating, I thought we were moving on. But.." She bit her lip, not really sure how to phrase her concern. Sophie had shut herself off too, but Jon had gone to Mars. She felt almost like he'd cheated on her with a planet. It sounded absolutely absurd, but it hurt. She'd been so focused on the emotional pain of losing her family that she hadn't realized how much it hurt until now. Tears started rolling down her cheeks.

"I..." He didn't know why he felt the need to explain himself more. He'd left, that was enough, but he could see why his going to Mars might make her feel... well, betrayed. "We were moving on. I... I don't want you to think that I didn't... that we weren't... real." The truth, the cold, hard truth right now was that Jon wasn't in love with Sophie. He was... he had been in like, in that giddy, nervous period while a relationship was still starting to blossom. He liked her. And one day, he probably would have fallen in love with her.

But the world didn't work that way. "You were never meant to be a replacement for Rei. It was just... when Mia and Mom disappeared, my first thought was, 'This is just like when I lost Rei.' Except now, I didn't have anyone to fall back on, and... I shouldn't have run away, but I did. I'm sorry if I hurt you. But you're... you're right. I'm not moving on. And that's something I need to do before I try to be with anyone." Jon felt like a monster for it, but no small part of him was actually relieved. Relieved that he could be selfish and lonely for just a bit longer. "Sorry I ruined your dance."

Sophie was relieved he wasn't going to protest. She felt a bit lighter, like it was one less thing to worry about. It would be easier to get over Jon. She liked him, and she had wanted them to be a couple. She could've seen a really sweet little future for the two of them. But she wasn't in love with him. She was young, and this was only her second relationship. She wasn't sure if this was the right decision or not, but she didn't think things could get much worse, now. And Jon's words made her a little more confident she was moving in the right direction.

Just as she was reaching for something profound to say, there was a loud explosion behind them. Sophie spun around to see a hole blown in the corner of the building, smoke pouring out of it. "Oh, god," she said, transforming into diamond-form.

"Welcome home, Jon Kent," he said, mostly to himself. There was nothing like an explosion to get over a breakup. Ignoring the smoke, flames, and potential dangers, Jon and Sophie rushed into the chaos while everyone else rushed away from it.
